re: Oscar Nominations

I love how people get in such a frenzy over the Oscars. Every year, the same people criticize, bash, and get angry over their choices and swear never to take it seriously again, then the next year, they do the same thing.

I, myself, am included among those people. There are some choices that I do not agree with (Jamie Foxx is very overrated), but I thought overall the Academy did a good job in their nominations. It could have been a lot worse...think Passion of the Christ nominated for Best Director or something.

However, I am angry that Paul Giamatti got snubbed...again!!! He was snubbed last year for American Splendor, then is snubbed this year for Sideways. This nomination was supposed to be a lock for him.

Oh well. Some months ago, I said that if Kate Winslet gets nominated for Best Actress, I'd be happy and would try not to complain considering it was a long shot. I'm extremely excited about Winslet's nomination for Eternal Sunshine for now.

re: Oscar Nominations

Enough already.
FIRST.
Leave Jamie Foxx alone. Stop saying comedian's aren't actors. Many ACTORS have played on both fields successfully. Is everyone on SNL a comedian? Or an actor? You see the point. No, I don't know if Collateral was deserved but it's his frickin year, leave him alone.
SECOND.
Phantom should not have even been considered for Best Picture, let alone best actress. They have enough money already, they'll be fine. I'll go stare at a block of cheese and it will be more interesting than watching Christine "sing" another ALW tune in that big screen debacle.

re: Oscar Nominations

What do you all think about Natalie Portman getting best supporting? Was that a stellar performance or was it just because she took her clothes off? Just curious...
#29

re: Oscar Nominations

I've admired Natalie Portman's public personality for years now, so in spite of thinking that the play is pretentious and the film is not one that I'm especially eager to see yet, I'm happy to see her nominated for whatever she does.

AAH! I cannot believe that HOWARD SHORE was not nominated for Original Score...

That is really stupid, He even won for the Golden Globes, and he deserved a nomination. That is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. Everything was good, except for the SCORE!

re: Oscar Nominations

Omissions:

Kinsey-best picture
Liam Neeson-best actor
Jim Carrey-best actor
Dallas Roberts-best supporting actor
Laura Dern-best supporting actress

The one category that I wouldn't change at all is Best Actress.

re: Oscar Nominations

The fact that Paul G from Sideways was not nominated is an insult.

Jamie was lucky..in a stronger year he would not have been nominated. The Academy likes to "look cool" and doing double nominations is one way. He will win for Ray.

And how Hotel Rawanda was passes over for Ray is absurd.

re: Oscar Nominations

Evelyn, I have to disagree with you about Tarantino. After seeing "Kill Bill" and especially "Jackie Brown", I am convinced that Tarantino does show heart and intelligence in his filmmaking. I hate that word, but it fits in with the whole movie. If he was obviously racist, than why would actors (that he admires) such as Jackson, Grier, and other perform in his films?

"Also, the whole scene where the guys rape the black man and then Bruce Willis comes along to save him by killing the homosexuals (or men engaged homosexuality)?"

No, he was killed those guys because it was the right thing to do. "Pulp" isn't only about violence, but about the ability to save yourself and others.

"It's not exactly a hidden truth. I sat in a room last year with thirty people all saying the exact. same. thing. And we screened and scrutinized clips from the film to support our claims."

I have seen this film many times. I have seen it with many people much older than I am. My parents are against racism, and always have been. So have my grandparents, relatives, and pretty much everyone else that I associate myself with. Most of them have seen this movie, and not one of them didn't appreciate it.

re: Oscar Nominations

"Dallas Roberts-best supporting actor"

In my personal, end-of-the-year picks, I nominated Farrell for Best Supporting Actor. I'm surprised that someone actually remembered that movie.
#35

re: Oscar Nominations

I considered Farrell a leading actor. Dallas, Robin, and Sissy were all supporting to me.

I forgot to mention Paul G. I can't believe both he and Sandra Oh were both snubbed.
#36

re: Oscar Nominations

Farrell was the lead role, but it was still a very small role. Too small for consideration in that category, I think. If anything, it was pretty much the same size as Robert's role.

As for Giamatti, it's terrible that he didn't get nominated. He gave the best performance in that film. And why hasn't Sandra Oh gotten ANY recognition whatsoever?!

PS - Have you read the novel "Home at the End..."? One of my faves.
#37

re: Oscar Nominations

Absolutely! Sandra Oh is just as good and has just as big of a part as Paul, Thomas, and Viginia, and she is constantly left out!

