Wow! Thanks! I didn't know this thread was here until shameless told me to check it. So I'll do all these questions in one swoop...
5 shows you loved/5 you hated?
Loved ~ The Vertical Hour, The Year of Magical Thinking, 110 In The Shade, The Drowsy Chaperone, and A Chorus Line (more the original since it was my first ever show)
Hated (or strongly disliked since I try not to hate) ~ Talk Radio, the tour of Evita I saw in Asheville, NC back in high school, Spring Awakening, The Rainmaker which I saw in Colorado when a little regional company did it, and Pleased to Meet You which my 7th grade class did. Ick.
When are you going to see Xanadu?
Possibly July 7. But I do plan to see it...if only to say I did.
What has given you the most pleasure in the last year?
Honestly the children I teach. They're special ed with varying degrees of mental retardation and emotional disturbance, so they're a challenge. But they really do make me smile. Them and actually being able to teach them this year after the Teaching Fellows 7-week boot camp.
What's something that we would be surprised to learn about you?
I'm not sure how surprising, but I played trombone for 7 years. That or the musical director for the touring company of Miss Saigon went to my church when he had a Sunday matinee off because his brother was a member (and one of my good friends), and he told me I had an excellent voice and asked where I'd trained. (I hadn't.)
If your house were on fire, what material possessions would you grab on the way out?
My photo albums are in a container all together so I can grab them; my flash drive because it has all the stuff on my computer on it; my playbills (also in a basket), and my signed window card from The Vertical Hour.
If we asked an important person in your life to describe you, what would he or she say? How accurate would it be?
I'll go with my Pam (she's my uncle's second wife and I've never called her aunt Pam, so she's "my Pam") and what she said about me this weekend. That I'm happier than I have been in a long time, that I give as much as I can, and that I'm one of the bravest people she knows for selling everything and moving to NYC when I started the NYCTF program. I'd agree with all but the bravest...I actually can be pretty shy.
What’s something that you’ve never done, but have always wanted to try?
There's a part of me that would really like to try bungee jumping... But I'll go with going on Safari in Africa because that actually could happen next year.
What’s the last great gift that you gave someone? And, that you were given?
That I gave someone... I've given "my" kids someone who believes in them and encourages them. I hope I've given them home and belief in themselves.
Which Peanuts character do you must associate with?
Schroeder. I've never really gone to the same beat as my peers...but I've got my own secret little vices. :)
What is your perfect day?
Being at Ocean Isle Beach, NC with my family and spending the better part of the morning walking the island with my daddy, just talking and hanging out together. I'm a total daddy's girl.
What is your favorite theatrical experience?
Oh man, I could name so many here. I'll limit it to two. First, being able to see The Vertical Hour from its third preview up to its closing. I saw it 10 times, and watching it evolve and everyone (save Bill Nighy who was pretty much the same) grow in their parts up to closing was incredible. Second, seeing The Year of Magical Thinking. Combining two of my favorites (Joan Didion and Vanessa Redgrave) in a work of that power...there was no way I wasn't going at least once. The first time was incredible. Even being back in Row L against the wall. I was shaking when I left (and immediately called my parents to tell them I would call in the morning to plan a weekend they could come up so we could see it) I was so moved. And the second time, I did student rush ~ and ended up with a full view...technically second row, but there was no seat in front of me. Watching Vanessa work from THAT close... Amazing.
Chocolate or Vanilla?
Chocolate unless it's dairy. Then vanilla. I'm weird in that i can eat dairy or I can eat chocolate, but I can't eat chocolate dairy (ice cream, pudding, etc.)
Cats or Dogs?
Dogs. I like cats, but I like breathing and being hive-free better. :)
Coke or Pepsi?
diet Coke
Which character from a play (musical or straight) do you most identify with? Why?
Lizzie Curry. Because all my life I've been the oddball, the plain (or fat or ugly) one, the one someone asks out on a dare. I've never really fit in, and I've never been one to hide my intelligence. But since I've done a lot of soul searching, I've realized that it doesn't matter what other people think or say...I'm beautiful in my own way just because I'm me.
Keep 'em coming! :)
No more questions???? *bats eyelashes*
What is your best or favorite personality trait? Least favorite?
What would the child you once were think of the adult or young adult you have become?
If you could script the basic plot for the dream you will have tonight, what would the story be?
What is the best advice you've ever heard and who gave it to you?
What keeps you awake at night?
Yay! I love questions! :)
What is your best or favorite personality trait? Least favorite?
Favorite ~ honesty. Least favorite ~ apathy.
What would the child you once were think of the adult or young adult you have become?
