I'm kinda surprised that this hasn't been posted yet. They were just talking about this on the View and they seemed very passionate about that the kid who was being picked on should not have been suspended. Except Whoopie who stated that she expected her kids to defend themselves but also expected them to face any consequences.
I disagree. The fact that the lengths of the suspensions are so different tells me that the school understands why he did what he did. But, they have to send a message that violence is not the way to solve problems. I know there are so many cases in this world of schools overreacting to things. But, I think they got it right in this case.
ETA: My local news brought up a good point last night. Did the person with the camera face any punishment? Obviously, they were egging this on.

Take a beating, don't fight back. This video should be required viewing at EVERY SCHOOL! If you are gonna bully someone be prepared for the consequences.

Posted: 3/16/11 at 12:10pmTotally agree, romantico. That kid was obviously taunting the heavy kid and wouldn't stop. He was probably shocked to sh#t that his victim picked him up and threw him to the ground, then, poor baby, limping around with a hurt knee. Serves him right.

That video was awesome! I'm sorry the kid was suspended but how great was it when he picked up the bully like a rag doll and just threw him down.

Posted: 3/16/11 at 12:31pmYes, it served the coward right. And there's something appealing about the underdog taking out the bully. But if the kid were not disciplined for violence, then the school is condoning violence, plain and simple. It doesn't matter if it's deserved or just. It would put the school in a very tricky situation for future incidents.

In that case,if it were an example they were trying to set suspend the victim for 4 days and the bully for 2 weeks.

The bully got 21 days and the victim got 4.

If they had been suspended for the same amount of time I'd say that there was a problem but the 4 days vs 21 days shows me that the school really looked at the situation.
I'm reminded of an incident that happened when I was in high school. A student asked another student to not smoke in the bathroom. When the other student didn't comply he got the fire extinguisher. All of the non-smoking students saw him as a hero and many of the teachers/staff did as well. But he had to be punished.

Agreed. The bullied kid had size on his side - enough to simply push the smaller kid away. It was the fact that he acted so aggressively that probably got him four days instead of one or two.

I'm sure I'm wrong--I'm just so on the bullied kid's side--but I'm not seeing anger-control issues. He was being physically assaulted, he clearly wasn't as fast as his assailant, but he had size on his side. I doubt if he'd simply pushed the kid away if the assault would have ended.
Could his response have been more calibrated? Sure. But this wasn't simply a matter of name-calling. He was responding to an assault.

Posted: 3/16/11 at 10:02pmReg - I'm definitely in the bullied kid's corner. But, when he 'snapped', there was an uncontrolled quality to his response. Understandable? Absolutely - but that still makes me hope that he gets some attention to address his processing capabilities. Honestly, more for his sake than anything else.
