"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Most Irritating Song of All Time

My vote would have to go for either of the following

"This is the song that doesn't end, it just goes on and on my friend. Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was. And, they'll continue singing it forever just because...." (repeat nonstop.)

Or this one

" I know a song that gets on everybody's nerves, everybody's nerves, everybody's nerves. I know a a song that gets on everybody's nerves and this is how it goes ...."

"If you try to shag my husband while I am still alive, I will shove the art of motorcycle maintenance up your rancid little Cu**. That's a good dear" Tom Stoppard's Rock N Roll

Most Irritating Song of All Time

Obviously none of you have ever heard The Christmas Shoes.

Let's review why it is irritating:

a Christmas song about a mother's death

said dying mother sends her child out on Christmas because she needs new shoes for when she meets Jesus (and they've decided that's going to be tonight)

the man who is the narrator of the song gets all teary-eyed and pays for the dying mother's Meeting Jesus Shoes

If Christmas, death, and a stranger helping a child aren't schmaltzy enough for you, they throw in a children's choir at the end...just to prove how schmaltzy they really can be

Most Irritating Song EVER
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Key Largo. It should get an extra point because a family friend wrote it and I have to hear it pretty damn often.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

Most Irritating Song of All Time

The first time I heard The Christmas Shoes was in my boss's boss's office. She wanted us to hear this wonderful, touching new song that had just come out so we stood around her computer listening. I couldn't believe how horrible it was (but I had to repress my true feelings in front of my superiors). If I had heard it in a different context, I would have thought it was a South Park parody. Words cannot describe how awful this song is. And since it has now become ubiquitous on Christmas stations, we're doomed to hear this every December for the rest of our lives whether we want to or not. The only thing that gets me through it is that I imagine that the kid is a grifter who immediately runs out to the car where is chain-smoking, but otherwise healthy, mother is waiting and she instructs him to go back into the store and return the shoes for a cash refund. And then on to the next store.

Calvin - I don't remember that song at all!

And I still have never heard Christmas Shoes. Yay for me!

My votes would be for:

It's Getting Hot in Here - Nelly (when it is sung to you by an 8 year-old girl, you can never recover from that)
Cherish - The Association (how bad was American pop culture that this song was a hit?)
This Old Man - Folksong (possibly the creepiest song ever taught to children)
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian

I"m going to add "EMPIRE STATE OF MIND" to the mix. Inoffensive the first time I heard it, growing in pain-in-the-eardrumosit with each use, its use to accompany every single goddamn image of NYC on TV is going to drive me mad.

Many fine nominees here but I've always reserved a special spot in my 'trapped in Hell' setlist for Billy Joel's 'Uptown Girl.'
