Not specifically. It's only part of a much bigger story.

The Sum Of Us is tarnished by starring Russell Crowe who is just plain awful and I can't bear him.

Hey, Matt! (it's me)

I agree with you about GET REAL; didn't care for it. Another film that got on my nerves which seems to be fairly popular here is ALL OVER THE GUY. I hated that film. I ranted about the film over at Netflix after renting it.

At the risk of alienating myself from those who liked the movie, here's what I had to say about it back when I first saw it (in case anyone is interested in what a newcomer here has to say about anything, feel free to ignore it):

I thought ALL OVER THE GUY started out on the right foot--the filmmakers seemed to realize that those of us who seek gay-themed entertainment have seen it all and are rather annoyed at the easy stereotypes of mainstream films that actually deign to deal with gay issues. (Early on in the film the two blind-daters have a brief heated conversation about the relative demerits of films like IN & OUT and THE BIRDCAGE.) But the way the characters in the film, particularly Eli's neurotic psychiatrist mother, harangue on about the unrealistic portrayal of gay protagonists in popular film I can only assume that the filmmakers, rather than meaning to provide any insightful commentary on Hollywood panderers, are actually making fun of the film's audience who have the nerve to expect something more and better.

Near the end of the film it looks like the film might redeem itself by showing us that relationships really are complex and people are not so easy to categorize. Can it be that a gay romantic comedy would actually challenge society's view of what constitutes a healthy and functional relationship? Can it be that we're finally to be told the truth: That one size does not fit all? No, no such luck. By the end we see that the only way that two men can be happy together is for them to mimic heterosexual married relationships as closely as possible. Middle-class morality and gay assimilationist politics win the day again.

If you're looking for a gay romantic comedy that does more than affirm American tribal myths, get out your camera and start shooting; that film hasn't been made yet.

Yeah, The Living End went somewhere new and hopefully, no other film would go there again. It was a place that could have been left unexplored. What made it new was that it was gays going there, but films with fatalist protagonists have been around a while.

And so have films with TERRIBLE actors.

That's why I find that movie HATEFUL!!!!

Didn't Araki direct the movie Splendor?

That I liked...kinda. Matt Keeslar and Jonathan Schaech had a really hot (but tame) kiss in it.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Both those boys are soooo hot, so any kind of kiss would be smouldering, tame or not.

Can't really say the overall effect was 'romantic,' but I really enjoyed Bedrooms and Hallways.

I love that movie too. Tom Hollander is a joy. Has anyone here seen The Lawless Heart? He's wonderful in that, too. And that movie is gorgeous.

Believe me, he'll fit in quite nicely here.

We always do. It's not like we're ever bitchy and spiteful, is it?

I love Trick - Tori Spelling is hysterical "I'm not a lesbian, I don't want to move to New Jersey, and where is the cheese on these god damned f***ing fries!!!"

for lesbian flicks - there aren't a lot of good ones out there - Rath is right...though I love the If These Walls Could Talk 2 segments - esp the one with Ellen Degeneres and Sharon Stone trying to have a baby - super cute and romantic.

Thanks, Matt. Now, don't everyone feel you have to be nice on my account. I can be just as antisocial as anyone else. I agree with Clairee from STEEL MAGNOLIAS, if you don't have anything nice to say about anyone, come sit by me.

For a different take on gay films, I enjoyed Urbania (also featuring Matt Keeslar).

Doesn't that have Dan Futterman in it?

GTP - I'm pulling up a seat. My momma told me if you can't dish the dirt, get out of the kitchen. Well, momma drank a lot.

I got all her best traits. Stop by my place and I'll mix you up a nice pitcher of "mommy's tonic for when the kids get home from school".

My mommy's tonic was a slap across the face and a big helping of "SHUT THE FU*K UP, MOMMY'S WATCHING HER STORIES!"

Kids - you should have had lunch at my house - mommy was too busy drinking tonic and watching stories to even know we were there. I had hours of uninterrupted time at her makeup table...

Back to ALL OVER THE GUY for a second.

I never knew so many folks saw the damned thing. It played non-stop on cable about a year and a half ago, and I kept landing on it. It certainly kept you watchin'-- but what was the point? I remember when one plot turn (!) involved the nerdier guy -- naturally, he's the one who was committment-oriented and forever yearning (and loved GONE WITH THE WIND, of course--not WOMEN IN LOVE) -- giving in, opting to bottom for the non-committed one--the shallow fella who kept saying "do the math." If you step back from it ... It's a movie about, uh Top Gun worship, so to speak, and Bottom Feeding, because the cold, indifferent behavior of the anti-relationship half of the story is very much romanticized. The cold "straight-acting" top is perceived to be the catch, and the less cute "fem" is so needy that you can't imagine getting through BRUNCH with him, let alone a relationship. Okay, it's been 18 months since I saw it, but this is my memory. Correct me, afficianados. It perpetuates more than a few intra-community myths. (Topic: Why can't the "needy" one ever be the catch--and, uh, maybe, the butcher of the two? Talk amongst yourselves.)
