David Pogue speaks to a netflix rep.
The actual justification (from the netflix FB page) is a bit vague. Basically higher prices will ensure a longer life for dvd's (??)
My idea of phasing out dvd's is apparently a "conspiracy theory".
Bottom line: still the best deal around
I didn't cancel my subscription because I can't afford the additional $6 per month; although I'm sure many people can't. Ultimately, I cancelled my account because of their callous attitude and complete disregard for their loyal customer base. As I said in a previous post, they could have phased in the higher prices gradually over time. In addition, the initial press release and their subsequent responses could have certainly been handled with much more finesse and in a far more sympathetic tone. At this point, I'd rather give my money to two separate companies and pay twice as much than to continue to support NETFLIX.
"At this point, I'd rather give my money to two separate companies and pay twice as much than to continue to support NETFLIX."
Then stop harping about the 60 PERCENT increase and spend more money elsewhere. If you are leaving NETFLIX because of callous treatment, then why doesn't your thread have that title.
You're not making any sense now.
^ I don't understand this last post. Why does he need to change his thread title?
Luscious explained why he's not happy with the clumsy handling of the increase, and why he decided to leave Netflix. He doesn't really owe anybody an explanation or a better justification. They raised their prices and he's gone.
Why so angry, Bettyboy72?
Thanks best12bars and Reginald.
Although I don't feel like I owe anyone an explanation, allow me to clarify; I initially downgraded my subscription in response to the price increase. I ultimately cancelled my subscription altogether as a result of their callous attitude toward their customer base. Bottom line: they still raised their fees by 60 percent. Title change not warrented.
ETA: I feel that it's okay to bitch about something, provided you're willing to take some sort of action. I bitch about a lot of things that I feel are unfair and unjust, and then I try to do something about it.
Besty, I'm not angry, just pretty irritated. The furor over the NETFLIX increases, not just here but on facebook, etc. boggles my mind.
Don't want to pay it, fine, don't. It's a free country. Go spend your money elsewhere.
Also, people who bitch about this type of stuff tend to be real buzz kills. They get frazzled over every little thing and need to let everyone know about it. Squeaky wheels.
It's like the people who bitch about theatre ticket prices. Then don't go. Theatre ticket prices are cheap compared to most sporting events and some major concerts. However, they are so consumed with the injustice done to them, they are irrational.
That's all.
"Don't want to pay it, fine, don't. It's a free country. Go spend your money elsewhere."
But isn't that what Luscious is doing?
"But isn't that what Luscious is doing?"
Reg, not exactly. I just mean do what you need to do and don't proselytize. Live by your convictions, but no need to advertise or call for boycotts when its an understandable rate raise.
Plus, don't spread lies. Luscious is saying that the HD streaming is inferior on Netflix when plenty of us have voiced that it looks amazing on our equipment. I think Luscious needs to check their connections or something.
This is all I have to say on this. I'm done with this thread.
*Bettyboy drops the microphone on the ground and walks off the stage.
"This is all I have to say on this. I'm done with this thread."
I thought she'd never leave.
Good riddance from this cheap, whiny, lying buzz kill.
"Plus, don't spread lies. Luscious is saying that the HD streaming is inferior on Netflix when plenty of us have voiced that it looks amazing on our equipment. I think Luscious needs to check their connections or something."
I think you need to dial it down a bit and chill.
The Netflix streaming IS inferior. It may look good enough for you, but not for many others, including me.
It's highly compressed, like a cable or dish feed, and all you need is one big explosion or quick horizontal pan to watch the image break apart and pixelate. The sound is inferior, too, compared to what you can get. And FYI, I have state-of-the-art equipment and I worked in the hi-def industry. So no novice here. It's a professional opinion.
I guess I don't see how this is proselytizing anymore than someone saying they don't like Chick-fil-A, Michelle Bachmann, or "Glee." This is a board where people express opinions.
As for the quality of the streaming experience, you have to put me down as someone with bad connections as well (or as a liar): my streaming is frequently interrupted.
But leaving that aside, can't we agree that the movies available make up a quite small fraction of those available on DVD?

Also, the increase may be understandable to you, but no one's explained it to me.
At first people--not Netflix, but their defenders--said it was because of increased charges from the studios ("your precious studios," as you phrased it). But then Netflix said that it was no such thing.
No one has pointed to any added value. And they had a price increase fairly recently.
So no, I don't understand.

I have to admit I am amused and jealous reading this thread.
Here in Australia we don't have have any of the streaming services that you have and all the US sites are blocked. The postal rental DVD market is pretty much as expensive as Netflix high end plans (and that is just for mail order DVDs - no streaming AND depending on the provider, even the top end plans limit people to maybe something like 12 a month).
In fact the plans are most likely more expensive these days then the US versions considering the strength of the Australian Dollar these days.
Oh the actually have websites where I can just stream the shows I want to watch.
I would happily give up my right ball to have the sort of online streaming services you guys got. $30 a month would be a bargin to me.
I dont know why people are so upset about this. Back in my day, we had to make our own movies... and because film hadnt been invented yet, we had to use rocks! You whipper snappers should be grateful you have it so easy!
Edited so I dont make Phyllis cranky yet again...

Yeah, I posted that four posts before you.
Reginald, that price increase was very recent,as in 2011. I was paying a year ago $18.01 (that was including tax) and had been paying that price for years. I got 3 dvds at a time PLUS streaming. Great deal, very happy.
The in January or February it went up to $21.01 a month. I was not happy but it was the first time since I had joined Netflix(back in 2005) that their prices had gone up,so not a big deal.
Now, they are going up again and I'll be paying $24.98. A year ago I was paying 18.00 now it is about 25.00. So, I'm either gonna cancel my entire subscription or just keep the streaming. I have not decided but I have found their are MANY other choices out there and I'd love to send Netflix a message.SO,we'll see.
Deleted because I certainly dont want to make Phyllis cranky again...
Tough titty.
Netflix Stock Falls as Starz Deal Unravels
A major sticking point arose when Starz insisted its content be corralled on a higher-price tier, another person said. Instead of making their content available to any Netflix subscriber paying just $8 per month, Starz executives wanted viewership limited to people paying at least $16 per month for a package that bundles DVD rentals with Internet video.
If this is the case I'm glad Netflix said "F that".
