Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

We were doing guys and dolls and Harry the Horse took it upon him self to get drunk before the show.

So he came in and then took it upon him self to start herassing "Sarah" (who just like the character is the sweetest girl in the world)-he was calling her lots of stuff that she wasnt and during the show he was in the wings he was still herassing her--so during intermission-she grabbed her car keys---walked to her car-got in it...got out with a pair of scissors and gave Harry's truck a nice line all the way around it.

funny thing is-he was to drunk to remember how or who did it the next day

A few weeks ago, I finished doing Oklahoma at my school (I was Aunt Eller). Anyway, during Kansas City, this kid yells out "TELL US MORE!" and "WHAT NEXT!" after EVERY SINGLE line. You could barely hear what Will was saying because of him. I thought the director was gonna strangle him...

(Same show) Right after Farmer and the Cowman, I had to dance on stage with 'Curly'. Obviously, since I'm dancing, I counldn't look down at the floor to see if anything was in my way. The same kid that yelled out put a bench right in the middle of the stage (where Curly and I were dancing), and we tripped over it. The kid had to sit backstage with the choreographer the rest of teh show to make sure he didn't mess anything up.

I watched the tape, and it was pretty funny actually...but still...

Also, I had a huge bag of pretzels backstage that the cast ate when we weren't on. I know, pretty unprofessional, nut still fun.

The same exact thing happened during the final show of The Pied Piper. We brought them onstage, though.

(Well, it was just me and the guy playing the mayor - apparantly it worked for me, since I was playing a redneck old lady whose main concerns in life are food and good TV, and during the show I also consumed two string cheeses, a tomato, and a hunk of cauliflower - but you couldn't hear a word the mayor said. It was riduclously unprofessional.)

During a performance of Peter Pan I was in (I was Mrs. Darling so I had a veryyyyyyy long break between my scenes) me and my friend got really really hungry in the middle of a show. So, she called her dad and the two of us figured out a way for him to get Wendy's burgers, fries, and frosties to us without being caught by the stagehands. We spent the rest of the show just eating and talking and nearly missed our cues to get back on stage.

Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

My high school's theater program is the absolute DEFINITION of unprofessional. Which is why I don't participate in anything they do anymore.
Here's just a few classic stories from my huge library of unprofessional moments I've seen.

The school's improv team, which was pretty much just another branch of our theater "program," was invited to do a show with another school's improv team. I was the only person on time before the show. Our team's manager and the rest of the team came strolling in AN HOUR LATE, having already missed the entire warm-up routine and the basic pre-show preparation stuff. The whole show started late because of them. When I told the manager that it was rude of him to show up late and nearly ruin the other school's show, he was just like "Um, that's nice. I don't really care. They're lucky we showed up at all."
Then later that night during intermission, the manager and the coach got in a huge fight backstage while the other school's team just looked on in shock. And then our manager and the rest of the team insulted the other school and refused to go to the cast afterparty. The whole night was just humiliating.

Another time during a big improv show, I came on stage and tried to say something, but these two boys on the stage kept talking over me and wouldn't let me speak at all. I stood on the side of the stage awkwardly, not really sure of what to do. Eventually I just walked off, because they were being so damn rude and I felt stupid just standing there, being ignored in front of a huge audience.

And then there was the most humiliating performance of my life. We were supposed to be presenting short monologue/short one act scenes. We had about a month to do these scenes. Well, there was not one person in this performance who was well-prepared, except me. I'd gone through immense problems getting the people in my scene together, forcing them to memorize their lines, and memorizing my own two-page long monologue. So performance time comes. And one of the boys who is supposed to be in my scene is NOT THERE. He called in 15 minutes before showtime to announce that he "can't make it tonight." I had to rush to find a last minute replacement, who was a GIRL, even though the character was an OLD MAN. So of course she had to go on reading her script, and then I had to find another girl to replace the part that this other girl was originally supposed to play. THEN the boy who was originally supposed to be in it shows up AFTER the scene, and says "So when do we go on?" I threw a fit. I was PISSED.
The whole show was a horrible disaster. In every other scene, people were going onstage reading FROM THEIR SCRIPTS. No one had bothered to memorize their lines. Maybe 4 other cast members didn't show up that night. So guess who had to learn their lines 5 minutes before showtime and take their places? ME.
After the show, an old woman came up to me and asked why no one had memorized their lines, and yelled at me about how the whole performance had been unprofessional. She apparently was insulted that we would even put on a show like that thinking that the audience would like it.
Yeah. Like it was my fault that the show sucked.

