finebydesign--I assume that comment was directed at me? For your information, Neal Patrick Harris and I love each other very much and our relationship is a beautiful and powerful force for good in the universe. We just have to keep it very private because he is looking for the right time to tell his partner, who is, like, totally unstable and may seriously just go beserk when he hears that NPH and I are running off to raise unicorns together.

Deadspin has had a weird run of successful little investigative stories, hasn't it? I vaguely remember them doing work to uncover a serial plagiarizer at ESPN, too. Which mostly goes to show how very, very said the state of "prestige" sports journalism is.

Well from a journalistic point of view (and never a sports watcher), I've never understood sports commentary. There is always this accepted bias and slant from the commentators. They make these predictions and things and have sides, so strange to me.
All that said, since the late 90s it seems the media in general has followed suit. All "news" is run out of the entertainment divisions of large media conglomerates.

Nate Silver actually has said the brush back from his stats and math models by political people was already experienced when he did the same for sports. Commentators in sports were offended somebody was going beyond 5th grade level math and if you read anything on the MVP race in baseball this past year, journalists were also hostile and embraced an anti-intellectual attitude.

Somebody posted something here earlier--I can't remember who it was--and I guess they've updated their post, because I can no longer find it, but it seemed to sum the whole situation up so neatly.

I definitely think it is the gay angle and mentioned how much it makes sense in one of my posts. It may be wishful thinking but the other option is sociopath.
It is fascinating that the media seems to all conveniently buy the Notre Dame story that he was duped. I think there was a report that Te'o was going to publicly reveal this or something but that still does not explain him and Notre Dame perpetuating it to the national media weeks ago. The reaction by the media seems to be done to cover their behinds as there are a million holes in their story and a lot of stuff to report. Even Notre Dame students are admitting stuff never added up.

Deadspin isn't at all at the same level of things as TMZ. In fact, I would say that it is more credible than that and more like a second tier ESPN. They have constantly reported stories accurate stories before places like ESPN got a hold of them. For example, they broke the news about the Favre sex scandal when he was with the Jets before ESPN got wind of it. And, there are others but that is just the first example that comes to mind. They are accurate with what they report it's just that people are weary of them because they aren't ESPN.
As for the story at hand, I think that they were trying to rev this player up to be a better Tebow. In that they were going to take a college player and use his personal story as a way to sell him in the NFL. After all, if his story with this girlfriend were true and not part of a hoax, it's a good human interest story that would get non football fans the itch to see him play even if they know nothing about football.

I mean, is it possible that Te'o is naive and pure and really thought he had a substantial internet girlfriend and was too embarrassed to come out and say that they had never met? I... guess. But I honestly cannot wrap my head around that.

This is pretty different from reporting Stuart Scott have flirty text messages and photos of Brett Favre's peen (which is a very TMZ thing to do). This involves somebody perpetuating a lie and possibly a university involved in it for good PR. I am not sure those other two cases really matter other than getting page views which is Gawker Media's business model. If you read the GQ profile of their former editor AJ Daulerio (a really different guy from founder Will Leitch), that is where Deadspin's TMZ comparison comes from. Tommy Craggs is a pretty innocuous editor and as Plum pointed out, under him Deadspin found that espn.com plagiarizer and reported it.

OK, so no one really knows whether he met her in person or not? I agree with whoever said, why wouldn't he have attended her funeral? Or contacted her family? Or did she have a fake family in on it? How could he not have been in on the hoax?

I just finished reading an article in The New York Times that was talking about a new online phenomena that is popping up. It's called "catfishing." The basic idea is that someone creates a fictional online persona complete with phone calls, names of parents, family members and friends etc. Then someone "meets" this person online and forms a relationship with what they are given. This typically happens with people who are lonely or a little bit depressed etc. They get into a comfort that consists of just talking etc that meeting never really crosses their mind.
With that said, I am not saying that this is the case (only because no one really knows what is going on here.) But, I think that it is a possibility that maybe Te'o had something wrong with him that allowed him to fall for someone that wasn't real. I know that many people here are asking things like why he didn't attend her funeral or how come they've never met. Things that generally make sense to most people and are reasonable questions to ask. Yet, I am asking, what if there was something mildy mentally wrong with him? People paint a picture of a sports star as being Mr. Popular with friends etc, but maybe there was something there that no one was seeing. Not saying at all it is anything major, but what if it was just something a little off mentally?

Actually it is new enough that MTV is doing a reality series called "catfish" where they take people who have had these kinds of relationships and play matchmaker. It is something that is a possibility, and it's not like it was something that was created for the Te'o situation either.
