John, people like Bill Cosby, Oprah, Jesse Jackson are just a few people that have made public their hate of the word. Eminem is even abstains from using it.

In the Caribbean, you wouldn’t believe the rampant usages of the “n” word or its variations. Black, West Indians, latins, Asians and whites down there often use terms like "n*itous" in common practice. It doesn't offend anyone.

Here it is offensive. I know white people that hate being called "white trash," but it's funny when they use it.

It's just not black and white man. Language doesn’t work that way. It's constantly changing and morphing. A straight person calling someone a gay person a "faggot" at work might be offensive. The same gay person can turn around and call his gay friend a "faggot" and it's ok.

There is so much involved with intention and interpretation of meanings. I’ve been called a lot of things by my friends and people that were not my friends. I know when someone is being hateful to me. This argument isn’t even worth arguing. There are bigger injustices with race, sex and class running rampant in this country as it is.

Sure it does. The semi-colon indicates that they are two independent clauses joined together.

Actually both clauses in the sentence are approving the use of the word.

You know how that negates any valid point you might have? If you think "white trash" is funny when someone calls a person that, then who's to say Cleetus doesn't think calling you a "___" isn't funny?

Unless that's not what you meant. If you meant it sounds funny coming from foreigners, fine, if you just think it's funny, not fine.

Is it just so hard for non-blacks to deal with? Do you feel like you MUST use that word?

I think it's a cultural thing that will eventually pass anyway.

I say, just don't say it, and if you hear someone else use it, just go on about your business--I hear crazy sh!t every day that I ignore.

I had an incident today as a matter of fact--I am temping at a large office in midtown and as I was signing in with security, one of the guards called his co-worker a faggot. I still haven't decided whether or not to report this person. If I thought he was gay, I wouldn't report him, but I'm SURE he isn't. And if he hadn't been black I would have also let it go--but when I hear a minority use a slur, it REALLY makes me mad.

How is he going to say something like that when he has almost certainly been harassed in his life?

Um actually, it is the case. Just look at the demographics of dropout rates in US high schools. I may have been a little overboard with the gourmet lunches, but those are just a few fringe things I have seen. On a very basic level minority students by and large suffer under the US public school system, be it "no child left behind" or low-income areas. See any concentrated area of minority children. You are right there are plenty of poor white schools. Plenty, but nowhere close to the percentages of non-whites getting the shaft. Why should there be any poor people in the richest country in the world?

Anyone in this country post-Katrina climate assuming there is not a vast adversity in class and races in this country need to wise up. I haven't even come close to sinking my ship, it is not racist for me to point out that by and large white people have access to better education, healthcare, employment, neighborhoods, police forces, heck even voting booths. That is where the REAL racism is in this country. The system continues to fail these people and yet others thrive.

I’m not saying there are not poor white people. There are plenty and they get the same hose job minorities do. Just not on the same scale.

I'm totally with you, me...BUT you do have to be careful with these topics not to add on other issues that have to do with race. Yes, the PERCENTAGE of black versus white kids in crappy schools is almost certainly fvcked up, but there are just as many (perhaps not the same share) white people living in poverty.

And just because you haven't seen white kids in poor schools doesn't mean they don't exist--most kids don't go to school in palaces regardless of where they are--I did a kids show tour where we performed in schools all over the US and trust me, the lack of proper public schools isn't a race issue--it's a money issue. At least in inner-city schools, there are programs for kids who want to better themselves, whereas in small school districts like I attended, there is NO help of that kind at all.

Because we live in a capitalist society based on competition--if someone can win, that means someone else loses. In order for someone to become rich, we have to have poor people--there's only so much money to go around.

That richest chart is off the chart. It's per capita only. Luxembourg only has half a million people and Norway about 5 million. The US (300 million) could buy and sell both of those countries.

I can't say that I've ever used the word, except in a discussion, such as this. The point isn't whether or not I want to use the word; but, rather, whether or not I have the right to use the word. I have a right to use any word I want to use. My only point is that if people want the word eradicated from use, STOP USING IT! Don't use it then say I can't. That's stupid. The same thing applies to any word that a particular faction finds "offensive". We just happen to be referring to that one particular word in this thread. My feeling applies to faggot and kike and any other "offensive" word.

ErikJ1972 gets the point. This isn't about who gets to use the "N" word. It's about a guy using the word in an inflammatory and hostile way. If a friend says "You're such an asshole," you give him a dirty look. If he screams "You GODDAM ASSHOLE," it means something else. Personally, I think using the "N" - whatever, using "n*" is gross, whoever uses it. I've tried to "reclaim" the word but it's not happening!
