I remember a thread on this topic a few seasons ago, and with the nominations two days away, I know many of us are speculating. So I ask, what performances would absolutely thrill you to see remembered on Thursday? What offbeat choices would you love to see thrown in the mix.
Personally, I would be over the moon if Rachel Weisz were nominated for Best Actress (still a possibility, I'd say) and Jennifer Ehle for Best Supporting Actress (probably won't happen, but it would make my day).
Jean-Louis Trintignant in Amour for Best Actor. Field is crowded and Riva looks like the surer nomination as it was not a particularly strong year in the Best Actress category but that film falls apart without that performance.
Denis Lavant for Best Actor in The Holy Motors because it was honestly something I had never seen before.
Jonny Greenwood's score in The Master.
Michael Haneke for Best Director in Amour. Not his greatest work mind you but arguably his most personal and humane film.
Matthew McConaughey as Best Supporting Actor for Magic Mike.
The Rabbi's Cat for Best Animated Feature Film.
Weisz is a possibility still, thankfully. I did love Ehle in ZD30 but her category is stacked.
Beasts of the Southern Wild - Best Picture
My favorite film of the year.
Dennis Lavant - Holy Motors
Agree with strummer; completely original mesmerizing.
Headhunters (Norway) - Best Foreign Film
Outrageous black comedy/thriller. Fantastically paced and deftly written.
Cabin in the Woods - Best Original Screenplay
Wholly original deconstruction of genre that is built on cliches.

Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor for KILLER JOE.
Christopher Walken for Best Supporting Actor for SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS.
Martin McDonagh for Best Screenplay and Best Director for SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS.
I'd like to see Eddie Redmayne get a nom for Les Miserables.
Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor for KILLER JOE.
I couldn't agree more.
Don't you think he'd get for MM over Killer Joe? Let's also add, who he even show up to the awards. The man looks horrible filming a current movie.
Killer Joe is a leading role. Magic Mike is a supporting role (as was his performance in Bernie). He almost certainly won't be nominated for Killer Joe, but he has a good shot for Magic Mike.
To me, his performance in Killer Joe was among the very best of the year.
Totally agree with MM for Killer Joe and Walken for 7 Psychopaths.
Forgot about Walker, but I remember thinking how hilarious he was when I saw it.
Never gonna happen: Ann Dowd. I truly did not see a finer performance this year.
It may Borstal. She got a SAG nomination.
Like last year when Demian Bichir snagged a nom after his SAG showing.
Re: Ann Dowd, I wouldn't be surprised if she was or wasn't nominated. The supporting actress category seems to have four very solid locks (Hathaway, Field, Adams, Hunt) and one slot that could go in several different ways. (BTW--she did not receive a SAG nomination)
Oh, thanks for the correction. It was the NBR she won, which is as far from SAG as you can get. My bad.
Don't worry, I had to look myself to make sure. It seemed like a plausible possibility.
Compliance comes out today on DVD and I can't wait to see it.
Compliance is not for everybody. I actually think I heard the story the film was based on hearing This American Life, IIRC, and I thought that would have prepared me well for the film but Ann Dowd's performance is definitely something. It really borders if not falls into exploitation but honestly what else can be done with such a disturbing story?
McConaughey is the titular Killer Joe so yeah, I consider it a lead even if he was off-screen for a long time- blame the film's stage play roots. Honestly, I wish there was more of him and Juno Temple in the film as they were way more interesting than Emile Hirsch (and Gina Gershon and that drumstick still makes me squirm).
According to a profile of Dowd that I read, she's spent close to $13,000 of her own money (some of it borrowed from friends) sending out screeners of the films to potential voters. This doesn't always work, but has in the past (Diane Ladd in WILD AT HEART is a perfect example). But like you say, Strummer, it's a divisive film that won't sit well with everyone. I'm going to rent it on Amazon tonight when I get home from work.
Also, to your point, in the same interview Dowd said that there have been 70 reported cases of "compliance" incidents in the US. That lends an extra level of creepiness to the story, for sure.
Eddie Redmayne, Best Supporting Actor
Rachel Weisz, Deep Blue Sea (Egregiously overlooked a few times since her win.)

I'd love to see a special Animal Performance Oscar go to the title character in THE TURIN HORSE.
It will never happen but I would like to see Dwight Henry get a supporting actor nomination for BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD.
I'd really love to see Paul Thomas Anderson get a Directing nod for THE MASTER. Granted, he's probably made better films, but this one was ambitious and deserves some recognition. I'm pretty sure he'll get an Original Screenplay nod, though, which may be recognition enough.
Amour, Michael Haneke, Emmanuelle Riva, Jean-Louis Trintignant, and Isabelle Huppert, but I'd be happy if the movie were at least honored with some of these nominations.
Beasts of the Southern Wild, Benh Zeitlin, Dwight Henry, and Quvenzhane Wallis

Oh, I'd like to see Samuel L. Jackson get a nod, too, henrik. Good point. He was terrific.
