Manwhile, I'm really glad Natalie Portman has been nominated. She should've be for The Professional (or Leon, or whatever you want to call it)

She certainly makes me feel friendly.

I think the greatest performance by a woman in the past thirty years would HAVE to be Phoebe Cates in Fast Times a Ridgemont High.

Interesting choice, lol. My pick would be Emily Watson in "Breaking the Waves".

I haven't seen TRAINING DAY, so I offer absolutely nothing to this conversation in terms of that.

However, as far as the best female performance in the last thirty years, were you guys being serious about the RIDGEMONT HIGH woman? It seems like a joke. The first performance that comes to mind for me is Ellen Burstyn in REQUIEM FOR A DREAM. The best in thirty years, I can't say - I would have had to see every single other performance - but in the past 5 or so years, absolutely.

munkustrap, it's really subjective, isn't it? IMO, Laura Linney in You Can Count on Me and Gillian Anderson in The House of Mirth gave superior performances over Ellen Bustyrn but I would have definitely nominated Bustyrn for that ballsy performance.

I wasn't being derogatory, I just honestly didn't believe that anyone would say the best of anything has come from that movie. The performances you mentioned are fantastic....Laura Linney is ALWAYS remarkable in whatever she does.

I'm gonna say this AGAIN--Isn't is possible that a black actor's winning or losing has NOTHING to do with politics?? WHY are you belittling white and black and whatever race actors' work? So what if you hated Halle Berry or if you hated Denzel's winning or whatever. How about forming a thought not COMPLETELY biased by your own opinion?? There were a great number of people who thought that Halle and Denzel and Will Smith gave great performances. You've stated your opinion,and that's all good and well, but stop trying to write history to support your opinion: "They only won cuz the Academy is racist and they needed to be politically correct". Bullsh!t! You don't KNOW that.

And Whoopi lost for The Color Purple because Geraldine Page gave one of the greatest screen performances in history.

But aren't all my thoughts going to be biased or informed by my opinions? No?

The Academy has been accused of being racially biased for years and years and it culminated in 2001 with them silencing their critics with a landmark year, awarding their first ever Best Actress award to a black actress and bestowing a black actor with a second career Oscar for the first time ever (Sidney Poitier doesn't count as his second Oscar was an honorary one). So surely I am allowed to think these wins were politically motivated when there were other performances nominated that were more deserving of winnning (though it was a weak year for acting noms, I will admit)? No?
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

She cried when she lost for Titanic. I have that ceremony on tape and have screened that moment for my 16-year-old sister, who laughs hysterically at Winslet's contorted expression.

HAHA Marquise. I'm all about Meet Me in St. Louis. Hopefully I'll stop being so frugal soon so that I can buy it on DVD and repeatedly watch the "impromptu" vaudeville performance that Garland and her little sister put on for their friends...

The Piano is another film that I really enjoyed. Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Anna Paquin and Sam Neill were spectacular in it.

Gillian Anderson's performance in House of Mirth is severely underrated. Remember the scene where she looks a little sick on the grass just because the social atmosphere is so nauseating? Great stuff.

even black actors know that the committee is racist and political. (Eddie Murphy made a speach about it years ago at an Oscar ceremony) That's why they are so surprised when the (very) few win.

"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." I love that out of all the talented black actors and actresses who could have spoken out, it was Eddie Murphy who really did it. Like any of his performances deserved awards.

so, pop, my response to that is that it was political for those critical of the Academy, but not for certain political for the Academy in making its votes. Otherwise, why wouldn't they have given away these awards earlier?

I do not think the Academy is anywhere near as racist as people say--I think Hollywood may be. I think the movie going audience may be. Because in the end, there have not been as many great roles for black actors until recent times. The same problem exists for Latinos and Asian actors. And, the only way I see the Academy as political is that it goes for the high profile performances first and bodies of work.

I kind of agree with you. I pointedly said that the Academy had been accused of racial bias, I didn't say I agreed with those accusations. It's Hollywood and the industry as a whole that has the racial bias, and that's one reason I am so thrilled Sophie Okonedo has been nominated this year. Why? Years ago, Michael Radford was making a movie called B Monkey. Now, the end product turned out to be a barely released disaster, but that's by the by. Anyway, he wanted Ms. Okonedo for the lead role. He took her to meet the film studio backing B Monkey and he was told in no uncertain terms to fire her as they didn't want "a black woman in the lead role".

That sounds like Jamie Foxx's acceptance speech. The whole race issue really irks me - it's ridiculous. No one really makes the Oscars about race until African-American actors win - then they make their whole acceptance speech about being black. They're the first to cry foul for racism, yet they're the first to bring it up.

I really want TONYAFANATIC to respond to what I said a few pages ago...

I sort of agree with munkstrap... I think the Oscars just nominate who they feel were the best of the year. I don't really think it has anything to do with race. Asians are rarely nominated for Oscars, and they don't really make a big deal about it. I know they aren't in as many English movies as African Americans, but I think that whoever deserves to win... will win. People usually deserve to win for talent, not the color of their skin, and I think it applies at the oscars.

and there are MANY more. So why, in 70-something years have only less than 10 black people won an Oscar, compared to all the many white people who were nominated and HAVE won?