There are SO many other stories I could tell about my school.
Maybe I'll put up more later.

Wow, sorry that was so long!

Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

lol Alright, here come some more tales of horror!

This one's from auditions for one of the school plays. The director, who is completely incompetent, apparently forgot to reserve the theater that day after school to use for auditions. So because the chorus was in the theater, we had to conduct auditions in a classroom, and all the people waiting to audition had to sit out in the hallway. Now this wouldn't have been a huge problem if it wasn't the middle of December and it wasn't the coldest day of the year. We were all literally freezing our asses off. And then it started raining. Yeah. That was fun. So then the director, instead of having us do individual monologues, made us organize ourselves into groups of about 3 or 4 and do cold-readings of scenes together, which was just GREAT, because these people had NO idea what they were doing, and the people in my group just screwed up the entire audition! Not to mention that the scripts we were reading from had been photocopied and half of the words had been cut off!!! We pretty much just had to make up lines to fill in the blanks. THEN the director had the BRILLIANT idea to let the other auditions sit in and WATCH the auditions and JUDGE THEM.
I really don't think that's allowed! You can't have other students sitting around judging people's auditions! Of course they're all going to be rude and say you suck, because obviously they are all going for the same part as you!
Needless to say, that was not a pleasant audition.

This one's not from a performance, but it was at one of our theater fundraiser events. My friend and I got to the theater for the Drama Movie Night, and no one else was there yet except the drama teacher, the same moron who I mentioned before. So I said "What time is the movie starting?" To which the teacher replies "Um, well, it might not be. See, I didn't bring a dvd player. I guess I just thought it would play somehow. I didn't even think to bring a dvd player!"
Unbelievable.
That fundraiser ended up cancelled.

And then there's my school's highly unethical method of choosing cast members. The director pretty much just casts based on who her favorite students are. How good your audition is really has nothing to do with it. She's one of those obnoxious people who thinks she's still a teenager and tries to be friends with her students, so she just picks the people who are her "friends." For the very last show I auditioned for there, I didn't get picked for one of the twentysomething roles, even though I easily could have been picked as an understudy or something, since she had some people doubling as two understudies and things like that.
You know WHY I didn't get to be in the play? The director told me that because I'm such a dedicated, hard worker, she wanted me to handle pretty much ALL the crew responsibilities, because she knew I'd be willing to do that much work.
I didn't get in because she pretty much wanted to take advantage of my dedication and pretty much make me do tons of labor.
I quit that production pretty fast.

Sooooo many stories. SOOOOOO many.

Oh god, don't even get me STARTED on their one-acts, which I didn't take part in. They were given 6 weeks to put together a simple one-act, and these kids were FREAKING OUT. It was just awful. I've never HEARD so much whining! This one girl complained to me every day about how 6 weeks was just not enough for a 10-minute play. I was like, deal with it. You had more than enough time! And then she just kept complaining about how her cast was out of control, and one day before the show she started complaining that no one knew their lines. When I told her that it was kind of her own fault, since she was directing and she let the cast slack off, she got so mad. I mean, seriously. I didn't know a 10-minute one act could cause SUCH pandemonium.

I could just go on. I have too many stories of humiliation from all my improv theater shows.

Yeah, everything associated with our program is awful! lol I can't wait to graduate and get into some decent college theater programs! Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance? Next year I have to spend every day with this horrible director, because my counselor forced me into the theater class. That should be fun. Not.

