Heading off to class, Kel, but wanted to stop in and offer my best wishes again. Hope your day was fun.
This was a wonderful treat, especially when I was feeling so sick. You guys are the best. I never realized how hard it would be picking the new CotD.
Kel, there are no wrong choices. Just have your fun and lovely memories and the next Celebrity will do the same!
That said, it was, as always, fun to see the responses from another person I know of but don't know. Congrats, Kel!
Thanks Bway, I know what you mean. I have two lists running through my head right now. Those I know and those I know of...
Let me offer you one more congratulations, Kel. May you have many, many more as good as yesterday!
Mamie, I think that that is the cutest thing I've ever seen! (Other than Tai playing- which he is doing a lot of right now)
Your answers almost make me wish I had stayed an education major....almost
I'm glad you had such a wonderful day!
Kitzy, I love it, but it is a lot of work and I know I am going into a field what makes you deal with a lot of BS. You may have made a smart choice.

I'm glad that people like you still pursue teaching, Kel.
Thanks DG, and thank you for your av. I am flattered beyond words.
Total threadjack Kel - Do you see what Tai is doing? He's eating bamboo - just like mom. This makes me cry! (When he's weaned he has to go to China.)

Another congrats to Kel for a wonderful reign as CotD. Thanks for sharing your answers to our incessant questions.
And, we're looking forward to learning your selection of the next victim/CotD! :o)

They said that about Hau Mei and she is still here I think she is 5 or so now. Maybe they will let us keep our baby. *fingers crossed*
I'm sure that's the hope in the minds and hearts of everyone at the zoo. They aren't saying anything like that out loud though. Right now the only thing they are saying is that they hope they can get an extension on the deal to have Tian Tian and Mai Xiang stay here indefinitely. Right now they have to be returned to China in 5 years.
I honestly don't think that China has asked for Pandas back in a long time. I could be wrong, but if the pandas are breeding then why take them back? These pandas being born in captivity are too accustomed to humans and would not do well in the wild. I just hope that they keep them here to drum up support for preservation of the wild pandas and rehabilitation for rescued pandas.

This is bad - you guys have me hooked on the pandcam. I should be doing work.
Kel - I thought it was written into the contract with China that any panda cubs would be returned when they reached a certain age (as Mamie said).
Moony, it is written in the contract, but it isn't often acted upon. China makes a lot of money from us having them here. I think that the National Zoo has to pay around $1,000,000 a year to have them. So now that the Zoo has three pandas that is $3,000,000 a year that China and its research efforts may not want to give up. Lets hope that pragmatism wins out.
ETA- Mamie, they usually aren't fully weaned until about 2 years of age so we still have some time with the little guy.

I think we'll have you negotiate the next contract!
Even the pandas are celebrating your special day!
oh how cute! I have to start watching that pandacam!
Kel, hope you enjoyed your day! I loved reading your posts.
I know WAY too much about these bears. That is probably why every single assignment that I am doing for all of my classes involves Pandas. I found it easier to make one giant teaching unit and break it down into pieces for the varying assignments that I have this semester. I have panda stuff all over the place. I just finished a power point presentation that I have to present tonight on pandas and finished a three page bibliography on the sources I've used. At least I am using my obsession with the pandacam to help me get work done. That way I can rationalize watching it non-stop; I'm doing research.
Kitzy found Hau Mei! I have a book (Thanks again Mamie!) all about her that has that adorable picture it in.

Pandacam
How could anyone have the heart to take a baby away from his mother like that? That's so wrong.
