Excellent opinion piece by Simon Kupar of the Financial Times. Gift Link.
EXCERPT:
I’ve never known Europeans — or a world — as anti-American as they are today. International opinions of the country have cratered since President Trump returned to office, and in Europe have hit record lows, according to the pollster YouGov. Mr. Trump is, after all, not only an American problem, but a global one: just look at his bombings, tariff bluster, threats to annex Greenland and Canada and his deadly slashing of global humanitarian aid. From the outside, it can feel like once-friendly America is nothing but MAGA.
Trump knows the World Cup will be an enormous media event, and probably won’t resist trying to make it all about him, commenting on the daily action or inserting himself into the spectacle. The tournament will coincide with his grandiose plans for America’s 250th anniversary. As he put it in the State of the Union: “I’ve got the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and I wanted to claim the 250th, but I didn’t get away with that one.”

Nice article, but I don't get how he forgot Qatar 2022.
A hellhole. The England team, supposed LGBT allies, ditched their rainbow armbands. The stadiums were built by literal slaves.
Nobody gave a sh!t.
As much as I loathe Trump, is the 2026 really that bad?

As I've come to say, Trump, Qatar, and Hitler are all obviously on the wrong side of any line I'd care to draw between good and evil, for any purpose.

Curious to see if ICE will be stationed at each match as he's been saying he plans to do. More waste of tax payer money.

Funny how the WBC (World Baseball Classic) just set records with people from foreign countries attending games in US stadiums. I guess these people's love of the sport of baseball won out over Trump being POTUS. Trust me, the love of the World Cup will not stop people from coming here for the games.

You could very well be right, but I wouldn't be quite so smug that what happens with one event is a guarantee of what will happen with another.

Considering the World Cup is much more popular than that World Baseball Classic I think there is good reason for optimism. I was not trying to be smug, just pointing out plenty of people from other countries were more than willing to come to US for sporting event.

No, but the general chaos in American airports plus the spectre of roaming ICE agents might.

If TSA agents don't start to get paid, there will be nobody doing security at America's airports.

Guardian US: Fans and players from five African World Cup countries face $15,000 bond to enter US
"A newly expanded policy from the Trump administration could require travelers from five World Cup-qualified countries to front a bond of up to $15,000 in order to enter the United States for the tournament.
"
Even if affordable for some fans, the multi-thousand dollar requirement will be another headache to add to the list of potential complications for fans from those countries, including high ticket prices for the games themselves, hotel prices that are far above average, plus other visa processing delays and potential safety issues created by the presence of federal immigration officers from ICE and other agencies in US cities.
"It is unclear which entities, if any, will be exempt from the visa bonds. While Trump’s travel bans contains exemptions for athletes and officials participating in major sporting events like the World Cup, the visa bonds program contains no such exemption."

Don't let Trump destroy the World Cup but no outage from our liberal BWW friends about NJ Transit marking up RT fare from Manhattan to MetLife Stadium by 800%. The standard fare is $12.90 but will be $150 for the World Cup.

It's not $150. And good for Mike Sherrill for looking out for NJ taxpayers.

It was originally announced at $150; it has now been reduced to $105 which is still absurd.

Wrong again. What is absurd is the actions of FIFA closing off parking and expecting the state of NJ to carry the burdern. Sherrill responded appropriately. If you want to be mad, be mad at FIFA. They are just as evil as Trump.

"New Jersey cuts World Cup fare by 30 percent
The Sherrill administration said it had found sponsors and "non-taxpayer dollars" to cut the fare to $105 from $150."
Did you not read the link you posted (see above) which is what I said in earlier post?

Since yoir original message mentioned "liberal BWW friends" I am guessing you were suggesting we should be outraged at our Democratic Gov. That's where you would be wrong. The outrage should be directed at FIFA.
The World Cup is screwing N.J., plain and simple. We pay, FIFA profits, NYC celebrates.

Wrong Eric. I never blamed the Governor. You made the thread saying Trump was going to possibly destroy World Cup which is political statement. I was pointing out that outrageous price for transportation should have you upset about possible hurting the World Cup. Notice, you were silent about issue until I mentioned it. Wonder why?

Sad to say, but IMO, Trump's xenophobia has already "destroyed" the World Cup re: US hosting responsibilities.
Trump's modeling of xenophobia, and his xenophobic policies have tainted the possibility for a welcoming atmosphere that would assure safety for both athletes and spectators (US citizens or otherwise).
I dread the reality of what Trump will do to embarrass and humiliate the US in yet another "world stage" event. I worry for both athletes and spectators, alike.
