Ooo, I want to order a print of that poster. I love the costumes in the movie, I am amazed every time I watch it, esp considering it was 1939. Compared to the crap they have now...
I'd love to see the Tinman costume too
Ever since I went to Fordham Follies last weekend I can't get the line "follow the locker lined halls" out of my head, its annoying

Tin Man's has looong since been destroyed. The ones surviving are:
1) Multiple Dorothy's, housed by Woosley Ackerman (If you live in the DFW Area, OR go to Planet Hollywood in Disney World, those are FAKES. To show up on techinicolor properly, the dresses were pale pink and dark blue).
2) Scarecrow - In the Smithsonian
3) Winkie Costume and segments - eBay and William Stillman
4) Lion costume - up for auction every few years
5) Wicked Witch Hat - MGM Studios in Disney World
6) Rest of the Witch Costume - Was on display at the old Land of Oz theme park
7) A Few Munchkin costuemes... Meinhardt has either a replica or the real Coroner, Jerry Maren has his Lollipop Costume (Green), and Margaret Pelgrinni has her Flower Pot costume...and some others are still floating around.
Emerald City person's gloves. William Stillman.

Over the years, I've seen several Oz costume pieces in person:
Michael Shaw was/is the owner of the stolen pair of Ruby Slippers. It's the mismatched pair that "matches" the Smithsonian's two shoes. Shaw's shoes were in pristine condition, and have never come up for auction. I have photos of me with them in his apartment. And to answer your question WW11, they still haven't been recovered.
Michael also has one of the on-camera Dorothy dresses and blouses. Pristine condition, as well. He has one of the Wicked Witch of the West's black hats (I think it might be the one used in the Thorpe footage that was ultimately scrapped), as well as a pair of her high-button black shoes, that were ultimately not used either.
He also has one of the yellow-tailed marching Munchkin soldier uniforms (made out of felt).
I've also seen Jerry Maren's Lollipop Guild costume.
The B&W Dorothy dress (actually "sepia tone" and white) used for the one on-camera shot where Dorothy opens the door into Munchkinland (it was worn by her double Bobbie Koshay for that shot).
I've seen the Lion's courage medal.
I've seen the Arabian pair of Ruby Slippers, created for testing but ultimately scrapped. These belong to Debbie Reynolds.
I've seen an alternate version of the Dorothy dress, also owned by Debbie Reynolds. The dress was scrapped, but it can actually be seen twice in the finished film: Once in the small photo that Prof. Marvel takes out of Dorothy's basket briefly. Judy is wearing it then. And it can also be seen hanging on a hook in Dorothy's bedroom, as she gets up to go to the front door after the cyclone.
I've also seen the Cowardly Lion's wig (including ears).
I've seen several of the actual matte paintings used in the final film.
Each time I stood in front of these... as you can imagine... I was awestruck.
But I think the one piece of Oz memorabilia that "blew me away" the most... was standing in front of a tiny well-worn pencil, with a hand-written note card by L. Frank Baum that read: "This is the pencil that I used to write The Wizard of Oz."
I must have stared at it for several minutes. A pencil!

The sign of a true geek:
Totally just got jealous of B12B seeing the pencil.
How big are those matte paintings?

Not terribly huge, husk. I thought they'd be bigger. Three feet wide at the most. I think they were probably closer to 2.5 feet wide.
Chalk on black cardboard, as I recall. And still quite beautiful.

When the movie played at the Alex Theatre in Glendale (about 8 or 9 years ago?), the matte paintings were on display in the lobby, along with Maren's Lollipop Guild costume. And Jerry Maren himself was there signing autographs. He also spoke before the screening started.
The Lion's courage medal and Dorothy's B&W dress were on display at the Century City Mall when their movie theatres first opened (back in 1987). They also had Bogart's trench coat from Casablanca and Claudette Colbert's head dress from Cleopatra (also Michael Shaw's). I remember thinking that the gingham dress was SO faded that all the color washed out. There was no card explaining about the dress. It wasn't until years later that I learned about the "special dress" for that one door-opening shot (B&W to color). I didn't know they used two actresses to get Dorothy into Munchkinland. Pretty cool. I wish I could see that dress again now, knowing how it worked. I have no idea where it is or who owns it.

B12B-
If it's not in Woosley Ackerman's possession, then it's in Willaim Stillmans. I wanna say that dress is in "The Wizardry Of Oz" and that will have the ownership credit...great book, LOADS of detail work and blueprints and other fascinating things.

Yeah, I suppose I could walk over to my bookshelf and look it up.
What a concept!

I could have done the same thing to verify...and I was wrong. Joseph M. Maddalena of Profiles in History apparently has it.
What happened to Glinda's dress?
#69re: McDonalds Oz Happy Meal Toys
Posted: 4/1/07 at 11:48am
Glinda's dress was the only costume in The Wizard of Oz that wasn't designed and built from scratch.
It was a modified ball gown originally worn by Jeanette McDonald in one of her '30s musicals with Nelson Eddy.
Billie Burke inherited the costume, which was "Adrianized" for The Wizard of Oz... and then (so I'm told) the costume was again modified, altered and re-conceived for several other films after that.
In other words... It don't exist no more.

Damn...
Did you ever see the Dave Barry joke about the Glinda dress? It was something to the effect of:
"The real reason Glinda didn't tell Dorothy the power of the shoes was because she was jealous that Dorothy's dress didn't make her hips look like a '52 Chevy Buick."
