And very stylish...I just can't pull 'em off with my figure. =) And I'm totally with you on the leggings thing. Although I do kind of think they look cute under mini's - for the kids, that is...not for those of us who may have worn them the first time around!

The only reason there was a stink over the Fred Astaire vacuum commercial was they didn't clear the use of his likeness with his estate first. That would be a big no-no.
But Audrey has been everywhere since her passing! So obviously, her estate controllers approve of certain image use.
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it, unless it's something defamatory. But Mrs. Astaire is overly protective, IMO. With a "caretaker" like that, the legendary icon that was/is Fred will soon be forgotten. You have to keep 'em in the public eye, or people will forget.
He'll be the next Norma Shearer.

I completely agree, best12bars. But I thought that Astaire's estate had given permission? Or part of the estate (the kids) had, and the wife hadn't? I can't recall...
Regardless, I thought the Astaire ad was charming, too, and if using the likenesses/footage of departed celebrities in ads helps future generations discover great talents like Mr. Astaire's and Ms. Hepburn's, then it can only be a good thing. =)

Posted: 9/8/06 at 2:03pmMy mom has partial control over the use of Monty Clift's likeness, not that anyone bothers to ask her... except A&E Biography. They asked... and Mom loaned them some of the Clift home movies for the segment. She "inherited" the honor after Monty's brother Brooks passed away, and Brooks controlled the Montgomery Clift estate before that. Mom is Brooks's widow.

best12bars: That is so cool! I love Montgomery Clift (nice avatar, by the way)!
Rath: Yeah, I was thinking the same thing... She really was TINY. Like a Q-tip.

She is like a Q-tip! She has no hips at all. Lucky girl. She is thin indeed, but part of her thing is she's just tiny altogether. She's so cute in the skinny black pants.
I, on the other hand, have my mother's hips. Good hips for birthin' babies, but a little less forgiving in skinny little trousers.
I am still going to the Gap to try them on - just in case. Market Audrey to me and I'll bite. PLus, the pants are black, and black is slimming, right? Right?

We just like to think that. But truly, she was too thin.
Which is what makes her the perfect model for skinny pants.
#34re: New GAP ad!
Posted: 9/8/06 at 3:18pmAudrey battled anorexia for most of her life; hence, too thin.

Exactly. And yet, she's held up as a standard of beauty.
Scary.

I consider her a standard of beauty, mostly because of her taste and style and the true inner beauty that shone out of her. I aspire to be more like her, but realize that I will never be that waifishly thin--nor would I want to.
I'm sure there were people who held up Karen Carpenter as a standard of beauty, much like Nicole Richie is today.

Nicole Ritchie is not - she's definitely thought of as scary thin, and Karen Carpenter was never someone held up as a physical beauty.

I like the ad. But my favorite GAP commercial was the West Side Story inspired campaign. "Are you a khaki or a jean?"

5'7", 110 pounds, according to one site.
That's skinny. I think I weighed that when I was 13.
Now, if only we can keep the neon and the bad perms in the 80s.

That was one good thing about the '80s -- I was much taller back then with the 3" wall of crispy bangs that I had.
Yeah, it was a good look (said with loads of sarcasm).

I really adore the ad. I think it's cute, fun and right in the spirit of Audrey. I actually went to the Gap today and bought some stuff. The last time I did that was when SJP was their spokesmodel. Gap sure does now how to corner its market, if you know what I mean
Oh, and as far as the Audrey anorexia/bulimia rumours, they are false. She wasn't anorexic, at least not in the sense that she consciously starved herself. Growing up in Europe during the war, food was extremely scarce for her and her family and she suffered from malnutrition, and she never completely got over it. Because of it she was used to eating very little all of her life.

there's a larger then life image of her on the window of the gap at the mall... i saw people taking pictures with it.

Posted: 9/9/06 at 10:09pmI love the commercial. I was leaving to go to the Gap today and I told my sister I wanted the skinny black pants. She practically blocked me from walking through the door and said "have you lost your mind? you're ass is too huge to wear those pants." What a bitch (I didn't go to the Gap).

Awww, trc, that wasn't nice! Take heart in the knowledge that 99% of women can't wear them, though. Including, I'm completely sure, your mean sister.
