"Apparently, Donna was stunned to learn, after reviewing your customer-information sheet, that you're a lesbian. On the paperwork, you'd crossed out the word "groom" and written "partner" instead, and then inserted your fiancée's name.
"She said she wouldn't work with me because I'm gay," you recalled. "She also said that I came from a nice Jewish family, and that it was a shame I was gay. She said, 'There's right, and there's wrong. And this is wrong.' "
She also said - and you have the voicemail to prove it - that what you were planning was "illegal" and that "we do not participate in any illegal actions." "

Your link don't lead to the Yelp page, Reg (it actually goes to Google maps, which says it doesn't support the location... funny in its own way).

Posted: 8/18/11 at 7:04pmWOW! People have really flooded that page with bad reviews. Good. Did I hear that the owner has changed their mind? If so, I would STILL not give them any business. Whats done is done and we know that these owners are bigots.

Sounds like the store owner may have broken the law:
"And one more thing: New Jersey amended its civil rights statutes in 1991 to include sexual orientation, and as the NJ Attorney General's website confirms:
'It is unlawful for a person to refuse to buy from, sell to, contract or otherwise do business with an individual because of the individual's race, creed, color, national origin, nationality, ancestry, marital status, domestic partnership or civil union status, liability for service in the Armed Forces of the United States, age, sex, affectional or sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or disability or because of race, creed, national origin or other protected characteristics of the person's spouse, partners, employees, business associates, suppliers or customers.'
This story may be far from over.

Posted: 8/19/11 at 11:04amI love how one of her concerns listed in jacobtsf's link is "Godlessness". I'm assuming she pretends to be a Christian. You know Jesus was all about discriminating others. What was it he said about homosexuality? Oh, yeah...nothing.

And I love how she equates "Universal Healthcare" with godlessness and immorality.
Donna is lucky that the shop turned her away. Why support disgusting people like that store owner with her money ? Support businesses that don't discriminate.

I don't know the town...but we don't have to. I'm sure there are people like this in nearly every town in the world. (OK, maybe not Provicetown.)
Small minded.
Holier than thou.
Moralistic.
While I'm sure this is going to become a bigger legal issue, I agree: better not to give your money to a business that could treat humans this way.
Karma's a biotch.

Posted: 8/19/11 at 12:40pmThank goodness I live too far to ever consider going there for anything. I find it interesting that anyone could technically go into a bridal shop and buy a wedding dress, whether you are getting married or not and those people probably wouldn't get turned away from this woman.

Posted: 8/19/11 at 12:46pmI used to live in Somers Point, not far from that store, actually (the Acme that anchors the shopping mall where this store is was one of two grocery stores I used in the area). And I say this as someone who has lived in and still has a degree of affection for the South -- South Jersey IS the South.

They take being south of the Mason Dixon line very seriously. It's country-er than the deepest backwoods of Arkansas.

Posted: 8/19/11 at 1:52pmMarianne, I haven't spent a good deal of time in Sussex County or North Jersey in general, so I can't really say. Having lived the first seventeen years of my life in South Jersey, though, I have seen a lot of stuff firsthand that might surprise people. Essentially, there are two kinds of conservatives down there. The first are the wealthy people who consistently vote and support conservatives/republicans because they don't want their property taxes to go up, or they don't want their hard-earned money to support the welfare state. Remember that there are very wealthy areas in SJ (Long Beach Island, Cape May, Stone Harbor) where houses can easily start at $1 million. The other faction are the "God, guns, and gays" type. I grew up near the pine barrens, and went to high school with some people who looked like they could have easily passed as Deliverance extras. So, it's a very conservative area for a lot of reasons. I certainly didn't feel very welcomed there as a gay, artistic young person, I can tell you that.
