Paula Deen Using N-Word and Making Racial Jokes During Deposition

Paula Deen, a celebrity chef/author, skewered and destroyed for apologetically admitting using the "N-word" in the past....

Robert Byrd, (Dead Democrat-WV), late of the Ku Klux Klan, lead one of the longest filibusters in Senate history to stop the Civil Rights Act, used the "n" word on national TV, elected U.S. Senate MAJORITY LEADER by Dems and celebrated for his "leadership."

No one in this thread, except for you, brought up Robert Byrd. He has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation.

That being said, Byrd was born a full thirty years before Paula Deen and obviously was raised in a very different time. Furthermore, it isn't as if Byrd was an unapologetic racist his whole life- as times changed, so did he, and he apologized many times over for holding such repugnant views during his life.

Still, none of that has anything to do with Paula Deen. I'm gonna bet you're one of those white people that is still mad you can't say the N word, right?
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Hands down, the most bizarre post in the history of the OT board. You spent how many days trying to come up with that embarrassingly nonsensical post?

Now you've got me wondering if there are any, even more recent, instances of Republicans making racist statements.

Back on topic-sadly, Deen's ignorance is turning in on her. She does not have the ability to articulate the complexity of race and racism. She's tried to turn this into a smear campaign and cries on TV. She's playing the victim. Wrong move.

"I is what I is"-a rather pathetic response from a international business woman playing the "poor me"card.

If she were able to say, "I used those words, I am sorry, I need to learn about race and oppression" she'd be in a much better place.

Instead she is saying people can vouch for her? Anyone who likes you and never experienced your insensitivity can say you are nice.

You can be a nice, pleasant racist. I think she's a nice woman, just very ignorant and will not address her blindside.

She's done like dinner.

Phyllis-that was the oddest, most uncomfortable thing. Sadly, I don't think she is very smart or diligent and the boys are worried the meal ticket will expire.

She sold Diabetes meds after making people fat, her cookware was unsafe and burst into flames, her foods were recalled several times, she endorsed a meat supplier that abused animals and foreign illegal labor and other mishaps. She lived ignorantly and put her name on anything. Seems karma wanted in.

I feel just awful about how distressed Paula was when she heard the young black workers in her restaurant using that horrible word. She was so distressed and this problem can't be worked on until those young people stop using that word. Doesn't everybody else feel terrible for her over that?

Not at all.

I just agree that African-Americans should also stop using the word when speaking to one another.

I don't go around to my gay friends saying. "Hey, Faggot! What's up?"

That's all I mean about that.

"No one in this thread, except for you, brought up Robert Byrd. He has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation."

I wasn't making a point about Robert Byrd and I wasn't making a point about Paula Deen. I was making a point about the hypocrisy of the left and most of the people posting in this thread. "I'm going to criticize and destroy THAT person for saying something racist, but I am going to defend and excuse THAT person for saying something racist." Your post defending the racism of Robert Byrd made my point even more valid.
Thank you.

That was just the most bizarre handoff of an apology I've ever heard.

She does not accept responsibility for her own actions. She wants to blame everybody else and every other circumstance for her own bigotry.

And most of all, she wants everybody to feel sorry for her sorriness. She is so sorry that she has to feel this sorry. She apologies daily and profusely, crying with no tears, about how sorry she has to feel about this.

What else can she do?

Apparently, nothing.

I think her last statement in that interview was the most telling:

I is who I is and I'm not changing. (paraphrased, possibly) Which basically tells us:

She isn't actually sorry.
She doesn't think anything is wrong with her actions.
She has no intention of changing her views/behaviors.

So sad she had to comfort others, which of course IS odd, as she's the one in need of comfort.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

(oh, and go take a look at Food Networks FB page. Full of "I'm never watching you again." statements.

But, mikey, Paula Deen is a Democrat. And she's being criticized by (I assume you assume) Democrats. Where is the hypocrisy?

I ask, rhetorically, if there are no examples of Republicans making racist comments and you respond with a string of Demorat gaffes. Now, there's hypocrisy.

I don't see that this article has been linked to yet. Very good explanation of how Paula's apologies are a little off from what they could/should've been. Not that I'm for beating a dead host. But I think any discussion that can come out of this is good.
