Men don't touch each other anymore

Reason? Homophobia.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I touch myself. Does that count?

Seriously, I am a straight male but never had any problems showing physical affection towards male friends, including hugs, handshakes and an occasional pat across the back.

Men don't touch each other anymore

In all seriousness a few months back I watched a video on Buzzed of male best friends telling each other they love each other (in a platonic way) for the first time ever in their friendship. I found it quite odd as myself and my best friend who is a male tell each other we love each other all the time and hug frequently.

And yet we also get endless things recently (though--maybe notably--more out of the UK and other countries,) about how straight men are more physically affectionate with each other than they have been for decades, etc.

I know working and doing grad studies at a university with most students in the undergrad program being 10 years younger than me, guys mostly seem more comfortable with being physical with each other than I remember even a decade ago. (OK, re-reading that makes me think that people might wonder what classes exactly I'm involved with...) But certainly I think basic signs of affection like hugging each other when you greet are increasingly common.

Hugs and I love you's are always a part of get together's with childhood and still friends. But Eric is right I believe, this wasn't happening when we were younger.

Why do you deny that you made homophobic statements on here a few months ago?

Liza, I'm not a homophobe, if I was would I be on this message board? Think about it.

Then why have you happily admonished public displays of affection between homosexual men in several different threads over the last few months? Noting that it was "disgusting," in one of those threads?

I will return in the coming hours with links to prove it. Not sure why you deny it.

I am looking forward to an explanation from The Abscessory of how anything he links from SouthFL is more homophobic than trying to denigrate other gay men on this board by calling them old queens.

I think the change in male homosocial behavior is linked to both the gradual decrease in homophobia, and another thing that appears unrelated until you look at it: the rise of male physical culture to the mainstream.

For a while, the idealized, almost eroticized male body was exclusively associated with, not so much homosexuality as the idea of "gayness." But gym life, once considered (right or wrong) a distinct part of gay culture, began spilling over into straight mainstream, and with it came a sense of "body" and "body idealism" distinct from notions of the gay world. Before, a man was a man, and that's good, but a man's body was a MAN'S BODY, which must be a gay thing to touch or think about. By letting go of a certain amount of homophobic baggage, men in general have reclaimed their bodies as an organic part of themselves, not as a sexualized other.

As someone who teaches sixth graders, I've noticed that kids now are more "handsy" than they used to be. Boys are always hugging or touching each other, in a way that they definitely didn't a few years ago. They don't find anything abnormal in it at all, nor should they. It's strange, because as a straight male myself, I wouldn't act that way with my friends. I certainly don't judge the kids, but there's definitely a behavior change from when I was their age 25 years ago.
Hi, Shirley Temple Pudding.

Darque--as you say, they are complete related.
giving goodbye hugs, and being much more affectionate than I remember being at that age.

I think Jasonf is completely right.

I'm 53 and my best friends until this day are NYers I grew up with. My next door neighbor, the twins from across the street. Hugging and telling one another we love them happens whenever we get together. It never happened once when we were kids.

Obviously they've been secretly in love with you the whole time.

I thought the popularity of the "fist bump" represented the ultimate in expressing affection while avoiding contact.

I'm glad to hear the problem has been solved.

This is that scene in Manhattan Murder Mystery when Angelica Houston says she'll reveal whodunnit as soon as she gets back from the ladies room. But the 'band will never come back.
