Obama raises the Apology Level from "I have erred" to "I deeply regret":
===
"Well look, if there - obviously, if I worded things in a way that made people offended, I deeply regret that. But the underlying truth of what I said remains, which is simply that people who have seen their way of life upended because of economic distress are frustrated and rightfully so. And I hear it all the time when I visit these communities. People say they feel as if nobody is paying attention or listening to them and that is something - that is one of the reasons I am running for president. I saw this when I first started off as a community organizer and the steel plants had closed, and I was working with churches in communities that had fallen on hard times. And they felt angry and frustrated."
Obama says he regrets impact of his remarks about "bitter" small-town Americans
Memo to Obama...God and Guns are to always be praised!
Hell, folks are still mourning the passing of Charlton Heston so his timing was bad on several levels.
Once again a leading Democratic candidate seeking the office of POTUS overlooked Rule #1 of American Politics...that is, it's not about being right or wrong but winning elections.
I'm still s-m-h in disbelief. This coming from one of Obama's biggest supporters. I hope he doesn't experience backlash from rural Illinois voters if/when he attempts to re-up as a US Senator in a couple of years.
The truth will NEVER win you an election; at least not in this country. Ultimately, we get the President we deserve.
"He's great with prepared speeches but when he makes off-the-cuff remarks he seems arrogant and supercilious.
He's got to stop sticking those size 11 1/2's in his mouth."
says the man who supports senator "sniper fire in bosnia" clinton... i believe she said that "off-the-cuff" and during prepared speeches.
please... i dont think this will cost him anything. and the way this election is going, i think the democrats are going to end up voting for john mccain as well... so we deserve whats coming to us.

And again, like I said about last week's "apology" from Jay Leno and so many other public "apologies"--it does no good to say "If anyone was offended I apologize."
That only accuses the offended party of being overly sensitive.
The only apology that rings true--in public life or personal life--is an apology that acknowledges wrongdoing.
Otherwise it's placating and it's phony.
oh well. i'm over the election anyhow. its a shame that he said it, its 100% true, but its a shame... too much "brutal honesty" is not a quality americans seem to want in a president.
if anything i was much more offended by senator botoxes jokes on Leno when she said she was late because she was under sniper fire attack. how hilarious. to make a joke of the fact that you blatantly lied to the country (many times) in hopes that people would forgive and forget quickly. hilarious. a true politician if there ever was one. the clintons should teach a class on how to climb to the top by doing whatever it takes and playing as dirty as possible.
over the election. over the democratic party. over obama and clinton. we're getting mccain and we deserve it.
cubanpab---I kinda wanted to yell at you for being so negative. Then I stopped myself when I realized you're right.
About all of it.
Damn.
best,
it sounds like i'm being negative, but i'm just so frustrated and disappointed and over it all. it does sound negative. not my intention. just exhausted. we had a big office lunch on friday, everyone in the room was a dem except one of my coworkers... and half of them were bashing obama so much it was ridiculous. saying they would all vote mccain. the other half bashing clinton saying they'd vote mccain.
its ridiculous whats happened. we deserve whats coming to us. 4 more years of GWB. i hope we're all ready.
and on that note i'm signing off BWW for a while... papa and pal open the champagne bottles and start celebrating... i need to take a break from all the obama vs clinton bull****.

It will be 8 years of Clinton/Obama and 8 years of Obama/Feingold.
16+ years of peace and prosperity.
I don't know, and I guess he's backtracked since then, but I think this is a pretty good response:

Uh yeah . . . I live in small town S.C. and people ARE bitter. They are upset and believe they really have no voice. That is why so many people are leaning towards Obama in this state, because he speaks the truth and doesn't sound like a whiny bitch about everything (Hillary, I am looking at you, babe). I still hope Obama wins but people would rather hear sugar coated lies than the truth, and that is what makes me sad.
I agree that McCain may very well win this, and I don't want to hear ANY bitching from people in this country when it happens.
"It isn't derogatory. It's a truthful observation with empathy. And in an era filled with B.S. politicians who only speak when it serves them, flatters them, or to sling crap at another politician, I like his assessment of things.
He's telling us what we need to hear, not what we want to hear.
Very interesting. And very risky. But ESSENTIAL in order to see exactly where we are and move forward. "
Those were my thoughts exactly.
OK PalJoey, you've twisted my arm long enough now.
Our only hope is Clinton/Obama in 08 otherwise we're toast. Even that lineup won't waltz into the winners circle. Yesterday, I felt that he should decline the offer to join her on the ticket as his VP. However, his bowing out altogether would piss off too large a Dem voting bloc.
I personally believe that Obama should concede the nomination after his comeuppance in PA to save face and the party. The public wants to see him eat a little humble pie for the first time. The high road for him is to defer to Senator Clinton and fade to black for a minute. She needs time to plan an attack against McCain who's already on the offensive via his surrogates.
A similar gaffe in the run up to the general election would cost the Dems the election. Hillary is too shrewd a politician to make such a faux pas when all is on the line.
CubanPab-I'd never make the mistake of condescending before you bro but keep your head up and chalk this one up as experience. I've sent a personal record amount of money to Obama's coffers but this is the way the ball bounces in politics.
Christ almighty. Are we really so soundbite-controlled that one perhaps ill-phrased but no less accurate statement can undo a campaign? (side note: why was the "speaking to a specific group of supporters" excuse supposed to fly for Sally Kern but not here)?
People ARE bitter. Why else would certain blogs be giving so much ink of late to the evil plans of Absolut Vodka to give the Southwest back to Mexico, Obama's lack of manhood because he can't bowl and eats arugula instead of cheesesteaks and whether American Idol censored the word "Jesus" the other day? Pathetic grasping for boogeymen to explain their own failures.
If anything, the chip-on-the-shoulder overreaction from this just confirms what he was saying.
Person A: You have a violent temper.
Person B: What the hell are you talking about? I don't have a violent temper. I should slit your throat for even saying that.
(another side note: Obama and I wear the same size shoes?)

