I had mixed feelings on Moulin Rouge. I liked the songs and the visuals, but the story (or lack of one) bothered me. I didn't like that Satine was sick basically whenever the movie wanted her to be. It didn't really make sense to me that someone sick with consumption would be doing big production numbers every night. I think they could've had her die of something else.
One of the great movies of the past ten years. It will probably become a classic. Kidman, McGregor, and Broadbent are fantastic.
I hated every repugnant, repulsive, nauseating second of it. You're actually talking about how good some of the singing is?! Did I find Nicole "somewhat annoying"?????? No wonder musicals are so lousy today. Oh well, to each their own!
actually talking about how good some of the singing is?!
Who are you talking to?

I agree-Can't sit through it. The scene where Ewan is reading poetry and Nicole is pretending to get aroused just triggers something and I can't look at it anymore. It's like a series of cute ideas cobbled together with not much story.
It's horribly filmed. The camera doesn't stay still for more than 3 seconds. Musical numbers are poorly rendered, and the entire look and everyone in it, is grotesque. That there is nothing compelling about the "story", is the least of its problems.
Freak!

Ok, it wasn't the best story or anything. But it's romantic and has pretty people in it, so I enjoyed it.
I loved it when I first saw it, but I should also mention that I'd never been to a musical. After seeing about 20 musicals, I watched it again, and I wasn't nearly as impressed, especially with the music. What's so great about taking lyrics from popular songs and stringing them together. I'd have more of an appreciation for it, if all the music was original.
Ah, poor Babe. You found those people pretty? Ah...

Yes!!! Ya gotta admit CM, Ewan is pretty. Come on.....
I already said I found everyone grotesque. That doesn't mean pretty! Not a fan of the man. But if you find him pretty, then okay.
when i first saw it in the theatre, i was like "wtf" for the first 15 minutes. until they got to the "elephant love song" then i was hooked. it just clicked from there.
and, yes, both of them did their own singing.
I am a bit of a Moulin Rougue junkie..."a bit" meaning I used to watch it every single day...and still cry at the end....every time.
and I want Ewan.
Now.

They should have actually filmed the Green Fairy singing Olivia's "Physical" as was originally planned. I'm sure I would have enjoyed that bit.
cm2, you probably don't get it since you're australian.
I love this film. Love it. There, I said it. Love it.
I love it too. cried all three times in the theatre.
that being said. I definately understand the reasons for the haters of this film. it is different, definately, and Nicole kidman is annoying (not just in this film-thats kind of her character-that annoyingly attractive blonde chick.
anyway, just like Robb0 said, "it clicked" and either it clicked for you, or it didn't. it clicked for me. I love the BAz's style, the cinematography, the costumes and sets.
I like everything EXEPT for that scene that beerchild was talking about with the poetry scene. I understand the style and the joke it was going for, but a comedianne Nicole is not. I hate her in that scene. I just want to punch her in her face.
FU, RobbO. Funny, I wanted to punch the entire cast!
FU? i cannot find that on the map. is that next to FI?
Moulin R. is certainly frenetically paced and edited, but I did enjoy it. I am a big fan of Baz Luhrman's--'Strictly Ballroom' is on heavy rotation in my house--and Moulin Rouge is very much the logical outcome of giving Baz unlimited $$$ to make a film.
I certainly understand why musical theatre purists would find M.R. so offensive, in the same way that the professional dancers I know were totally put off by the film version of 'chicago', but taken on its own terms, I find it a crazy (in a good way) ride.
I love STRICTLY BALLROOM. It's a very entertaining film, and features Paul Mercurio's spectacular ass, in tight pants.