There have been so many catfights backstage and at rehearsals for improv, I can't even describe them all! One time we had a coach from a professional troupe in L.A come to our rehearsal for a workshop, and my *wonderful* manager was in one of his typical bad moods, and decided to cuss me out in front of the coach, for no apparent reason. What a respectful guy, hmmm?
And he was pretty much known for starting arguments with people from other school's teams. Sometimes backstage about 5 minutes before a show, he'd decide that it was the appropriate time to insult them, call them names, exclude them from warm-ups, ect.

Oh, I once sprained my leg and couldn't even walk, but instead of putting on one of the many other available team members that night, I had to limp my way through the show. Scenes where I had to be extremely energetic sure were fun that night. I'm sure the audience thought it was a real treat to watch me hobble about the stage in pain! lol
Ah, and there was the wonderful time when we were doing another show at another school, and the teams weren't speaking to each other. So no one told me the show was starting. I'd just come out from changing into my team uniform, and then this girl came up to me and literally pushed me out onto the stage. I then realized that I was starting the show. It's pretty terrifying to suddenly be shoved through a door and find yourself in front of about a hundred people when you're not expecting it at all and you're completely unprepared!
Ahhhh. Good times.

Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

There was a freshman boy my high school's production of Annie Get Your Gun who is not a very strong actor (I'm not going to tell his real name, so I'll just call him 'Adam'). He was originally given the role of Foster Wilson, but was such a terrible actor, the role was given to a senior, who deserved that role in the first place. He was demoted to the role of the porter during the train scene. This boy also never came in on cue. I was playing Annie, and he was supposed to interrupt Frank and mine's kiss. Once during rehearsal, he didn't come on. The director stopped rehearsal and yelled, "Where is Adam?!" Some chorus members searched around for him and he was in the dressing room. After our scene was done, I spoke to him in a harsh tone; it wasn't the first time he had missed a cue like this.

But I don't think he's the unproffesional one:

While the men were singing "My Defenses Are Down" the girl playing Dolly said to me, "You know, when you spoke with Adam, he starting bawling like a baby and called you a bitch." I was shocked. I started crying and was in a horrible mood the entire rehearsal.

And here it comes:

After rehearsal I told him how sorry I was. He said it was fine. I replied saying, "No really... Dolly told me you were crying..." He said, "... uh, why would she tell you that? I didn't cry. Yeah, I was pissed, but I didn't cry."

Why would she tell me that?! I still don't understand. I never want to do another show again.

This doesn't really concern me but it's so awful I have to post it here. Okay. My friend and I went to see Sweeney Todd at her school. It was a high school performance. Well, for most of the show, you could hear these two stage hands talking backstage. Right before Green Finch and Linnet Bird, Johanna takes the birdcage, HURLS it to the ground, and yells out, "Goddamn it, if you two don't shut up I'll come back there and f*cking kill you!" My God. Guess somebody was upset they didn't get Mrs. Lovett! Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

I saw a production of Jekyll and Hyde few months ago, and during "Murder, Murder" the newsboy (played by a girl) missed her entrance. The orchestra played those chords again. She tried to sing, but completely forgot her lyrics. The orchestra finally played the chords again, and she sang a different lyrics, but luckily the show kept on going.

At the end, apparently there were supposed to be three gunshots. (Jekyll falls on the last one) But somehow, only two went off. It was awkward. Jekyll tried to move and grunt, but gave up and fell. Most awkward thing ever.

Alright, I'm part of the pit orchestra normally (but I may try my hand at the "on stage" portion later this year), so nobody ever sees what we do.

We would play Mario Party during the show. I lost every time. We actually moved the Oboe player so that we could fit an air purifier, refrigerator, and tv in her spot.

Those were good times. Oh, and the orchestra has never sounded as good as it did that year.

During Antigone last year, I was the Greek Chorus. I had to break the news to Creon that his wife has killed herself, and the kid playing Creon could not keep a straight face. We always had these strange, stretched-out looking expressions from trying not to laugh about his dead queen. It was awful.

Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

In my final module of my first year, we were split into groups and we had to create fifteen minute devised productions. One of the guys in one of the groups is constantly stoned and he stunk of weed whenever he came into the dressing room. When he was on stage performing, he called his wife 'Helen' when her name was 'Maggie' and he whispered to her on stage "What's my next line, I can't remember it."
Everything in life...is only for now.

At a recent performance of Footloose at my community theatre, one of Chuck's guys decided that during Act Two he would go across the street to a restaurant and get ice cream and a burger. This same actor decided that, on opening night, he would leave town without notifying our director. Every scene he was in and "The Girl Gets Around" had to be reworked that night. It was quite stressful. Needless to say, he was not the cast's favorite person by the end.

Not a performance, but the other night in rehearsal, Robin Hood was pushed down the Sheriff of Nottingham and he fell. He had a huge box of nerds cansy in his pocket, and as he hit the ground, all the tiny little candies spilled a cross the entire stage. It was pretty funny...and we are still finding Nerds everywhere.

A kid who led our crew used to bring a George Foreman and cook burgers for the pit and crew every night. And then he'd only give burgers to me and 2 other actors because everyone else at my school blames everything that goes wrong on the crew which is BS. George-Foreman-Kid graduated last year though but this year we might get a waffle iron.....

Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

We had football players in our Dance Concert last year (horrible idea...it inflated their egos more then I've ever seen). So, here's a number of examples:

- Using the monitor backstage that was needed to watch the show and not miss cues, they brought a PS2 and plugged it in and played it during the show.

- One of them decided to miss a performance due to a Volleyball game (major jock) and the director decided that he could without any penalties. If it had been anyone else, they would have been kicked out so fast...

- After every show, they would do this stupid rap thing in the dressing room (that opened right into the family/friends waiting to see us) and everyone would hear them while we were supposed to be changing and leaving.

It was a miserable experience and completely embarassing for us guys who actually care about this concert every year. (Not to mention the choreographer decided to take us dancer guys out of the numbers and have these football players just walk across the stage when we could have done some really awesome choreography...I was just a little bitter.)

Most Unprofessional Thing You've Ever Witnessed During a Performance?

Yay this one is interesting and I love it! I wouldn't really consider it unprofessional except by the Director's actions toward me in some performances.. I'm a newly actress, well going in that direction so this is all from my techie experiences and a few acting..

Elementary school..

I was called on stage at a random thing so it was on the sight playing, and it was me and this other kid named Matthew Littlejohn.. We were supposed to throw a character off stage, but I froze and didn't want to throw him off stage because it was FAR to the ground so I just threw his turtle mask off stage, though it was a professional and they would have been able to handle the fall I was mordified because I didn't want to hurt someone!

I don't remember what the name of the play was but I was a cat, and I had made my own costume out of my Gymnastics outfits with my leotard, tights, stockings.. Well my line was simple and I still remember it because I was a lead.. It was "And the cat goes meow meow fiddle iiii feeee." Well after every time I did that of course I had to act like a cat which I did perfectly yet... I would always take the sturups from my tights and walk in them instead of keeping my shoes on... One of the kids who gave me so much crap all my life told me I should take off my tights! I didn't though... It was just annoying..

Fifth grade play... I was in a cardboard canoe as an indian and we were supposed to go through the water because it was the 'Louis and Clark' scene and the funny thing is those who were making the waves go forgot we had to come through them so they basically made it look like an indian was cut off at the stomach randomly going through water.

