Rath - you are correct. If they had left the bear for dead, they'd be murderers. But if they try to help him, it is cruel treatment??? I don't get it!
If they just keep the bear in a zoo, they don't have to worry about it going back into the wild, now would they?

I saw this story on the news last night and thought it was ridiculous. So he's being hand-fed and "tamed" to a degree. So what???? Once he gets too big, just keep him in the nice zoo so he can bring joy to millions of children and adults and help educate the public over his - hopefully long - lifetime.
Edit: I just read the article, which was far more detailed than the blurb I saw last night. I liked the Berliner politician's dig at Bavaria. That was pretty funny.

I think the activists are completely wrong here. What about Steve Irwin and the Australia Zoo? He raised many of those animals and they are very happy and healthy at his zoo. Steve Irwin always said that as long as the animals are challenged and not bored, they will be fine. He also said that it is very important to educate people about animals so that they learn to love them and eventually help in conservation.

With all this talk about the declining numbers of polar bears and their possible extinction if we're not careful, I would think that an animal rights group would be jumping for joy that the zoo was doing everything they could to help the baby bear.
