Let's replace the names in the joke and see if it really is funny.
During the seventh inning, Malia Obama was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.

"Malia doesn't have a track record as a whore."
Please point me to the place where Willow, Palin's 14 year old daughter who was at the game with her, has behaved in a manner to deserve this?

"He was clearly making a joke about Bristol."
But Bristol wasn't at the game with her mother, it was Willow. That's why the Palins are angry. Making sex jokes about a 14 year old who didn't do anything is disgusting.

Yes, and I'm sure the average Letterman watcher knew exactly which Palin daughters were and weren't attending the ballgame.
Letterman should have just called her the White House dog. That would have been really funny.

Posted: 6/11/09 at 1:41pmI'm confused by this whole thing. I was half-paying attention when they were talking about it on The View. Did he make the joke knowing he was making it about a fourteen-year-old, or did he make the joke thinking Willow was Bristol?

You don't believe the joke was about Willow any more than the Palins do. They (and you) are trying to score debating points.
I know Bristol wasn't at the game, but these were jokes, not reportage.
You can certainly argue that they were distasteful jokes, if you'd like.

Willow was at the ball game..but it is STILL clear that the joke was about Bristol...
..because Bristol got knocked up in high school.. Hence the knocked up joke.
The Palin's could have had their son with them and it would have been clear the joke was about Bristol.

I'm sure Elisabeth's brain cell blew up.

Yes, Letterman's writers should have somehow verified that it was the daughter who was unable to live by her abstinence-only education and who has since given birth to a child without benefit of holy matrimony.
It would be much easier to buy the Palin's faux-outrage over their-termed "rape joke" if their spokesperson didn't follow up with the line about having to keep Willow away from Letterman. Yeah, that's taking it very seriously.

Posted: 6/11/09 at 1:50pmOh Pahleeze. So many comedians made fun of Chelsea Clinton- even SNL did a skit on her. The Clintons didn't make a big deal out of it! I'm so sick of Sarah Palin sticking herself in the spotlight! Letterman apologized- enough already. It was a joke that didn't go over well- let's not read too much into it! Malia and Sasha aren't even of the age to make such a joke and I don't believe they will ever be in a situation similar to the Palins! The Obama girls have CLASS! Oh and of course Elisabeth had to make a big stink and act like she was going to boycott Letterman- yeah, I'm sure he's shaking in his boots! Elisabeth was constantly interrupting Barbara Walters- even Walters had to ask her to let her speak for herself!

I think I remember Clinton did remark about the SNL skit (the one with Madonna and one of the male cast members playing Chelsea -- was it Chris Farley?). But beside the point, the two items under debate WERE a little tacky and sexist, but the Palins so blatantly twisting them beyond that kinda cuts down on the sympathy I might have had.
And it's not like Letterman wrote that himself, anyway.

"I'm so sick of Sarah Palin sticking herself in the spotlight!"
She didn't stick herself in the spotlight. She was invited to a baseball game and brought her daughter. Blame that pervert David Letterman for putting Palin in the spotlight. Her response was only doing what conservative mothers do: trying to protect her children.

"Blame that pervert David Letterman"
You're losing it right there. You're paraphrasing the talking point and are coming across as completely disingenuous.

It's Palin's fault for naming their children such ridiculous names.
Actually, it's the best thing that's happened to that pinhead in months...she's thrilled.

Because we all know that Joe Biden was the perfect choice.

And the Obama girls are too busy killing their classmates to engage in sexual activity.

I can't get past Goth's "Let's replace the names in the joke and see if it really is funny. "
Isn't' that hypocritical. If we (and I mean the noted liberals you despise so much) tried to pull that "argument" you'd say it was irrelevant because that's not what occured.
Goth - that's not what occured. The joke was about the Palins. NOT the Obamas. And the joke was CLEARLY about Bristol. At worst, Letterman's writers are "guilty" of not confirming who was in attendance.
Bitching about what if's and could've have beens is silly. No matter what way you lean politically.
What if Letterman had said that about Dakota Fanning
What if Letterman had said that about Miley Cyrus
What if Letterman had said that about the Billy Elliots
You could play THAT game all day. The joke was aimed and meant about Bristol. If you believe otherwise, I have a friend in Nigeria who I can recommend for banking.