Also, I love the book. Michael Cunningham is so talented. Have you read "Flesh and Blood"?
#38

re: Oscar Nominations

I own "Flesh and Blood", but I never got around to reading it. I read "The Hours", though, and I'm sure you know that it was an amazing novel. It is true that he is very talented.

re: Oscar Nominations

Well..what's the deal with Ray? I mean, after I saw it, all I could think is that the only great thing about it is Foxx's performance. It's nomination for Best Picture to the exclusion of Closer or Hotel Rwanda is beyond me. And all the other noms for Ray..what the hey? I guess the Academy is just Ray-crazy right now.

And the exclusion of Bardem and Giamatti from the best actor race was a disappointment for me as well.

re: Oscar Nominations

Hotel Rwanda and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are both so much better than Ray.

I personally hated Ray.

re: Oscar Nominations

Yes, they are.

Broadway: I adore both the book and film versions of A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD, however, the movie butchered the amazing book and took so many unnecessary shortcuts.

Jamie: What do you mean it's "his year?" I hate when people use that term. It's no one's year, that doesn't make any sense. No one said that because Foxx is usually a comedian he shouldn't be considered, that doesn't make any sense. No one is saying that he didn't deserve his RAY nomination, but his COLLATERAL nominated is truly absurd.

re: Oscar Nominations

I was not really surprised with any of the nominations... except for Clint Eastwood.
The only thing I really truly disagree with is HOWARD SHORE not getting nominated. He won the Golden Globe!! And he is an amazing composer, and he deserved an Oscar nomination. I thought that was just dumb.

And I really really hope that Minnie Driver doesn't sing at the Oscars, that would ruin the night. But I am excited that JOSH GROBAN will possibly be performing. I am seeing him in February on his concert tour!

I am of mixed emotions... .

re: Oscar Nominations

As I mentioned earlier, I am ecstatic about the five nominees for Best Leading Actress. I'm rooting for Imelda Staunton's powerhouse portrayal of Vera Drake, but if any of the five won, I would be happy.

Wouldn't it have been great if Taylor Mead got a Best Supporting Actor nod for "Coffee and Cigarettes"?

I'm glad that "Before Sunset" was recognized with a screenplay nod, but I think that Julie Delpy should have been nominated in the acting category.

re: Oscar Nominations

Ehhh. The Oscars are boring. Just don't interest me (like the Tonys, Golden Globes, Emmys). Not a big movie person.

Boy. There sure are some bitter feelings towards Jamie Foxx around here.

re: Oscar Nominations

ill tell u what the HATERATION on Jaime Foxx is: pure and utter discrimination. Jamie's performance in Ray is INCREDIBLE. Ray Charles had a very strong sense of self and personality. he had one of the most recognizable personas in entertainment. mostly all of u are saying that it was an impersonation, it wasnt. it was an accurate portrayal of a genious musician.
and i doubt that many of u even saw the films Ray or Collateral. U just automatically see Jamie Foxx, that black guy who was a comedian and stuff, how the hell can u give him an oscar nomination? if any of u have any acting experience, you'll know that most of the time, comedians are the best actors out there; Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, etc...
jamie foxx has grown so much in the past two years as an actor that he even surprised me. nobody's arguments are valid.
now jus because i defended his performances which i thought was among the best of the year, i dont believe he should win, i want don cheadle to win. and thats a whole other post.

re: Oscar Nominations

"If he was obviously racist, than why would actors (that he admires) such as Jackson, Grier, and other perform in his films?"

Well before we get into a big discussion about this, let me just say that I respect that you disagree with my views, but I still maintain that my assessment of Tarantino's work is valid.

Both Denzel Washington and Spike Lee have repeatedly accused Tarantino of racism, to which he responded, and I quote: "Go fu[c]k yourself." It's difficult to stop considering the race politics in his films when he is so dismissive of two men who perhaps embody the conflict between representation and the realities of race in America.

With all due respect, claiming that Pulp Fiction isn't racist because you - a non-racist - enjoyed it just doesn't make sense to me. It's possible to see past identity politics in a film when you first view it and then recognize those politics only upon subsequent viewings (or when someone notes aspects of the film worth considering in terms of identity politics). Additionally, it's been a fact for several decades that African-Americans actors and actresses can work in films that many people would agree contain racist subtexts and overtones. Why? Because it pays well. Because they don't agree that the films are racist. Because the final cut doesn't resemble the screenplay or treatment that they agreed to perform. The reasons are manifold.

