I wonder how all those great understudies will feel if the four principals renew?
I think that MOST of them would be in line to replace them when they depart. At least, the director has hinted as much. Of course, there ARE the openings in the touring casts, the London cast, the Australian cast AND even a Dutch cast.
JLY has said that he MIGHT want to do the show in London. Yet I think he also wants to do TV and movies. And you have to strike while the iron is hot. There have got to be some timing conflicts along the the way. And timing is everything.
Just ask David Narona.

Where did you hear that?

I think I read it in an interview with Des McAnuff at Playbill.com.
I THINK it was Playbill.com. I've read so much on JB that all the stuff is running together.
NPG, thank you so much for the news!
Tennessee Twang, I agree that there will probably be time/schedule conflicts down the line. At the same time, I am happy that John and the other main 3 would like to stay for a little while longer. While the show would still be in excellent shape with such fantastic understudies taking over for good, when it happens I will be sad.
Do OBC members have more latitude over how long they stay in a show?
I would hope that John could at least finish the year with JB, then film a pilot or do something in an ABC show in the early Spring. Whatever it ends up being, I hope it's a great project, something that challenges him and fits his talents the way this JB role has.

I read about the chance of there being an Australian production but I had no idea about there being a Dutch production. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the dirctor hinted at the possiblty of doing a movie version of Jersy Boys.
Here's the article:

I would love a movie version of Jersey Boys in the near future, even if sometimes the results are mixed. Like, for example, I have high hopes for The History Boys and worries about the Hairspray film.

I don't think a movie version would be as popular as the Broadway show. This show just feeds off of audience interaction and reaction.

Well a movie version might not happen at all. If one were to happen it would be intersting to see how they do the narration with each guys since they are talking to the audience during the show.
billygoatgirl...you said you were going to try rush on the 23rd of Sept right? Well I still can't go But, the dear miss broadwaybetty might. We are going to see Daniel at the Ars Nova the night before and she's gonna go rush the next morning. Send her a PM or something...
And BTW...Daniel Reichard is doing a performance at the Ars Nova for the NYMF on September 22 at 11:45 PM...in case anyone wants to go...

Thank you so much for the info new_philosophy_girl! I'm wondering what the rush will be like then since school will have started by then so hopefully it won't be as crazy. I send her a PM somtime today.
If they did a movie I would love to see the four guys in it, that would make it so much better.

I've never been to the Netherlands, but based on everything I've read, seen and heard, it appears that MOST Dutch citizens are fluent in English. As a matter of fact, travel writer Rick Steves who hosts a PBS travel show, said he never gets to practice his Dutch when he's in Holland because he never meets anyone who doesn't speak English!
So it's no surprise that several English language Broadway shows have been big hits in Holland.
But for the life of me I can't find the article I read that mentioned a possible Dutch version of the show. But I'm certain that I saw it, SOMEWHERE!
"I would love a movie version of Jersey Boys in the near future, even if sometimes the results are mixed. Like, for example, I have high hopes for The History Boys and worries about the Hairspray film."
I too would love to see a movie version of the show. But it takes so long for Broadway shows to reach the screen that by the time Jersey Boys gets made, The four principals will be waaaay too old to recreate their roles. They might be the right ages to play the PARENTS of the Jersey boys though.
Even if the movie was filmed right now, they'd be too old to play the roles in the earliest stages of the story when they are supposed to be teens or in their early twenties. Only Daniel MIGHT be able to pass for 19 or so, and even with him, that's stretching it. They'd probably have to double or perhaps triple cast each role for the actors to be convincing at every age. Things you can get away with on stage are just not possible in film.
"I don't think a movie version would be as popular as the Broadway show. This show just feeds off of audience interaction and reaction."
I agree that the audience interaction is a major part of JB's appeal. But that's where a great film director would be important. Although Des McAnuff who has some experience in film would probably want to direct the movie, getting a director with LOTS of experience doing both stage and screen work, like Oscar and Tony-winner Mike Nichols, would be great.
Nichols understands the language of BOTH mediums and he'd know how to "open up" the show for film while keeping a good deal of the excitement of the stage show intact.
And beleive it or not, it's possible to maintain a lot of a show's excitement on film.
Early word on the long-delayed film version of Dreamgirls says that director Bill Conlon has done just that. And if it can be done for the Dreamgirls, it can be done for Jersey Boys.
Besides, many people have noted that much of the staging and directoral flourishes that McAnuff used, have as their genesis, Michael Bennett's legendary staging or the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls.
I've even heard some people say that Jersey Boys is just a white, male, version of Dreamgirls, and they mean that as a compliment.
When I said the four guys I was meaning the John, Daniel, Bobby and Christian

