PROP 50 here in California is likely to pass, but polls don't close until 8:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
Not sure what the expectations are in other States where elections are being held today.

The NYC, Virginia, and the New Jersey elections are what people are really focused on today along with California.

In all my many decades of voting, this ballot was certainly the easiest to complete. Just one question with one answer: YES or NO. The passage of PROP 50 is vitally important not just for the State of California, but for our wonderful country, as well.

Is there any chance that Mamdani could lose?
I genuinely see him as presidential material. I rue that stupid rule that says not all US citizens are eligible for the Oval Office. Explain to me why that exists again?
I mean, I was kinda glad it kept Arnie out of the race, but in hindsight that silly law shoulda been scrapped a LONG time ago.

Here is a decent explainer:

Thanks, Steve. I guess I can see a smidge of reasoning in there somewhere, but I'm still not convinced.
The current Prime Minister of Canada had triple citizenship at the time of his election earlier this year. He has now renounced the other two, but I don't think any Canadians are particularly concerned.

You mean the douchebag who sucked Trump's****by apologizing for that perfectly reasonable advertisement about tariffs? I have zero patience for world leaders who give Trump exactly what he wants. F*CK Mark Carney.

I am particularly rooting for Jay Jones as Attorney General of Virginia. He most definitely speaks my language.

IMO, if Mandami wins, we will have the opportunity to observe the kind of political leader he is before he might be considered a candidate for POTUS. We did not have that opportunity with Trump and look how that turned out...
I also believe in the reasoning behind the requirement for natural born citizenry. It makes sense to me re: loyalty to a single nation.
If anything, I believe that the mistake of electing Trump has shown that the Qualifications for Presidency need to be stricter, and should require elements like (at a bare minimum):
- a minimum of 2 years experience as an elected official in a lower-level office
- a collegiate-level degree or minimum 2-year coursework in political science
- a clean criminal record with no felony convictions
As a former teacher, I was not only required to have completed a college degree with a satisfactory GPA, but also obtain certification status in every/any state in which I intended to to teach. The NCLB Act of 2001 additionally required that I show proof (on a yearly basis) of continuing education, as well as updating any endorsements listed on my license, else risk losing my license/certification.
The irony that we no longer have a US Department of Education because of a megalomaniac/failed businessman/convicted felon bozo is not lost on me. ...Not to mention that some requirements to obtain employment at McDonald's are stricter than those for the office of the presidency.

Well, yeah, him… but his triple citizenship isn't why he gave Trump a BJ. He has never been a US citizen. As well as being Canadian, he was Irish, and British. I was talking only about his eligibility for the office. All US citizens should have equal rights, even morons.

Agreed, but "equal rights" does not (or should not) equate to holding the highest office of the land (and arguably the world).

So, you think a General in the military like our 34th POTUS (Eisenhower) did not have qualifications to be POTUS - ok.

Well, I think a thought along the lines of "**** America" many times each day, and yet I'm eligible to be elected president. I suspect that, on average, people who (somehow) chose to be American citizens are more loyal than those of us who are stuck here because we were born here.

Strongly disagree. EVERY American should be eligible for First Citizen. That's what being American should mean - equal opportunity for all. Egalitarianism. College degrees or lack thereof, even age requirements (how did they decide on 35? Were they Company fans?)… all barriers for eligibilty should be removed. The electorate can decide who is fit. In theory.

I totally agree with you. There's obviously a rational argument to be made for saying that only adults (however defined) should be able to vote, but citizens born outside of the USA, and citizens under 35, should not be relegated to taxation without (potential) representation.

That's your interpretation of what you imagine I believe.
I am very well aware that a General in the military has very close ties with, and knowledge of the operation of a POTUS, as well as the operations of other government officials.
If you'd like, I'm very happy to concede that my use of the phrase "at minimum" was not all-encompassing enough. I still hold to my belief that the Qualifications for Presidency need to be stricter.

It looks like the Democrats are going to sweep tonight, which is encouraging enough. But I think the margin in the Virginia governor race, which is usually much closer, points to a good year in 2026. I hope.
