Marc Shaiman's "Prop 8: The Musical"

You're right. I was just trying to be nice (which is NOT my calling card). I was originally going to say that I was sorry that the gays on the board take everything I dislike that they don't so personally.

Damn. I thought it was terrific. And for free, too.
I appreciate it when a bunch of talented people put their hearts and dancing feet into something that's not about their making money. At least not about THEM making money.
Way to go, Mark!

I heart Phyllis and some of the people on this board might as well be Mormons. Ridiculous.

Do you think it will transfer to Broadway? I heard that Grease is closing.
I can totally see Cehno in the NPH role and Cheyene (*sigh) in the John C. Riely role!

I agree with iflit.
The totally anonymous bitchtastic posters at DL are mostly raving about the video (the production value and assemblage of that cast alone make it rave-worthy in my opinion), which I would a) tend not to expect from them and; b) must be why that place feels a little more "comfortable" to me that BWW's Land of "Amazing" does on most days.
Of course, there were few who decried "the stereotypes" and Marc Shaiman responded.

Namo,
Shouldn’t that clam be vertical?

Vertical clams and all, I loved the video!
Why does every "gay agenda" opus have to be "all things to all gays?"
Did it nail every issue we have with the ultra-conservative freaks? No. Did it cure cancer? No. Well, not yet. Did it answer all the questions we have, they have, and give us answers to everything including the cure of the common cold?
No.
Well, shucks, I guess it SUCKED then.
I'm glad they made it. They spent some serious time on it. It made me laugh, and hopefully made a few people think.
Opening the door to discussion is half the battle.
Getting all issues across for every gay person on the planet is next to impossible.
And Marc isn't the Gay Evita. He's not the poster child for "all things to all gays."
The descamisados. The shirtless ones. (giggles)
I'm just wondering when this will transfer from Sacramento to Broadway, and who will be the third understudy for Neil Patrick Harris, and does he sign, and if so, when does he come out of the stage door, and what is is holiday schedule?
That's all.

See, if I were writing one of these, I'd think, "Equal rights? Nope, not funny."
But the Bible? Hilarious! Freaky hilarious.
And economics? Shopping? Purchase power? Pretty damn funny.
And people get that. You're hitting them where they live.
But show them an "equals" sign and they think its a math problem. They'll run screaming for the hills.
Save that story for the "dramatic musical" Marc has yet to write. Where the dying lesbian drops to the ground, center stage, sings her power ballad, and then dies. (Winning a Tony, of course.)
Then you'll get your Equal Rights Musical.
For now? I'll take "religion" and "economics" for $2000, Alex.

Let me spell it out for you then.
"Economics" and "religion" are in Marc's video.
Equal rights is not. That's what posters were talking about (and pointing out) on Page 1. Sorry if that's too far back for you.

Posted: 12/3/08 at 10:46pmIs there some site that tells us which things we like and which things we don't? 'Cause I think Phyllis might be making up her own mind and that's obviously where she's getting into trouble. It's so much easier when everyone just marches in lock step and we all tell each other what great taste we have.

While not really "funny" I think this other video on Funny or Die may make a better arguement for those who didn't appreciate the message of Prop 8: The Musical:

Sorry, Joe. That's the problem with us 'mos. We were raised in a world that told us we were unique and different (among other negative words). We think, make decisions, and make "life choices," on our own. We were carefully taught.
There is no Gay Unified Voice.
So whenever there's a cause, or something that might benefit from us rallying together, we run off in all directions and criticize each other, rather than seeing we're really fighting different aspects of the same battle.

Oh, Jesus F*CKing Christ. I just found it unfunny and unoriginal. I said I liked its star power.
I'm more than behind the cause, even when I'm being condescended to by people who disagree with me. So tut-tut at me because I'm "picking" at it, try to tell me it's the equivalent of "Steam Heat", or just imply that I'm an idiot, I really don't care. I've long since accepted that I tend to march out of step with the rest of you.

I find all this back and forth amusing. Such strong opinions about a skit.
I fall into the category who think it's not funny, and that it misses the point of the whole issue.
But I am 100% behind the cause and I support it both financially and volunteer-wise to the best of my ability.

Posted: 12/4/08 at 10:29amIt's not possible to be that, Taz. If that's how you feel you're a clucking chicken (clever shout out to Marc!), someone who just doesn't get it, or someone who is trying to undermine the cause.
