re: Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

During my first show, "Little Shop of Horrors"...

Two dancers left the theatre in the middle of a performance on the second to last night of the run. They went to Starbucks, came back and found the only available door locked. They had to call their friends who were still in the theatre to let them in, and somehow the word got back to our director, who promptly fired them both.

And this was after numerous talks about how you never, ever leave the theatre during a performance.

This isn't as unprofessional as it is funny. We did The Outsiders for our fall play this year and during the previews for the school we started several minutes late and the bell was going to ring. We had to cut it short and no one in the scene we were doing at the moment knew so when Bob was killed he was forced to walk off stage and the guy who played Johnny (an awesome actor) kept talking and everyone could hear him, even though the mic's were off. At least all the actor's learnt how to keep good volume should the mic's break. =]

Edit** How could I have forgotten this? I saw Mame at the Buck's County Playhouse and Mame was played by Linda Dano who is the most unprofessional performer I have ever seen. She didn't know her choreography, or lines...or songs. She was kicking the wrong way during a can-can and messed up a scene and TOLD THE OTHER ACTRESS TO DO IT OVER. They were onstage and the two of them desided to fix it! Ugh, how bad is that?

A most ingenious paradox.

re: Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

In my high school production of 'Once Upon a Mattress', there was a scene where pretty much all of the extras were carrying mattresses around in preperation for the final test. The way it was set up, they mattress-carriers would walk behind a set of a house with a large window, so you could see them going back and forth. Two boys apparently forgot that the audience was watching them, and started hitting each other with the mattresses (they were more like large cushions). Eventually, more people got involved, and the whole set fell over.

There was a time where I was unprofessional I guess.. I had just a little bit of time before I had to go onto stage, and I really had to take a leak... soooo... I stepped outside the theater backstage door (it is an outdoor theater), and I went on a bush wight before I had to go on! oh well..

We did CInderella last year, and while the curtain was closed, the queen and the butler were "crab fighting" so of course, we meeble ensemble members joined in..then the curtain started to open..we almost didnt make it to our spots, but hey..we got talent..

When we did wait until dark in the fall, the guy playing Mike was always late for his cues and forgot his props everytime. We even had to start rehersals an hour late because he didnt show up and was at starbucks or jack in the box i forget. Our director was so mad that he got on stage when Mike forgot his box, found the box, and threw it right past Mikes face into the wall of the set. Mike was the worst actor to ever work with.

I saw a performance of Anything Goes over the summer that had some of my friends in it (it was the two-week session after my session at the camp) and I must say, Moonie was...not that great or professional. He obviously had a cold or something, because he kept turning around to face the backdrop and coughing, and when he had to cough during his lines, he'd say, "'Scuse me" and then cough. I understand that he was sick, but there has to be ways to make it less obvious.

professionally: a performance of "threepenny opera" at theatre three in dallas, a husband and wife acting couple were having sex in costume and makeup during the show in the trap door tunnel onstage where mack had to make his entrance.

educational: not "unprofessional" but during a college production of "bye bye birdie" the mr. mcaffee changed his blcoking during "one last kiss" which resulted in him smacking kim in the face and knocking her out cold for the rest of the show.

I did Fiddler on the Roof my sophmore year of high school. I was Grandma Tzietel but I was also in the ensemble. So one of the girls was pissed off she didn't get a part in the show so she would push me out of line during 'Tradition'. Not only was it unprofessional it was really catty.

I also hate it in every show when people talk offstage while the performance is going on.

Oh man, how could I have forgotten this one...

The female lead of HONK a few months ago got into a rather large arguement with the director and decided not to come the next day. (Even telling her "I'm not going to be here". The director probably thought she was joking.) Sure enough, she kept her word and nearly did not come the next day, which was indeed AWARDS night (When the awards people come to view the show). Luckily, we pretty much forced her to come but that was just an incredibly selfish move on her part.

Community theater drives me nuts!! Last year in august I was casr in David Ives "lives of the saints." It's a series of one act plays in which 5 actors rotated parts in multipul plays. we had a cast member who enjoyed changing lines on show nights just to see if we could recover from him not hitting out cue lines. Also all the girls doing the play were sexually harrassed during the three weekend run, everyday. The direcotrs wanted to replace him after opening weekend, because he just really pissed everyone off. Also during one of our rehersals he got up and left, just left. he told the director that staying that late at night was wasting HIS time (we were the ones having to wait for him to stumble through lines and not remember his blocking in ANY of his scenes).

During cinderella, when not onstage the freshman contnually chased eachother around backstage even making horrid noises right by our drop mics.

Funny: during our one act rehersals my senior year one of the gells caught on fire during a scene. My friend travis runs onstage and yells pointing up to the lights, "Number 18 is burning!" Then walked off stage like nothing happend.

Another funny thing also rude audience member:
During Lives of the Saints, one of the lines at the end of a play is "anyone for sex?" And everyone yells "hurahhh" and dives under a giant rug. Well a lady in the front row jumped up and yelled "OH MY GOD!" and stormed out of the theater, demanding her money back. David Ives isn't for everyone, which is why people should look into the show BEFORE they go and see it, as about 15 people walked out over our run. Most of them just niclt waited for intermission and said "it's not for us" others ran out in the middle cursing and yelling... hmmmm.