So, the pastor at my church brought this up today. He agrees 100% with Obama and told the congregation that it was time to look honestly at the state of the country. Many are using religion for the wrong reasons and it needs to stop. Stop being "bitter" and instead look at what is important.
I was shocked (but this is the same pastor who tries to preach about Gay rights to small-town hicks), but if more religious leaders do this it will be damage control (but I do not know how many of these leaders support Obama in the first place).

Note to Obama:
People in PA have embraced guns and religion for decades (if not generations), when times were good and jobs abundant. To associate their faith and embracing of the second amendment to feelings of bitterness due to economic downturns, loss of jobs and industry, and the rise of immigration is, imo, totally misguided. Are they bitter? Yes. But don't attribute clinging to their core believes on bitterness.
I've lived both in PA and in the "elite" world of Beverly Hills. I can tell you first hand, the people in Beverly Hills love their guns too. You just don't hear about it.
let's face it: the "apology" amounted to, "i'm sorry you got offended when i told you what's wrong with you, but i'm right and until you accept that fact you'll always be a bitter and ignorant fascist."
way to clear that up bammy.
This may be just another bump in the road, or it may be something bigger. We’ll see. I think tonight’s CNN Compassion Forum and Wednesday’s debate will be the moments that define whether or not this has legs.
I think that most people are smart enough to understand the true intention of Obama’s words. I’m not hearing any of these small town people coming out saying they’re offended. The only claims of offense I’m hearing are coming from Clinton supporters, who are not so much outraged as they are masturbating over the silver bullet they think been given, and Republicans who would love to see Obama fail because they know they can more easily beat Hillary in November.
The notion of the last minute silver bullet bringing down the frontrunner so the underdog can break through to glory is also a gift to the press. They’ll run it as long as the drama of it plays. If Obama comes through tonight and Wednesday night in a direct discussion of it, and people are satisfied, we’re back where we were last week, with Obama a little bruised but still clearly in the lead. If he doesn’t address it to people’s satisfaction, it’ll continue and Hillary will use it with super delegates.
The issue will remain then, at this point, that she will still most likely be behind in pledged delegates and, to nominate her, super delegates would have to go against the pledged delegate count. The reception this will get from the people will be interesting.
In any event, I certainly wouldn’t count Obama out at this point. This is nothing compared to Hillary’s Bosnia/Penn/Bill/Columbia/NAFTA pile, all of which point to her lack of judgment and trustworthiness, things that will offend the entire country, not just small town America. If those things didn’t knock her out, why should this knock him out?
Plus, she's been talking recently about how much she looooooves guns and how she used to hunt as a little girl.
As this drags on and on, it's Hillary (and Bill) I like less and less. Not Obama.

This is not what Obama was saying at all, and it just reminds me how much I hate Clinton for spinning this way beyond anything intelligible.
"To associate their faith and embracing of the second amendment to feelings of bitterness due to economic downturns, loss of jobs and industry, and the rise of immigration is, imo, totally misguided."
That is not what he said. When times are hard, you turn to what gives you comfort and strength to make it through. That is the point he was making. And any other meaning someone gets out of it, having read it in context, is simply a failure of reading comprehension.
Amen, Priest. I used to be FOR Clinton . . . but I am so tired of her at this point. Obama all the way, baby!
I used to be for Clinton, too. Then there were many months where I was undecided and kept going back and forth. But now? Clinton has continued to disappoint me. I wish I held her in the same esteem that I did way back during the New Hampshire primaries when I cheered for her victory there. But 3-4 months is an eternity in politics. She has disappointed me in a lot of ways. Obama has, too. But not at the same magnitude.
