I have worked with Kathie Lee ( those cringeworthy Rockin' Tots Cafe Videos). Despite how she comes across on TV she is actually a very sweet woman. She gives credit where credit is due and is pretty straight forward.

Kathie Lee is a very nice woman in person-very kind to fans, very down to earth and warm. She'll chat up a stranger. Her drunky wonky persona is just that and it seems to get ratings, so why change it.

I've spent time with Kathie Lee in person, and agree - she's not as dippy as she plays on TV, and is very sweet.
BUT...
This is her job. She is a paid professional, who is responsible for an hour of TV a day each weekday. Part of that TV show is to interview guests. Given her nature, and her focus on marriage and family, it IS her responsibility to know about her guests, especially on the topics she will likely bring up.
I totally get the foot-in-mouth excuse thing. I do it, as well. But, when I do it I'm not failing at my job. So, I don't think this situation can be held to that same casual social standard.
Just my two cents.
And, Namo, agree with you about Comcast drawing additional attention. SO not necessary. And so disrespectful of their guest, Martin Short.
Finally, kudos to Martin Short for handling a tough situation with grace and kindness.

I think it's wonderful that those of you who know Kathy Lee Gifford like her so much.
I only know her from her tv persona. She takes mugging for the camera to an all time high. I think she (and now Hoda) both come across extremely phony.
And yes, she/they have lots of fans across America.

NYadgal, I do agree with you. If this were something that happened all the time I would be the first to say she shouldn't hold down the job. This one time major faux pax though should be a wake up call to her to carefully research and not just shoot off the mouth.