Well i've taken up enough room!

re: Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

I am guilty of being unprofessional.

I dont know if anyone else does this, but my friends have this thing where whenever someone is in a show, the friends who come to see a show write a list right before the show and give it to the stage manager to give to the person in the show.. and the list has things to do while on stage.. like, pretend to pick a pennie up from the stage.. come on stage with your shoes on the wrong feet and fix them on stage. Do the mashed potato. You get the point. If the people coming know a bunch of people in the show, each person gets like 3 or 4 things to do.. unprofessional? yes. Waaaay fun? definately.

This guy got really mad at me during a scene for something I did and started yelling at me during the blackout in this tiny little ampitheatre so everyone heard. I was professional and didn't say anything until intermission, where we had it out at the make-up station.

And one year later we're now the happy couple...

I've also been unprofessional. This past year I was in BATB and I was a wolf. We had a dance at the begining of the second act, but when the curtian was closed the band would play the overture while we were still onstage. Each night we would do all this crazy dancing to the overture we called it "getting our wolf on." Well one night the curtain opened earlier than usual so we were dancing with the curtain open. Needless to say we got yelled at by the director.

I was in WSS at a local theater where I live a couple years ago, and for the last 2 performances of our run my partner didn't come because of his job. Well HE didn't tell me and my Director didn't tell me either. I found out my partner wasn't there 10 sec. before I went on. I do have to say that that really got me upset.

re: Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

Here are some middle school stories.

I was in Little Women (playing Beth), so I had to die onstage. We got a bed for me to die on, which was kept backstage until the death scene. Even though they were told repeatedly not to, a group of sixth and seventh grade girls sat on the bed during the first part. When it was time to go get the bed onstage, I politely asked them to get up so that the crew could lift it, and they refused. One of them even told me to go away. I practically strangled them. Luckily the crew told them to get the f**k up, so they did, and everything was great from there.

My school did "Emma" a few years ago, and one time, the girl playing Mrs. Elton and the boy playing Mr. Knightley were making out in the girl's bathroom during rehearsal. It was quite a shock for me when I entered the bathroom, and they were on top of eachother.

I don't really consider it unprofessional, but I had a bad cold and sore throat on the night when I was playing Maria in The Sound of Music. In one of my quick scene changes, a crew member shoved a huge cough drop in my mouth. I really didn't have anywhere to put it and I wasn't going to suck on it onstage, so I took an ensemble member's water bottle and spit it in there.
And then, do you know Monseiur Marius, I believe I was a little in love with you.

re: Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

During a show (I forget which) in high school, our set was grand. Actors would cross to the other side of the stage in FRONT, hiding behind the set and crawling and such. It was a game to see who could do it the fastest and not be seen.

Another time, during a show, a guy was in drag for his final scene. He is supposed to change back into his "male" costume however someone purposefully took it and hid it. So he had to do his curtain call in drag. And then we had to do a cast meet & greet with middle & high schoolers afterwards.

My cousin was in a production of Guys & Dolls where in the sewer under the stage they setup a Playstation with a TV and played video games.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

re: Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

At curtian call my senior year of high school, the whole cast was on stage. It was the last night of the show where everyone gets emotional, expecially the seniors, and give gifts or flowers to the directors. Well, we were having a serious moment and suddenly, some idiot guys from the tech. crew decided to throw water ballons at us. A vast majority of the cast was in rental costumes, p.o.'ed.

re: Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

my freshman year we did "Godspell" Our stage was on a rake at about 25 degrees, we had a cross inlayed to the rake, during the crucifixion cables would come down and the cast would hook the cross up. I would fly up about fifteen feet above the stage. Well, i walked into the theater on the day of the final performance and our set designer was bolting the cross together, he told me that the cross had been used about fifteen times being held together by a couple of screws, and that they had forgot to bolt it together... thus, my faith in our set designers diminished.

also, i have seen people pretty much having sex backstage before.

re: Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

My freshman year we did Guys and Dolls. Sky was a nice guy and professional enough usually...but he would like...make out with his girlfriend (who was in the ensemble) backstage literally seconds before he walked onstage to make out with Sarah Brown. That's unprofessional I guess, but mostly just gross. Also one night he was like...entertaining people by doing the robot backstage before one of his cues. I walked right by him and was about to tell him to make sure he got onstage soon, but I was only a freshman and I was SURE he knew. Well, he missed his cue, which was to come into the mission when the general is there, so there's this loooong pause onstage that's really awkward, and then you see Sky running past all the windows in the mission and barging in the door and saying "I couldn't help overhearing..." It was terrible.

Also, in 42nd Street Billy Lawlor got REALLY drunk after one performance and then we had an afternoon performance the next day...It was an interesting show.

I was in CATS and Aladdin Jr. (for the kiddies) last summer at Seaside Music Theater and the show Royal Family was also in the season. One of the cast members in Royal Family and Aladdin was horrible. Other than talking back to the director for Aladdin during notes, I heard of a day he wasn't feeling well during the day of one of the Royal Fam shows. He walked into the theatre, signed in on the call board, and then LEFT and didn't tell ANYONE. They had to put someone else on at last minute when they found out he wasn't there.
