Okay don't laugh but when I was living in Italy in the early 90s I got homesick and really depressed. I heard Diana Ross' version of "Home" her interpretation and the lyrics got to me and It had me bawling like a baby. Now everytime I hear that song it moves me.

Check out Donny's versions of "For All We Know" (with Roberta Flack on piano) and the two of them duetting on "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling" -- you'll get goosebumps.

And while I'm going on and on --

Labelle -- "Isn't It a Shame"
Rufus and Chaka Khan -- "Sweet Thing"
Aretha -- um....... about four dozen recordings.
Jao Gilberto -- anything Jobim that he recorded
Sarah Vaughan -- "Midnight Sun" and the entire "How Long Has This Been Going On?" album with Joe Pass on Pablo
Miles Davis -- SO many, but especially Sketches of Spain and Quiet Nights
John Coltrane -- the album with Duke Ellington and "Naima" from Giant Steps and "Soul Eyes" from Coltrane on Impulse

Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante defunte," either in the original piano or in the orchestration, is a perfect little, miniature, maudlin masterpiece.

If you're going for Broadway, Ray Bolger and Eileen Herlie singing "Once Upon a Time" from Strouse and Adams's "All American" is a reliable choke-me-up.

Hathaway/Flack is about as good as it gets.

And Margo, it just made me really smile that you mentioned k.d.

Nina's "I Loves You Porgy" has an effect on me.

Simply because she usually sounds like she's on the verge of collapse, some of Connie Francis' recordings get to me.

And if you hear laughter about "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," it won't be coming from MY corner of the room. It's one of my favorites - and I particularly like the live duet with Sir John and George Michael.

Now...I am actually not a huge fan of most of Idina's solo stuff, but "Heart on My Sleeve" is an amazing song that always moves me. Maybe just cuz I can relate.

I have a whole plan that I am going to propose to that song in an empty ballroom with a spotlight in the center of the dancefloor...gah. I'm a closeted hopeless romantic, but don't tell my friends. They think I am bitter cynic.

Ah, Margo, I love Maria Callas in La Traviata.

One classical piece that really moves me is Dvorjak's New World Symphony. I had the opportunity to play it at Ravinia, and it was just an amazing experience.

"For Good"- I lost my friend this year(we're actually forbidden to speak), and that song is EXACTLY how we were.

"Finale/Somewhere"-West Side Story
"I'll Cover You Reprise"-Rent
"Bui Doi"-Miss Saigon
"Down Once More/Track This Murderer"(any part where Phantom talks about his mom, no having compassion, the kiss, etc.)
