Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care.

Wow. Really Mike? I know a lot of people who were raised by single mothers or parents who aren't married and they are just fine. He'd lay a brick in Sweden. More often than not, baby comes first here. Of the 8 new baby photos in a news paper this week, only two had parents who were married. My teacher and her sambo (means same as in Swedish and applies to those living together) have two children and are expecting a third. Marriage may come later or it may not. People are very happy just cohabiting. They share the same rights as married couples here, so why get married unless it's something that's important to you both?

It seems to me in the US that many people get married BECAUSE of a baby, and that rarely works out. If you took away all reasons for marriage except deep, emotional, can't-live-without-you love, how many would be left? People get married because they are pregnant, because they are scared of ending up alone, for insurance purposes, for tax breaks, because they think it's expected of them, because they are devout in their faith and their hormones are in overload... The list goes on and on. We HAVE to get away from the attitude that a woman should absolutely marry her baby daddy or she's trash. Sometimes marriage isn't right.

And as a chubby chich I feel bad that I would even think it, but it must be said. If Huckabee is so concerned with the children of single mother's starving, maybe he should share some of whatever he's feeding his family.

Medved is/was a film critic who took a hard right turn and basically is a conservative mouthpiece about all things 'Hollyweird'.

So Huckabee rips a grown woman who is planning on marrying the father of her child, actually has some disposable income, who graduated from Harvard, and never had some 'bad girl' reputation but he says this about Jamie Lynn Spears:

"It's a tragedy when a 16-year-old who is not really prepared for all the responsibilities of adult life is going to be now faced with all the responsibilities of honest-to-goodness adult life. I respect it...Apparently, she's going to have the child and I think that is the right decision, a good decision, and I respect that and appreciate it. I hope it is not an encouragement to other 16-year-olds who think that is the best course of action. But at the same time I'm not going to condemn her. There'll be plenty of people in line to do that and I always look for the shortest lines.

I just hope that she will make another right decision and that's to give that child all the love and kindness and care that she can."

So it is only okay when the women in question is a poor, helpless, young, stupid little girl who kinda did ruin her life?

Yes, everyone has help and support.

But the situation you just described is not exactly the same as riding your mother's coattails to a berth on "Dancing with the [in the loosest sense of the word] Stars."

I suppose that's possibly true. But Portman was having a career before Nichols got involved.

But at any rate, I don't know that we can characterize Nichols's support as unconditional; certainly it's nothing like Sarah Palin's thrusting her daughter into our consciousness.

And since you were replying to supportivemom, who WAS comparing NP to BP, I imagine you can see how I thought you were comparing them.
