All this environmental consciousness by taking public transportation and you want to talk on your cell phone? Doncha know the latest research says that that's killing off our honeybees, thereby threatening the very foundation of our foodchain?
Hang up your phone and save a honeybee.

Kelzama,
I saw that on the news last week about the honeybees. This morning there was an update though, and they believe a fungus is responsible for the bees sudden demise (as has happened in Europe and Asia).

Posted: 4/26/07 at 11:54amI got on the El yesterday and I noticed something completely off. It took me awhile to realize what it was. Nobody was jabbering away on phones. It was such a delightful ride home.

Very true, Dottie, but just think of how much more quiet it would be if every diehard environmentalist shut off the cell phone in the name of environmental preservation.
Then all we'd need is a good excuse for everyone else, since pleading common courtesy and good manners doesn't seem to be working...

Posted: 4/26/07 at 1:05pmSometimes it doesn't even work on the so-called "quiet" cars on Amtrak. I have become increasingly aware of when and where I use my cell phone. Is peace and quiet so bad?
#56re: no talking on the jitney!!
Posted: 4/26/07 at 1:06pmit is not. that's why i turned off the TV in the dentist's office while i was getting my cleaning. what's next? TVs in bathroom stalls.

Posted: 4/26/07 at 1:34pmSpeaking of bathroom stalls, I just don't get that people feel the need to talk on the cell phone when they're in one. I've experienced that both at work and in the airport last week.

Posted: 4/26/07 at 1:37pmI've noticed that, too, Dottie! That's just beyond gross. Plus, the bathroom is practically the only place people can have a moment's peace anymore, so why spoil it?
#59re: no talking on the jitney!!
Posted: 4/26/07 at 1:39pmthe first time it happened to me at work, i was so flustered and annoyed, that the sanctity of the bathroom was destroyed that it took me 20 seconds to recover and have a fit of flushing...

At my previous law firm, one of the partners was dictating a letter to his secretary on his dictaphone while relieving himself. My gosh, was that really necessary?
When I hear that happening, I'm so tempted to flush repeatedly just so that the other person knows where the conversation is taking place!!

All access, all of the time. I believe it has added, exponentially, to the increasing inability of people to spend time alone, to read a book, or just ponder on things. Nothing is special anymore, because the expectation is to have as much of whatever, whenever...
Cell phones are *totally* out of control. It has become a form of entertainment rather than communication. Now, I like to be in communication with my friends, but sometime I just want to know that the phone isn't going to ring for the next two hours. Spending time quietly and alone is oddly nurturing.
I'll admit to being kind of stunned, Liotte, that things have progressed to the point where you can toss around the Free Speech argument...in this context...with a straight face. And I understand that there are many who would lodge the same argument, so I'm not picking on you specifically, other than that you were the one who actually voiced it here. But whoever is the one to toss it around, it makes me almost cringe in embarassment on their behalf.
Free speech is about being able to speak your mind without fear of prosecution. It's not about being able to talk to whomever, whenever,on your cell phone just because you want to.
And there's a bottom line to all of this. It's their companyand they have the right to make that rule. Just as you have a choice as to whether on not you want to patronize the Jitney.

NO PHONES ON PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION!
Unless it as an emergency conversation involving your children, terrorism, or a loved ones immediate health. STAY OFF YOUR DAMN PHONE ON TRAINS, BUSES, JITNEYS, FERRIES, and COMMERCIAL AIRPLANES!
Because we DON'T care, and by having your poorly timed conversation we are FORCED to listen. And anyone who suggested I get some headphones should be thrown in front of the next moving bus.
OK. I think I'm done.

How do you know if it's an emergency if you don't answer in the first place? And what if your mother believes it should be treated as an emergency and won't let you get off the phone?

Posted: 4/26/07 at 3:37pmIf it's an emergency most likely they will leave you a message and you can check it. If they don't leave you a message, chances are it's not really an emergency.
#68re: no talking on the jitney!!
Posted: 5/3/07 at 11:46amif it is an emergency, wtf are you going to do about it on the jitney, or the airplane or in the office friggin' bathroom?!? c'mon people. i really think we need to thin out the herd.
