The good news is that "Pocahontas" is being released in the states on July 3rd...the bad news is it's a 2 movie collection with it's cheap direct to video sequel "Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World" on the same disc, and lacking most of the extras on the DVD edition that was last released. I could live with the cheapquel being on there too, but not in place of actual extras for the first movie. The worst part of the upcoming release is that it doesn't include the extended version with "If I Never Knew You" animated back into the film (You can only watch the song as a deleted scene extra). I think the original theatrical version should ALWAYS be available, but this was one case where the extended version was actually enhanced by putting the song back in and it sucks that both versions of the first film are not there, and all that space on the disc is used up by a crappy sequel I won't ever watch again.

Criterion released Evita and Carrie as laserdisc special editions with extras. I have both, but I want them on BD. I've emailed them several times and they've never responded.

"I'd like to see the Maysle's Grey Gardens and The Beales of Grey Gardens released on Criterion BD."

There was an e-mail hint about this happening, in one of Criterion's e-mail blasts a few months back.

That confuses me about Pocahontas--isn't one of the advantages of blu ray that with branching options it's all the easier to have the option to include If I Ever Knew You in the main film or as a special...

I know Criterion often loses the rights to their films after a few years--I assume they never had them for Carrie or Evita as DVDs, which is too bad.

Disney is on a huge kick with the whole 2 movie collection thing. Moms are buying them like crazy (Hey, anything to get the kids off their backs for an extra 90 minutes), so they have a slew of them coming out this year. "The Rescuers/The Rescuers Down Under" "Sister Act 1 & 2", "Princess Diaries 1 & 2" .... so I think for the next few years all the classics that had DTV sequels will be packaged together, regardless of quality.

I think the only reason they didn't include the extended edition of Pocahontas is so that they can market a rerelease in a few years as being "The first time on Blu-Ray" double dipping crap.

Not that it's really a great masterpiece or anything, but I would love a good Blu ray transfer of The Witches. The DVD release is completely bare bones, and nothing to write home about in terms of the quality of the picture and sound.

It wa a favorite book of mine growing up, and is a fairly faithful adaptation (except for the ending) with some delightful work from the Jim Henson Creature Shop in creating the Grand High Witch (portrayed wonderfully by Angelica Huston)

Evita is being released on blu ray June 19th. It comes with a few special features, Making of the film, you must love me music video, etc....

I am anxiously awaiting details on the "Little Shop of Horrors" Blu-ray rumored to be out this October. I've heard Warner MIGHT include the original ending in color as an extra (some are saying seamless branching, but I think that's wishful thinking), Frank Oz has said he's heard about it, but that he is not involved with the release at all, as of now.

The EVITA blu-ray says "Making Of Featurette"-that doesnt sound like the 45 minute doc from the laserdisc.

Criterion announced that one of my favorite movies, David Fincher's THE GAME will be released on BD on 9/25/12. I'm SOOOOOO EXCITED!!! Criterion announced that one of my favorite movies, David Fincher's THE GAME will be released on BD on 9/25/12.

I saw that movie three times opening weekend. When the film was released, my mother met Fincher's mother at a writing conference. I was like, "SCHMOOZE, WOMAN!! SCHMOOZE FOR ALL YOU'RE WORTH!!"

The Game deserved Oscar noms for Picture, Director and Screenplay. I still don't know what all the hoopla for L.A. Confidential was about that year. Other than Basinger's notable "return" to Hollywood respect, I really didn't see anything special about it.

While we're on the subject have you guys seen this database? An astonishingly complete list of BDs and you can search using multiple criteria options. Call me behind the times but I just now stumbled upon it.

Mister Matt---It's funny you mention "Sense & Sensibility."

I worked on the menu designs and interactive for the Blu-ray release of this title!

That was FOUR years ago. Our work was approved and delivered to Sony and the authoring house. Then the title went "on hold," presumably due to transfer issues, but Marketing puts a title on hold for any number of reasons, sometimes to do with a strategic release date tying in with other events or movies, etc.

In any case, four years have passed since I worked on it, and it has yet to be released.