You shouldn't assume that because a performer partakes in a film, they necessarily agree with its political implications. Even Danny Glover has publicly stated his belief that he has been pigeonholed into undesirable roles. Pam Grier's decision to star in Jackie Brown was, in fact, an effort to present herself in a more "mature" and less "exploitative" light than she did as Foxy Brown. I think Jackie Brown worked in her favor in that respect, but the characters played by Chris Tucker and Samuel L. Jackson still represent stereotypes of African-Americans (why isn't Robert DeNiro's character swearing up a storm in this film too?).

Finally, I hope you don't think it's bizarre that I "introduced" this issue because - in fact - I'm far from the first person to raise it. I once sat in a room with over thirty Caucasians all criticizing the "blatant racism" in Pulp Fiction. Moreover, the subject has been discussed a great deal by the press. Case in point: http://www.tmtm.com/sides/tarant.html

I appreciate your offering some explanation as to why you disagree. It's much more interesting to read than the simple "I couldn't disagree with you more that Pulp Fiction is racist" that I just received via PM. <--To which I can only respond: Okay.

"Jamie: What do you mean it's "his year?" I hate when people use that term. It's no one's year, that doesn't make any sense."

I agree with this. And I agree with the idea of not giving out awards for the "best" of anything in film even more. :) There simply isn't much to gain by comparing work done for vastly different films but bitterness.

re: Oscar Nominations

We need to get a few things straight right now before you continue to post such uninformed drivel around here. We're talking about acting and movies here. Not race. Race has absolutely nothing to do with it - as far as I'm concerned.

Do I think Jamie Foxx is talented? Absolutely. Do I think he was great in RAY? Obviously. Do I think he deserved a nomination and the Golden Globe win? Yes, very much so. Does he deserve to win the most coveted film award for this performance? In my opinion, no. And I assure you, contrary to your belief, it is not because Mr. Foxx has done comedy in the past, and it sure as hell isn't because he's black. The Oscars aren't about race - it's about talent and movies. Race was not even mentioned in this conversation over Foxx until you (I was waiting for someone to say something) pulled out the old, tired, ineffective RACE CARD once again. And don't worry honey, I'm not getting annoyed at you because of your race. It's because of what you say - just incase you might mistake the two reasons.

Just as many of us are saying that Foxx's portrayal as Ray Charles was mostly impersonation, many others OBVIOUSLY disagree, including yourself. Are you the one who decides what is so around here? Are you the one who deems what things are and aren't? Well thank GOD you've finally come along because I have some personal issues I'd like to talk about with you later. Jesus, fanatic you sound ridiculous. "Mostly all of you are saying that it was an impersonation, it wasn't." Wow.

Why would anyone who hasn't seen RAY and/or COLLATERAL comment on whether or not the nominated actor deserves the win or not? I can assure you darling, I saw both RAY and COLLATERAL - RAY twice actually - imagine that!? And I'M WHITE! I'm thrilled for Jamie Foxx and all the future roles and opportunities that his work this year will provide for him in the future - there's no doubt about it - he is a fine actor, and his time will come. I, personally, just don't feel that his work in RAY is superior to that of Johnny Depp, Clint Eastwood, Don Cheadle, and especially Leonardo DiCaprio. And as far as me thinking his nominated for COLLATERAL is undeserved, I stand by what I said. There were other performances that were more powerful in more demanding roles in simply better films. Example: Freddy Highmore for FINDING NEVERLAND, Peter Sarsgaard for KINSEY, Phil Davis for VERA DRAKE, John Lithgow for KINSEY, or even Mark Wahlberg for I HEART HUCKABEES. And once again darling - I assure you - it's not because he's black.

If you're saying that nobody's arguments are valid, you're basically saying that no one's opinion matters in this thread but yours. I'm sorry, but I think it is you who are out of place here - by saying something like that, it makes your point look less and less valid. Sorry if I sound demeaning - I just don't like what you wrote. I assure you again, it's not because I'm white.

No one made this into an issue about race until you came along and declared that people were being discriminatory, and implying that race had something to do with it. You are sadly, sadly mistaken my dear - atleast as far as I'm concerned. You need to really think about what you say before you say it - you sound exactly like a character from SNL making fun of people who always think others are being racist. You're ridiculous. If Jamie Foxx looses his practically secured Oscar, are you going to accuse the Academy of racism? Morgan Freeman and Don Cheadle lost the Golden Globe a few weeks ago - do you think the Hollywood Foreign Press is just racist? According to your logic and the ignorant way you have presented yourself on this board, you probably do think that way.

Define HATERATION, please. I wasn't aware that that was a word....
