Where does the NYT find these children?

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

"Ms. Murray, for example, recalled $2,000-a-month studios without cabinets, stoves or ovens, and with bathrooms that required a perilous climb over the sink to reach the toilet."

A "perilous climb". Really? Perilous?

If she is frightened by a small bathroom, I question whether she has what it takes to live in an urban environment.

This is the "Sex & the City" generation. You notice there are no men quoted in the article. Just women who think that living in NYC is living some high lifestyle.

In between this and the story of the NYU girl who couldn't live with noise, you'd think the NYT has an agenda...one which I totally approve.

Holy sexism, Goth. I'm sure the writer sought out a certain profile to interview, and that's why they're all women. No need to generalize an entire gender.

Did anyone look at the photos of the house on Waverly place? wow, who knew what was going inside there. I live a block away and pass the house every day.

Great, if these people have issues living on the Upper East Side, let me take their place. I would be happy living just about anywhere in NYC.

Just realized something. Maybe travel on the subway to get places doesn't bother me so much because where I live now you have at least a 15 minute drive in your own car to get places. That is unless you do live in the areas with all of the stores. But, you still have to walk a bit to get to them.

It's interesting how things change. When I first moved into the city, the Upper East Side was very chi chi, and much too expensive. Now, no one wants to live there and the rooms are big and rents low.

Platypus, the reason the writer wrote the article in this manner is because women like this want to read about themselves and have their dysfunction validated. I'm not saying that all women are like this, but you rarely find men saying things like "None of my friends will come visit me on the Upper East Side." The fact is that NYC is full of women who want to be Carrie Bradshaw.

My first NYC apartment was off York Avenue in the East 80s. It took forever to get anywhere, but it was cheap and I was just happy to be living in NYC.

I just think it's funny that these women are complaining that they can't live on the Lower East Side. People used to avoid the Lower East Side because the apartments down there were built for immigrants and had things like the bathtub in the kitchen. It's interesting because proximity to Central Park means nothing to them. Or maybe if they were living on the Lower East Side they would be complaining that they weren't close to Central Park?

Some people in NYC do live a high lifestyle...and live in apartments that have 360 degree views of the city.

“That’s when gentrification came to the East Village, the Lower East Side, ABC Town and Brooklyn, areas that young people wouldn’t have previously considered unless they were real adventurers.”

By the way, when was Alphabet City renamed ABC Town?

Then I guess I should consider myself lucky that even though I'm 27 and can't afford to move out of my house in New Jersey, at least I don't have to live all the way on the Upper East Side.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

"In the 1970s and ’80s, the Upper East Side was considered plenty cool enough for young New Yorkers, even those who could afford to live anywhere they wanted."

NOT!

Proverbially in the 70s and 80s never going above 14th Street was a badge of honor among the hip, at least the hip and white.

It's funny you keep bringing up Carrie Bradshaw and Sex and the City, Goth. Because Carrie did live on the Upper East Side. Then again, as a newspaper columnist, she did seem to have a lot more money than I assume one normally would make.

For once I actually enjoyed reading the comments that accompanied this article online. I lived in Manhattan for the first two years (shares, subletting, etc.). When it came time to move again, I found that I preferred living by myself, but couldn't find anything affordable or big enough for my tastes. I ventured out to Brooklyn and never looked back. For $700/month (1990-2000), I had a large one-bedroom on Court Street in Cobble Hill. I loved living in Brooklyn and didn't miss living in Manhattan whatsoever.

DC has the same type of person. I call them the "Entitleds".

Marianne2, was it definitely stated that she lived on the Upper East Side? I always thought she lived in the West Village.

But yes, Carrie did seem to live beyond her means. As many times as she ate out (even if it was her only meal of the day), she wasn't eating at McDonalds. Those boozy weekend brunches with the girls wouldn't come cheap. The clothes, the shoes, it all adds up.

Dottie, of course, you realize that a one bedroom apt. on Court Street in Cobble Hill now can't be had for anything even close to $700 (more like $2700)? And you probably also realize that certainly now - and maybe even then - Cobble Hill is considered a hell of a lot cooler than the East 90s.

Does no one remember their SATC lore? Carrie's apartment was rent controlled (remember those by-gone days?). It was a major plot point after the second break-up with Aidan. And yes...I believe Carrie lived on E. 74th Street, but her block was filmed in the West Village.

I've only caught the show in reruns when it was on the CW and TBS, so I didn't know all of the details.

Oh henrik, I know!! My landlord raised the rent to $1400 when I moved out in 2000. I have no idea why he didn't raise my rent in the 10 years I lived in that apartment. The building definitely needed some work.

I'm pretty sure Carrie lived in the village. They shot her building in my neighborhood. A building that looks very "village-y" and not UES at all.

The exterior location used was indeed in the Village (Perry Street), but the character lived on E. 73rd Street.
