Outrageous! My monthly fee would be going up by $6.00 (from $11.99 to $17.99) as of Sept. 1. I've already cancelled the DVDs by mail plan. I'm only keeping unlimited streaming, although most new titles aren't available to watch instantly. Still, with all of the other options available to watch newly released movies (and the fact that you sometimes have to wait a month before they're available on Netflix anyway) I've decided to just go with the unlimited streaming plan for $7.99 per month. Instead of paying $6 more, I'll be saving $4. TAKE ACTION!
BOYCOTT!
I just use Redbox. Love it!
And another million people learn what Pirate Bay is.
Thanks best12bars! I'll be looking into Redbox.
Yep. I got the email notification this morning.
They are splitting the streaming and the Unlimited DVD packages.
I currently have 1 DVD at-a-time and unlimited streaming for $9.99 per month. Now that will cost $7.99 per month for each.
I think this will end my business with Netflix.
New pricing goes into effect September 1st for current customers and immediately for new customers.

I have been a Netflix customer since 2006. This pisses me off to no end. I'll keep the streaming but as off Sept 1 - goodbye DVD plan.
I have three at a time (blu ray included) plus unlimited streaming and my monthly cost will be exactly the same.
Jordan, they raised the price on everything but the most popular plan. Anyone who wanted the budget DVD plan with streaming is almost doubling their monthly bill.
As soon as I got the email I reduced by plan from 2 disks to 1 (but kept the streaming).
Everyone I know is taking some action in cutting back on Netflix. And twitter is full of angry posts.
This can't end well for Netflix.

I don't have a Blu-ray player, a game system or a laptop (I know, dark ages...and poor...and I don't like sitting in front of my desktop to watch movies), so it's either DVD only or completely getting rid of it.
I'm leaning toward the latter. We ended up Redbox-ing three of the movies in our queue anyway.
This is the second time this year they have raised prices. I was paying $18.01 a month. Now I am paying $21.01. As of September 1st I'll be paying $23.98. Once they put Blockbuster out they feel they can do whatever they want. I plan on cancelling within the month. I've heard nothing but great things about Redbox. How can you beat $1 a movie per night? They are generous with coupons and none of this having to wait a month after the new release comes out to rent it.Even Itunes has specials when renting new movies. I just don't think I'll miss Netflix. Of course, once they see longtime customers canceling they'll offer some incredible deals to get them back.
Ive said it all along but different versions of video stores will be popping back up in the next couple of years.

Unless something's changed recently, I was always under the impression that Redbox was one of the victims of the 28-day exclusivity thing.
The 28 day thing was started so video stores could stay in business but since there are hardly any left there's now this strange 28 day window from when a movie is released for sale to when it hits redbox that you just can't rent it anywhere.
I think I'm just going to switch back to streaming only as they have a bunch of the films I'm asked to write about for various sites. Everything else I can get from the library or Red Box.

A lot of people I know share their streamimg. If 8 people share one account, that's $1 p/p.
I just can't wrap my mind around how they think this is a good thing. Their Facebook page, as of this morning, has 31,000 (yes, that's THOUSAND) comments, and only 700 likes. Other sites like reddit, Huffington Post and their own blog are FULL of people upset by this.
How can they justify raising prices in a weak economy when their BIGGEST sales point was how inexpensive an option they were for movies? I've had two discs (since my wife and I have two separate lists) and streaming since streaming started. While we use streaming, there's simply not enough on there to justify keeping streaming for so much more money. If they put their whole catalog online, I'd be HAPPY to drop discs, but new releases and MANY older things simply aren't available.
Not happy, Netflix, I think you kind of screwed the pooch on this one.
I have three at a time (blu ray included) plus unlimited streaming and my monthly cost will be exactly the same.
How so? I have three at a time (no blue ray) plus unlimited streaming and my monthly fee is going from $19.99+tax to $23.98+tax.
I pay $27.98 a month for 3 at a time + streaming and their email states the following:
Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs (including Blu-ray), 3 out at-a-time (no streaming)
for $19.99 a month
Your price for getting both of these plans will be $27.98 a month ($7.99 + $19.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.
So it will stay the same price for me.
Huh, interesting.
I've been thinking about going down to two disks at a time in light of this new fiasco.
I love reading the fake outrage people are expressing on their facebook page. I'm pretty sure for every 300 people who say they're going to cancel or have already cancelled their service, maybe 1 or maybe even 2 will actually do it.

Bastards!! I pay for my subscription as well as my parents. Why do they have to split the plans?
Um, because it's their company and they can do what they want? Just my guess.
Jordan - I disagree. There's a LOT of pissed off people about this. I think most are going to reduce their plans. They won't cancel as they're threatening because Netflix is still a good deal, but a LOT of their loyal customers are getting hit with a 60% jump in price to keep their plan - that's not going to sit well.
Yeah, streaming is convenient, but their selection is maybe 20% of their DVD selection. It's not worth paying for streaming for that much of a price jump - and I think a LOT of people are going to think that way (that, or those who always forget to return their discs, will just cancel their discs).
On a slightly OT topic, this is an interesting graphic of who's watching what state by state.
It's a little hard to see some of the borders though. I'm actually not sure if my state is "Blessed and Cursed", "Final Destination", or both.
But it's still a cool map.
