re: Man kills himself at Ground Zero due to Bush's reelection

" I pointed out that I don't even think that this suicide was meant to catch media attention. He shot himself in a subway station in such a manner that no one even noticed until someone thought he was asleep in there. He didn't stand on the sidewalk and scream "I hate Bush!" then shoot himself. He didn't set himself on fire. He didn't even leave an anti-Bush note. The whole election connection is just a matter of inference. So stop with the attention whore crap."
Touche, agreed.

re: Man kills himself at Ground Zero due to Bush's reelection

My feelings go out for this poor man's family and loved ones.

I just don't understand why people can't get over this. This is America, where we vote and pick who's President. I know its shocking that the man who won the popular election and the electoral election won the entire Presidency--but hey, its America! You get what you vote for. Yes, I am disappointed Kerry threw in the towel so fast. Some call it chilvary, but some would say "Hey--I don't want a quitter as a President!"

Let's all look forward to the shaky future our country is bound to have. Muddle through these next 4 years, and be thankful that Kerry didn't have to waste his 4 years as a President trying to clean up Bush's mess, and thus having something horrific happen during his reign that would be considered his fault.

Move on

Kerry didn't "throw in the towel." He conceded once it was clear he'd lost, just like every losing candidate before him.

And like I said, I doubt this man killed himself just over the election. People just don't work that way- he probably had pre-existing depression.

Yes---I am a firm believer that 9/11 and some other things were not Bush's fault at all. How can it be that a President only in office for 9 months be at fault for certain things like 9-11??

But I'd rather not be political...back to Broadway speak!

re: Man kills himself at Ground Zero due to Bush's reelection

"I know its shocking that the man who won the popular election and the electoral election won the entire Presidency--but hey, its America! You get what you vote for."

You make an important point here -- the Bush supporters got who they voted for when Bush received the most popular votes in U.S. history. But, this election also made Kerry the "second most voted for" presidential candidate in U.S. history. It makes sense that Democrats who were voting for the first time and had tons of friends and family voting for the first time would be both surprised and disillusioned by the election's results. There was always talk of the anti-Bush ranks coming out to vote in droves, but more infrequent were reports that Bush supporters might trump the Democrats by returning to the polls in much greater numbers than they did in 2000.

"Let's all look forward to the shaky future our country is bound to have. Muddle through these next 4 years, and be thankful that Kerry didn't have to waste his 4 years as a President trying to clean up Bush's mess, and thus having something horrific happen during his reign that would be considered his fault."

Here you make another good point about why people are having difficulty recovering from the election. Many people have the benefit of witnessing any bad deeds likely to occur over the next four years from a distance. For others - especially GLBT people - the bad deeds (so to speak) will effect them directly. Perhaps the man who committed suicide felt that Bush's reelection would have a direct [negative] impact on his life or the life of someone very close to him. In any case, he's gone now so there's little use in criticizing his suicide, per se. Let's just hope that others don't make that decision.

I was in no way whatsoever critizing or trying to make light of that man's suicide. I feel for him and his loved ones.

I just had to get all that off my chest, b/c its been bothering me for the last couple of days. And nobody at college wants to hear anything at all remotely associated with a reasonable reason for why Bush won. Because apparently America is a theocracy, not a democracy---(or at least that is what they were chanting yesterday on campus.)

re: Man kills himself at Ground Zero due to Bush's reelection

Well, considering that [in the exit polls] most Bush supporters identified "moral values" as their top reason for voting Bush, is it completely unreasonable to chant "America is a theocracy!" ?

Damn right it's taking it too far. You could say they're chipping away at the wall between church and state, but the thing has hardly collapsed. If you really think it has, you've been in the U.S. too long and gotten spoiled. :)

re: Man kills himself at Ground Zero due to Bush's reelection

For all of you who think religious freaks are taking over our country, I have a question. You have a choice of 2 candidates:

Candidate A: Pro-war, corporate whore, gives tax cuts to the rich, kills the environment. Also pro-choice and for gay rights.

Candidate B: Against the war, wants to cut corporate and rich people's tax loopholes, environmentalist. Also pro-life and against gay rights.

Who would you choose?

It is really poignant that people feel the need to turn this thread into something negative--worse than a man taking his own life. My love goes out to the family of the man. And pity on those of you who are being so small as to turn this thread into something nasty.

re: Man kills himself at Ground Zero due to Bush's reelection

There's no denying that Christianity has figured into recent legislative decisions, and the campaigns of both Bush and Kerry. I don't know what to call the country, however. It's not quite a theocracy, and democracy has become such a flimsy word. I wouldn't say that Americans are "spoiled" to live in a country where religion only oppresses them 'to a certain extent.' Ideally, no one anywhere should be subject to laws or discipline based on religious beliefs that they don't share. Certainly there are countries to which Americans could emigrate and have to deal with less Christian political rhetoric than they do here.

FYI, this is the Off-Topic Board. Please no Idina on this thread unless she had some comments regarding the man's suicide (and I'm not one of the Wicked detractors; I actually own the CD and the novel on which it's based).
