It's odd how in NYC Matinee movies are the same price as night movies. In every other city they are usually a couple bux cheaper. I wonder if there is any reason for that here.
In Astoria, they have mat prices. However, on the weekend, it is only the first showing.

That's what you get for going to movies!
I hate 'em!
As long as people keep shelling out their hard earned money everytime the price goes up, it just emboldens the movie chains to keep jacking up prices. If enough people boycotted , prices would come down. The same goes for the concession area. The movie chains make their money charging $ 3.50 for popcorn that costs probably $ .10 cents to make. The inflated salaries of the actors & actresses plays a part. Kevin Costner has not had a hit in years & yet he is still being paid megabucks to star in a movie . Why ???
I go to a bargain matinee or my gray hair gets me in on a senior discount. My wife & I wait for the movies to come on pay per view.
When we do go, we sneak in food & buy cold sodas outside & bring them in.
You are right! LOL, I make a lot of popcorn in my home. I buy a large bag of unpopped corn, and it cost about $1.49. So a large bowl of it does cost around $.10, but remember that the movie theatres pay a lot less than $1.49 for the bag. They get it by the barrel at that price. However, the theatres don't make more than a few percent on the film. Around 90 percent of their money comes from concessions. Anyway, I don't like to go to movies either-not because I dont like them, but because I rarely think a movie is worth $10 or more, and if you go at night, it's usually not a pleasant experience. If I go at all, it's when the older folks are there, like the first showing, around noon! That's when I love it.

i miss the movie theatre on steinway, even though the new theatre is much nicer.
My thoughts are why spend fifteen bucks (with concessions) at the movies when I can go see a play or musical for 12 bucks? I've only seen one movie since the summer and someone else paid for it. I can usually wait until they come out on dvd.
In Astoria, where I grew up, there were once 4 theaters on Steinway Street.
There was a little shoebox called the Cameo off 25 th Avenue. Than came the Triboro which I & others fought like hell to save. You cannot fight city hall & it was demolished. Absolutely georgeous theater. It was 3100 seats with twinkling stars in the ceiling, a machine that simulated clouds & false trees all around. It gave you the feeling you were outside in a garden watching a movie with stars overhead. The grand foyer was massive. The closed Paradise (in the Bronx) foyer resembles it although done by different architects. This is part of the reason I am no longer voting being totally disgusted by politics.
Next came the Astoria. It was quaded & than became a sixplex & than it closed. Lastly was the Steinway. It closed years ago to become a Lerners shop ( with the theater hid behind false ceilings). It is now a sporting goods store. I remember nothing of it. All done in by progress & changing tastes.

"I can understand someone having an affinity for the stage, but movies are such garbage."

I agree about he musical thing. I have a hard time spending $10 for a movie when I know I can get a student or rush Broadway ticket for $20-25.
