I wonder if Dr. Gupta has any comments on this? Perhaps he can tell Mr. Reimer that the healthcare system is not broken.

Missouri man charged with murder of his wife
Stanley Reimer kissed wife, tossed her from fourth floor balcony
He told police he could no longer afford her medical bills
Criste Reimer was blind, had cancer and weighed 75 pounds
KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) -- A man threw his seriously ill wife four stories to her death because he could no longer afford to pay for her medical care, prosecutors said in charging him with second-degree murder.
According to court documents filed Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court, Stanley Reimer walked his wife to the balcony of their apartment and kissed her before throwing her over.
The body of Criste Reimer, 47, was found Tuesday night outside the apartment building, near the upscale Country Club Plaza shopping district.
Stanley Reimer, 51, was charged Wednesday. He remained jailed on $250,000 bond and was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.
In the probable cause statement filed with the charges, police said Reimer was desperate because he could not pay the bills for his wife's treatment for neurological problems and uterine cancer.

I'm with robbie and SM2. He couldn't have smothered her with a pillow? Or, hey, maybe not have killed her?

Seems to me, this man's mental condition matched his wife's physical condition.
Her last moments don't bear thinking about...

Wait... so behind Curtain #1 we have a crazy-in-the-head murder and guaranteed jail time.
Behind Curtain #2, we have bankruptcy, humiliation and Medicaid.
I don't get choosing Curtain #1, even in the heat of the moment. Did that really sound "better" to him at the time?
Who exactly was he thinking of in that illogical situation?

Regardless, he was not in his right mind.
It's pretty God-awful.

I've known eight suicides in my lifetime - depression is a cruel bitch - yet we as a society prefer not to address mental health issues, and the neurochemical research gets nowhere near the funding other research subjects get.
It was really striking that in the VA Tech aftermath almost everyone advocated gun control but only Bill Richardson mentioned mental health funding, and it was only the briefest mention in passing.
I've been toying with the idea of going back to school. One field I've been considering is microbiology so I could work on the neurochemistry and genetics of addiction and/or depression, but there are scant research opportunities out there. It's just not a priority in the U.S.