I think little me would be proud of and surprised by grown-up me. Part of me had always thought of teaching, but never really pursued it until the teaching fellows' program. And surprised because a) I moved to the big city all by myself and LOVE it and b) I'm a lot more honest about who I am and not AS worried about what others would think or think I *should* do or be.
If you could script the basic plot for the dream you will have tonight, what would the story be?
Basic? Girl meets girl, they hang out a lot and live not always happily, but together ever after. :)
What is the best advice you've ever heard and who gave it to you?
Be yourself ~ you are beautiful, loved and talented. Just be yourself. Given to me by a guy in the church I grew up in in Asheville ~ he was a child psychiatrist, and was always so wonderful to me, especially after choir performances and in general. (He also convinced my dad I didn't need to be medicated OR a psychiatrist's services when I was 12. I still got to go to a psychologist...where I was "diagnosed" as being a 12 year-old girl). But Dr. Matthews was awesome!
What keeps you awake at night?
The noise on my street ~ I think some people think they need to have a block party every night.
On a bigger scale ~ the state of the world in general today...Darfur, AIDS, Iraq, global warming, etc. I've always been hyper-sensitive about large-scale things.
Muscle23ftl ~ I now have an answer to the Xanadu question. July 2 8pm. :) Thank you TDF! :)
You've said in previous threads that you like to revisit your favorite shows. For you, what's the appeal of seeing certain shows multiple times? What kind of layers are added by repeat viewings?

It really depends on what a show does for me. Some (The Vertical Hour, The Year of Magical Thinking, No Child..., and 110 in the Shade) just really strike a nerve with me. It's hard to explain why...each hits something different. I do like seeing how the actors change in their roles and things that get added in. For example, in The Vertical Hour, when I saw it the first time, I had a hard time believing Nadia and Philip had been together a month, much less a year. Julianne and Andrew just weren't comfortable with each other yet. But watching them develop that relationship as the show went on was really neat. Those two in particular seemed to discover things about their characters even up until the end. In some cases it's subtle, so if you haven't seen it a lot, you wouldn't pick up on it. The settling in thing and really playing with a character I'm also seeing with 110 in the Shade ~ it just gets better each time I see it. So for me, there's the addition of more layers of and insight into the characters as well as noticing things I didn't see before. I need to get back and see Grey Gardens again for that reason ~ I know I missed things the first time I saw it.
Then there are shows like The Drowsy Chaperone which is my "I feel bad and need a pick-me-up" show. No matter what kind of mood I'm in, it always makes me laugh. :)
Congratulations! You have some wonderful answers!
What's the strangest dream you've ever had (keeping it appropriate, of course)?
And the strangest innappropriate dream....
I was leading up to that, Diva.
Aww, thanks! :)
What's the strangest dream you've ever had (keeping it appropriate, of course)?
Gotta be the one I had when I was four or five. And yes, I still remember it. It was scary ~ but the strange part comes in later... I'll explain.
My family used to go camping when I was really little. I dreamed that we'd gone to the place where we usually went, and while we were packing up to leave, I wanted to run down the path to get some water from the fountain. My parents said I could, so I did. I wasn't gone long ~ literally just got water and headed back. But they were gone. No sign of them anywhere. So I wandered around to try and find them...or somebody. When it got dark, I curled up under a tree and fell asleep... Then I woke up. It was dark. But there was a fire built. By wolves apparently. Because they were all circled around me. And they could talk. The lead one said something about a good meal and went to pounce at me. I woke up screaming just before his teeth hit my face.
The strange part is when I reay The Hobbit many years later, the scene with the wolf-like things (maybe wolves? it's been a while) was almost identical to the scene in my dream. And I'd never seen The Hobbit before.
Ha!
And the strangest innappropriate dream....
I really don't remember a lot of my dreams. Um...probably something involving a teacher when I was younger? I'm seriously such a nerd. :P
You didn't think it was odd that wolves had built you a fire?
I can't imagine doing that without opposable thumbs
Well, in retrospect, yes. However, at the time I was too freaked out to think about it. :) I don't think it was so much for me as to COOK me.
What 5 high profiled women would you wanna have a night of fun with?
Ooh...nice one. :)
And of course this is fantasy, so... Status doesn't matter. :)
Julianne Moore
Emily Saliers
Ellen DeGeneres
Idina Menzel
Maggie Gyllenhaal
Ha! So it's not that you liked The Vertical Hour that much, you just happen to have a crush on Moore!?
LOL
kidding,
and what 5(high profiled) women would you marry?
and of course, this a fantasy too.
It's both. :P Though honestly I didn't fully appreciate her until TVH.
Honestly? Same 5. :)
