Although everybody seems to hate her on this board, I have to celebrate that for the first time in her career, she is getting good reviews for her new country album, after all her prior CD's, and even her 4-time platinum "In This Skin" got panned by the critics, she receives praises:
Billboard:
After she scored nine pop hits between 1999 and 2006, top 40 radio gave Jessica Simpson the heave-ho. Now the singer has shifted formats to country, which she insists is an organic fit, given her Texas roots —not to mention her film role as Daisy Duke in 2005's "The Dukes of Hazzard." Full-length foray "Do You Know" is a credible transition, beginning with No. 18 launch single "Come On Over," which convinced programmers that there's twang in Simpson's torch. She aligns with Grammy Award-winning producers Brett James—an ideal fit via collaborations with Martina McBride and Carrie Underwood—and John Shanks, who has worked with, well, everyone. Despite detractors, Simpson remains a gifted vocalist who delivers on most every cut. Soaring midtempo "Remember That," lamenting power ballad "Still Don't Stop Me" and the title track, which features Dolly Parton, are all prime contenders.
—Chuck Taylor (Billboard)
Rolling Stone:
Her decade-long career has been filled with film flops, failed romances and albums that vainly grasp for Christina's range and Britney's sex appeal (see "Irresistible," her homage to Spears' vinyl pants). But digging into her country roots for Do You Know is the most strong-footed move that Jessica Simpson — or her ever-present dad-ager, Joe — has ever made. While she begs for a booty call on the twangy single "Come on Over," she leaves the real seduction to her restrained delivery and the album's crisp melodies. (On the cover, she's posed with her arms and legs defensively folded over her crotch like police tape.) Chipper mandolins coax along the gentle "Pray Out Loud," and fingerpicked guitars make room for blasts of Hammond organ on "You're My Sunday" — an inspiring lift befitting its pause-to-reflect lyrics. "When I Loved You Like That" is a tasteful look at lost love that makes her roller jam "A Public Affair" seem like a humiliating old yearbook photo. And while a better country vocalist could have sung the hell out of the domestic-violence-themed "Remember That," Simpson's tender voice exudes the realism of a gal who's taken a few knocks in her day.

The real question is, will the country music industry embrace Jessica? Jessica fans may boost her sales, but country fans are fiercely protective of their own. I'm curious to see how this unfolds. I remember all too well the vicious comments made about Shania Twain when her music crossed over into pop.
That said, I think this album is Jessica's best work to date.

These must be the exceptions.
People gave it 2 stars, USA today 2 1/2, Entertainment Weekly C+
I've never been a fan because I think she pushes too hard and Disney darling Demi Lovato is following her unfortunate lead. Too breathy, too pushy.

"She's a piece of sh*t. I don't care if her producer's album with her name on it gets good reviews. GO AWAY, JESSICA!!!"
-I agree with you, it's her producer's album, but wait, isn't it the same case with Madonna, Britney, Christina, Barbra, Mariah, Celine, and pretty much everyone else in the recording industry, except for a few artists like Prince who do absolutely everything in their own records?
-She co-wrote an 85% of the songs(like she did in her previous 2 albums), so she actually sings her own material I'd say.
-You go away, if you don't like her, nobody forces YOU to buy her records. I enjoy her music and Im thrilled everytime she releases new CD's, you sound so full of hate, when I don't care for an artist, I don't buy or listen to their material, big f**king deal? Let it go.

I don't get why people hate her so much. She's a kind of music you don't like... oh well. She sings live--that's a reason to respect her.
I feel bad for her for her performance on the Today Show. She messed up at first, but she was fine after that. Perez said it was "disastrous," but it was not.

Because she's awful.
And when she sings she makes faces like a baby platypus who forgot to take Beano before eating a grande black bean chimichanga.
That's why.

i dont get how someone can say such horrible things about someone they don't know. i guess cause their "famous" you think it's justified. i'd hate to see what you say about people you do actually know. i sure hope you don't talk about them like that.

Speaking for myself, if people I do know are pieces of excrement, then, yes, I do talk to them like that.
What's awful about Jessica besides the fact that she is painful to watch sing? It's painful to listen to her sing. She's awful.
Miley Cyrus has more integrity. And I mean that sincerely.

I didn't know she performed in the back of cars. Thanks for that picture from her performance! -_-
Her voice is not horrible--she can sing better than so many other "singers" out there today. She may not be your favorite artist, but you cannot deny that she has talent.
Jessica CAN sing.

The sound was messed up--not her fault. She forgot the words at one point. NOT a train wreck. Train wreck is Britney at the 2007 VMAs. Train wreck is Amy Winehouse at any performance in the last 6 months (that she will show up to). Train wreck is not having technical difficulties that are out of your control and forgetting 5 words.
People just like to hate on Jessica because it seems to be the cool thing to do. I've even heard people say that Ashlee is better than her. Hopefully you don't agree with THAT statement.

Oh for gods sake, Parks. You've always been an apologist for these artificial pop poseurs. At this point, you are actually defending Jessica favorably in comparison to Britney, whom you have previously defended. You ARE the person who ran around foisting Britney cds on lots of people in your life, are you not? Because it was sooooooo amaaaazing? And you felt bad that people hated her?
It's nothing complicated. See Jessica gasp and grimace her way through a song and detest her. It has absolutely nothing to do with coolness factor. If I personally was worried about being cool would I have said I was shocked to love Miley's duet with her father on Oprah? Answer: no I would not. And Jessica Simpson blows. You're reminding me of the defenders of Ashley's mega-train-wreck on SNL. "She has acid reflux! The drummer pushed the button on the wrong lip-synch track; it wasn't her fault!"

Posted: 9/10/08 at 1:00pmI like Britney's music, but I don't think I ever actually defended her VMA performance from last year. Her CD was good (actually her best reviewed album she has released!) and I supported her for that reason.

Yes, split all the hairs you want. You show your "support" of this type of performer, you apologize for their demonstrated and repeated shortcomings and dismiss it when somebody points it out by saying they're just trying to be "cool". Yet, both you and muscle trumpet "the best reviews" a performer has ever received as if those and only those are valid.
That lack of consistency contributes to your lack of credibility.
Have at your delusion that Jessica Simpson is good and when this album flops like everything else she does and she tries releasing a Middle Eastern-infused Nu Metal album (which is actually a way more interesting possibility than anything her handlers will think up), we'll look forward to your enthusiastic posts about it.