May/June 2006 Mass Appeal

First off I was supposed to go to a Dreamgirls production meeting, but I went to the theatre the night before I got the dates mixed up and I asked for the director of the performance, but this director [we will call her 'Sussie']was like "Oh well, you missed them your coming with us.." I didn't really have a say in it so all I could do was nodd. I went into the rehersals and bloody hell the SM was unprepared, she was always late with getting the props out. Because this was a black box production I was given three roles.. The tech booth was upstairs overlooking the black box.. Right before opening I would have to do the pre-show music which was no problem. Their sound system sucked. I had to switch cds in the middle of my work, run downstairs [no ghost lights, nor other lights were allowed to be on so I was running down stairs and fell.] run behind the stage, open the door QUIETLY go behind the scenery, get the props, and follow the SM because with it I was the ASM, Props, Sound. After we did that, she never got her spike marks. I had to fix it with a desk all by myself, I exited and ran back upstairs hoping to make it in time to change the cd into bells instead of scene changing music. By the second night I did everything without shoes so I didn't make as much noise. Opening night they forced me to go to the cast party, I was 20 at the time, and everyone else was over the age of 30 and balding even my director! The whole run of the show was horrible.

June/July Dream Girls 2006

The day after all of that I was on top of everything doing a production back to back. I was sick already and so the SM was very nice about it and understanding.. During Mass Appeal at nights I had Dream Girls rehersals during the day so I was at the theatre from 7am - 11pm and barely able to go home.. Well with this one the props designer totally flucked the mics up and made them look all sparkly instead of the wireless ones.. During the run of the show the sound board the old skool kind kept going out on me so I would switch over to lights while the lighting person fixed the sound board.. Closing night we were recording, and being techies we were always putting puns to everything so the ASM would bring stuff up and try to make a joke out of it. During one part I had to run through the prop room downstairs to the ASM to have him do something for us.. The night we were filmming, we were singing rather loudly and the door swung open.

Barefoot In the Park August 2006 -

I got rather sick during this and the director wouldn't let me have something to drink so I wouldn't die coughing, though I was in the tech booth and the day I didn't show up because I had a high fever of 102 she fired me though I wasn't being paid and I went all out on her saying I was glad because the acting sucked and it was a horrible show. Because it was.

Alice in Wonderland June 2007

Pretty much got hired on the spot at the last moment because they didn't have a props person and so it was me.. Having never made props except for some up at school in 2004 for 'Once Upon a Mattress' I didn't have experience in what she wanted so I winged it as much as possible. I was up for days upon end trying to improve the props each time. I took them by the theatre and I was told they were 'ok' but then I found actors through around my props, laughing at them and basically had me in tears.. Needless to say this director sucked because she REWROTE the whole play... It was horrible and I was taken for granted. Sure I got paid... But I never got paid for the props I had to buy. I had spent 150 dollars.

Treasure Island July 2007

Same theatre, pretty much a lot of the same actors, different director, but the director who directed Alice in Wonderland was in this production so I had gotten directions from two different people... The SM was horribly rude, saying I had a bad attitude and I never checked my spots.. She b**ched me out and said I needed to stop f*cking around or I was going to lose my job... I had done the props for this too, and I didn't know that 'mash' meant food so I didn't get food for the props... Well the director of the last one yelled at me and pretty much had me in tears a lot.. It was horrible because I was trying my hardest, and I was told I needed to get a smiling pirates flag.. I'm sorry pirate flags aren't smiling. SO I told her I would make one and this guy drew out a picture of what I should make it look like.. Me never being a good artist tried my hardest to do it and it turned out perfect except the director of last show didn't like it and said I was wrong in doing that when I was getting direction from two different directors one constantly changing her mind... The director of AIW rewrote Treasure Island too and it was HORRIBLE!!!!

The other one has been harrassing me about returning a prop back when I'm not one to say no, so I hadn't returned it and finally she came and picked it up from my house...

Needless to say I did have some fun with a lot of my teching, just not with Alice in Wonderland, Mass Appeal, or Treasure Island. I saw the SM from Treasure Island this past week who gave me a go to hell look and she was jealous of me because I was invited to the TUTS casting of Dreamgirls Cast party it was awesome...

During a production of The Royal Family at a very professional regional theatre, although I did't see it, the story definitely got around the season cast. A guy was the bellboy in the 3 act show and had 3 parts where he came onstage. Well...I guess he wasn't feeling well because he came in, signed in on the call sheet and then just LEFT without telling anyone.