If JLY goes to London to do Jersey Boys, I will so be there!
I'm guessing none of them are doing the national tour, huh? But I don't think Frankie has been cast yet. JLY's contract will probably be renewed to continue on Broadway, though. I guess I won't be able to see him anytime soon.
Oh, and about a movie version of JB - I'm not for it. I guess I just don't have enough faith, but I think that - without an audience - it just won't be as entertaining and fun. It would DEFINITELY be interesting though! But I think they would cast at least two people for each part [younger Frankie, older Frankie] since it's a movie. I don't know, I just don't think it'll work very well on screen. I don't really like movie musicals in general, especially after what happened with RENT. I don't really like the trend of movie musicals... why do musicals have to be made into movies? Especially when they're already perfect on stage.
For me, what I love about JB is all the energy coming from the stage that you can feel. It's so... overwhelming that I start crying during all the songs [even the upbeat ones]. A movie can't do that. But, hey, who knows? Maybe with a good director they can pull this off! Oh, and they would have to cast the original four guys!
I don't think a movie version would work too well. Part of the reason the actors' portrayals are so amazing is because they are able to grow and change on stage (JLY especially). It wouldn't translate too well to a movie.
Well, when I first thought of the idea of a JB movie, it was mainly with the quick idea that the four originals would be involved. But as y'all have said, there are many barriers to that actually happening. Still, I'd like to see an adaptation and it could work under the right circumstances. I see movie musicals as a complement (not a replacement) to a theatre experience. And they're potentially good exposure to music and culture. The RENT movie wasn't perfect but I do have some friends, who don't normally care for musicals, who liked the movie a lot.
Tomorrow we find out what's on Daniel Reichard's iPod. :)
And remember that funny clip from youtube that John posted on his blog? The kids in that video thanked John for mentioning it. I thought that was cute.

While a movie with all four of the guys immortalized on the big screen would be nice, I think I like the Broadway version way too much.
Are you talking about on John's myspace Alejandra? I read it and had to see the clip again. It's too funny.
Is anyone watching the matinee show tomorrow? I'm going to be in the city because I'm watching "The History Boys," and I was thinking of swinging by the theatre to buy some souvenirs because I didn't get a chance to when I saw the show last week. I didn't want to miss anyone at the stagedoor so I ran out as fast as I could.

Both his myspace (I love his new layout, btw) and then some of the comments under the Youtube link itself. People wrote things like, "I came to watch this b/c John's site mentioned it" LOL.
Have fun at The History Boys, Meryl. And I hope you get some nice souvenirs.
In answer to your question Alejandra925 - I saw JB in May on my first trip to NY. Saw several other shows too - but nothing, NOTHING compared....I only wish I saw JB 5 times instead of seeing 4 other shows!! (scary huh?)
Aww, not scary, but understandable! It's like an experience you don't want to end. I listened to an interview with JLY in which the interviewer from Reader's Digest said she had seen the show twice but felt that she could see it, like, 20 more times and
still learn something out of it, enjoy it, etc. In spite of her serious "objective" tone, she still sounded like a fangirl at heart, LOL.
Now all I do is play my soundtrack (I'm on my 3rd copy from Amazon!)
Third already? Wow. :) I am thinking of getting the recording for a friend of mine as a gift.

Don't feel weird about wanting to see it so much! The first time I saw it, I was in love with it so much that I saw it the night after, and the night after that. I was in love!

Thanks Alejandra! I smell inner fan girl hahaha She knows she wants to see Jersey Boys again *smirks* I know I do!
So, what's on Daniel's iPod?:
"My taste in music is all over the place--just like my attention span! My iPod shuffles India Arie's new album "Testimony" (truly amazing), the Talking Heads (fun wild times music), Edie Brickell's "Volcano" (honest and heartfelt album), Four Seasons' "Genuine Imitation Life Gazette" (their obscure concept album), Wendy Ho (when I want to laugh), Erykah Badu (a true musical artist), John Denver (love me some JD on the days that I feel the children and the flowers are my sisters and my brothers), Fleetwood Mac (my favorite rock band), Joni Mitchell (need I explain?) and Stevie Wonder (need I say 'need I explain'?). It's all music that I have picked up from friends, siblings, relationships, and random life moments. That's pretty cool."
Haha I think the "attention span" and the John Denver comments are my favorite parts. All the more reason to love this man. :0)
Daniel is so funny and adorable! He has a lot of personality. Thanks for posting that Rachel. The John Denver comment is my favorite part. :)
