Acting is the problem. There's many colors to the "rainbow" and that doesnt only refer to race. This is forgotten too much of the time.
I blame the personals for forcing labels!

Well, I think I find that insulting. That 'straight' is an apology.
...just trying to make the point that labels are unnecessary. We're all individuals and we can, and should, act whatever way makes us feel comfortable.

"straight-acting" is what the, as my friend calls them, "Uncomfortable Gays" call themselves. They (often PRETEND) to be the archetype of classical masculinity and qualify their homosexuality at every opportunity with "...but I don't ACT gay" or "...but you'd never know I was gay" or "but I'm not all queeny or anything". They (claim) to enjoy such "manly" things as football (sports in general), beer, working out, huntin', fishin', campin', and every other activity that can be truncated with an "in'". They are also extremely nasty to the more effeminate of our brethren, love to spout derogatory comments about the "queens" and the "nellies" and the "fairies", but have no problems taking it up the ol' chocolate starfish when they get home.

Posted: 7/28/06 at 1:28pmJaily..would you be considered "straight-acting" ?

JG, my cousin, Lance's boyfriend, isn't exactly manly. He's buff and cut and big and strong, but he's pretty effeminate - so I don't think Lance can be counted as being nasty to the effeminate brethren.

Yes, Bway and Jaily. I am familiar with the 'term'.
My point is that it's insulting to me...
Furthermore, there is no ONE way for straight people to act. Why any of us should ever be expected to behave or conform to what another group expects is beyond me.

Not meant to insult straight people, Addy.
It is meant to apologize for being gay, by being able to pass for straight. As if being gay isnt just fine by itself.
(hee...chocolate starfish...do you make these up, Jaily?)

If by that you mean, "Straight to bed", then yes, Boobsy...I'm as straight-acting as they come
Sorry, Addy. I had gathered from a previous post that you didn't know what the term meant...and yes, it is insulting to EVERYONE.

Jaily, the best part about 99% of the so-called "Straight acting" guys I know is that they're all queenier than the most unabashed queens I know.
as I said, it's just being apologist for who you are.
That Lance felt he had to add his "Straight" apology to this public coming out is just...well, I guess I should say it's expected. still, it's not as if their next question was, "so are you the bottom?" There is no reason to qualify a statement such as, "I'm gay." Your actions will define your personality well enough.
#288Lance Bass: I'm Gay
Posted: 7/28/06 at 1:30pmWhy does there have to be one uniform way of 'acting'?

Posted: 7/28/06 at 1:31pmPerhaps young Mr. Bass isn't as evolved and enlightened as the rest of us, but he's finally out. And he's learning and growing, as humans do.

I know many, many men who are straight. None of them acts the same way.
Maybe I should get them to understand that there is a way they're supposed to behave?
After all, their sexual orientation dictates every aspect of their lives.

Addy, that is the point, my dear!
Noone should have to act....just be who they are. Unfortunately, we gay people learn as children what is and isnt acceptable behavior. Like a glacier, hopefully that is changing.
And you know there will be a porn film called BassMaster.

Posted: 7/28/06 at 1:36pmin my experience, it's some of the most traditionally "effeminate" (no value judgement placed with those quotes) gay men who most savagely criticize other gay men (particularly more "masculine" ones) for being "queens". It's a paradox. I try to avoid such people. While the presumption is that the "butches" all trash the "fems", most of the time both seem to just ignore the other clique which has chosen alternate means of expression.

"None should have to act...just be who they are."
So, why all the criticism of gay people who don't act one certain way?

I just find it interesting the way this thread has turned from delight at a newly-out gay celebrity into bashing him for his words - he's treading some very difficult waters here. I'm disappointed in the harsh response.
And maybe I'm taking it all too personally and should just stay out of it here.

It's the qualifying it as being "straight acting" that is a problem, Addy...
It's the equivilent of saying
I'm gay, but I aint no sissy. As if there is something wrong with being a sissy...like me.

Posted: 7/28/06 at 1:41pmI find it interesting that the gay community, as much as we spout the need for tolerance, are quite intolerant of the diversity within our community.

I try not to bash anyone. I have too much material personally for reflexive use in just such character assassination....(waiting for the wordplay on "assass")
