He's doing EXACTLY what I said he would do.

I am surprised by this at all.

Everyone got all excited when Clinton became President, and all we got out of that was 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'...

Which seems appropriate, since we were truly 'done' - and without being kissed.

Pentagon: No plans to end don't ask-don't tell
By LARA JAKES ? 2 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Pentagon says it has no plans to repeal the don't ask-don't tell policy for gay troops.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said Tuesday that the military's top leaders have only had initial discussions with the White House about whether gay troops should be open about their sexuality.

Under current rules, openly gay troops can be discharged from the U.S. military.

Morrell said the White House has not asked for the 1993 policy to be scrapped.

"I do not believe there are any plans under way in this building for some expected, but not articulated, anticipation that don't ask-don't tell will be repealed," Morrell told reporters at the Pentagon.

President Barack Obama committed during the 2008 presidential campaign to moving to end the Clinton administration-era policy.

The 1993 law was enacted as a compromise between openly gay people serving in the armed forces and those opposed to gays in uniform.

Morrell said Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen both have discussed the issue with Obama.

"They're aware of where the president wants to go on this issue, but I don't think that there is any sense of any immediate developments in the offing on efforts to repeal don't ask-don't tell," Morrell said.

All I want the man to do is address the issue publicly.

There is change happening in this country, faster than anyone could ever have imagined, even in Iowa! Obama ran on the platform of change, and by not addressing the issue, he is deliberately choosing NOT to be part of that change.

Say something!

"Look at the rally against gay marriage in NYC last Sunday"

I thought the rally on the 17th was FOR gay marriage - were there two? Or was there some sort of large counter-demonstration?

I don't want to ASSume anything, as I don't live in NYC, so I'm just asking.

"All I want the man to do is address the issue publicly."

Frankly I don't know what you mean, his website, his campaign and his press secretary talk about it. In fact that article you posted mentions how he has sent personal letters to people dismissed from the military. Just because he isn't out screaming about doesn't mean he isn't concerned. This man pays attention and is extremely thoughtful. Did you know he is going to work to give transgendered people the same right? Do you have any idea how fiery the topic of gay rights will be in a few months as a Supreme Court Justice is chosen? Is it possible "talking about it right now" might be counterproductive for him as a leader?

Of course none of this could happen fast enough and he could be out speaking. You can argue he isn't addressing a ton of issues "publicly." Obama is already acting differently especially when it comes to issuing "executive orders." Something George Bush felt all-powerful at. We need a president who works with congress and knows how to lead.

" he is deliberately choosing NOT to be part of that change. "

Just last week Obama picked openly gay Jenny Durkan as US Attorney for the Western District of Washington. You sound like a bitter soul. Obama has done a lot in the last 100 days of his presidency. One big change no one talks about is his discounted plan for people on Cobra. If you are laid-off you can now receive Cobra at a 65% discount. That is huge in this economic downturn. Something a republican would never do and something that is surely needed for thousands out of work and sick. My parents lost their house when my dad lost his job and subsequently couldn't swing Cobra under Bush.

And yes there was a surprisingly large group of protesters in NY at a rally against gay marriage.

paljoey was remarkably clear about what he wants. the fact that you claim to not understand that very clear request makes you either staggeringly stupid or a liar. since you later address why you feel the lord high barry himself has been silent, you're obviously a liar, josh.

Did you know he is going to work to give transgendered people the same right?

Oh, I'm sure he is going to do a lot of things. Maybe. Someday. We've heard a lot of Presidents make and break a lot of promises. And all during the campaign and election, there seems to have been some sort of magic ideology that Obama is predestined to behave differently. Maybe he will, but I'm not holding my breath for this man to be any more magical and majestic and moral than any other President. I voted for him for simply being the best choice available, but I would never EVER be foolish enough to believe any Presidential candidate would live up to their promises. It's part of the election game, but rarely has anything to do with their term in office. Should he run for a second term, I've no doubt he will focus on his achievements, whatever they may be, gloss over his broken promises and make entirely new ones whether or not he believes he can keep them. Obama is a man and a politician. Something we should always keep in the backs of our minds.

He's barely been in the White House for 100 days, and has accomplished a lot more that Bush did in 8 years.

Obama will be in the White House for 8 years, after he's relected. Sounds like it's a little early to say that he's not going to do anything regarding "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." He's got bigger fish to fry these days. The economy is his first priority, as well it should be.

I too am deeply disappointed but not entirely surprised by Obama's silence=death on civil rights issues of great importance to the LGBTQ community. He is NOT progressive, he is merely liberal; a progressive would never handle the looting of the financial markets the way he has. And if the man can't multitask, prioritize and deal with domestic, economic, health care, foreign policy and other issues then he should have stayed home. Bailing out the crooks on Wall Street is more important than my civil rights? Don't think so. Props to Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann for bringing these issues up every day. 40 years since the Stonewall Riots, it looks like we will have to riot again to get what they don't want to give us: EQUALITY.

Boombaboy, show us all where Obama is not progressive. The economy is his first priority as it's effecting ALL Americans. This recession does not discriminate.

How would you handle this? You sound like you have all the answers.

TD, I never said that I had the answers, and I didn't ask everyone, like you said. It was referred to 1 person.

It wasn't until practically the end of his 8 years, that Bush even said that the country is in a recession. Obama said that within minutes of taking office. Look at what he's doing with the economy - stimulas package, bailing out the banks, automakers, creating jobs........admitting that there's a problem. This recession is effecting everyone, it doesn't discriminate.

He's damned if he does, and he's damned if he doesn't. He didn't create the problem. He's trying to fix it. It took a lot of years to get into this mess, and it's going to take a few more to get out of it.

Maybe Obama will overturn Don't Ask/Don't Tell, and maybe he won't. Just because it's not on the top of list of things to do, does not make him a bigot like the person who started this thread said he is.
