The other night I put on Maltby and Shire's Closer Than Ever. It has seriously been at least five years since I listened to it. Some beautiful songs on that album. "Fathers of Fathers" always makes me cry and the end of "Life Story" always slays me.

I'll have to come back and add more to this later as I am running late for class, but since alot of older Disney songs have been mentioned I will through mine in. "Baby Mine" from Dumbo, its from the scene where Dumbo goes to visit his mother in "jail". It has to be the most heart wrenching scene ever animated. My husband was dumbfounded when he found me curled up on the couch watching this movie with tears rolling down my face.
As far as music that moves me to happiness I listen to Out Tonight from RENT. Its a great song for when you are getting ready to go do something fun, or to make anything else more enjoyable. I usually play it and a few other "happy songs" when I am cleaning my house or something, it makes the job so much easier.

This might sound a little cheesy but...
Electricity by Elton John (from Billy Elliot the musical)- It put in to words why I love dancing so much around the time when I was considering giving it up.
Somewhere (from WSS), especially at the end of the movie- I think it was the first time I ever cried during a movie. The music is so beautiful and it fits the ending scene perfectly.
Those are the only two I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are others.

most of what truly moves me is Baroque or even earlier. Especially Baroque era dance music. I mean, it just changes me.
Sometimes I think in a past live I was some kind of Baroque royalty as certain Baroque music literally takes me away.
other than that certain Enya music moves me, theme to the Goodbye Girl Movie, the song Sometimes when we touch, many of Judy Collins songs, it just depends. A truly moving song, can make me weep.

This is excruciatingly out of character for me, but I have just been a MESS ever since I accidentally listened to Patty Loveless' "How Can I Help You To Say Goodbye" the other day...I cried like a beaten orphan.
On a more Typical JailyardGuy note, the first movement of Elgar's Cello Concerto in e minor, and the third movement of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 in e minor (I seem to have a thing for e minor, don't I?)
If I must keep in step with the theme of the board, the showtune I listen to whenever I need a good emotional workout is probably "I Hate The Bus" from Caroline, or Change. "I Honestly Love You" from The Boy From Oz is pretty weepy, too, for some reason...

I COMPLETELY forgot about Emsy singing "My Brother...". Funny anecdote about that song...
My sister sent me the Elegies... album a few years ago while I was living in San Francisco. I decided to open it and listen to it at the office. By the end of the song, I was sobbing so obnoxiously I had to leave the office and take a walk on the Embarcadero to calm myself down...I was a WRECK.
I'm with you on the SideShow ballads, too.
Also worth mentioning are "I Don't Know How To Help You", "The Rain Keeps Falling Down", and "Heroes All Around" from Elegies for....Queens, and Donna Lynne Champlin's soul-shaking rendition of "God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind)" from "Our Heart Sings".
I'm gonna have to give the "Anytime (I Am There)" vote to Norm Lewis' version, though...while Carolee's is charming, her vibrato and strident attempts at high belting absolutely DESTROY the beauty of the song for me. "Hitchhiking Across America" is also gorgeous...

Norm Lewis' version of "Anytime" is quite incredible. Then again, it's Norm Lewis...he's always incredible!
Another notable William Finn tearjerker is "That's Enough For Me". Wanda Houston's rendition on Infinite Joy... is breathtaking.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one...maybe it's my mushy Daddy's girl side..."Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle. It just gets me.
Also, I cry like a baby everytime I hear Billy Joel's "Lullaby".
Matt Caplan's "In Between" does it for me too...I'm a sucker for good guitar and the notes just hit me right in the stomach.
