A few people have said Burstyn over Julia Roberts for BROCKOVICH. I'm in the camp very happy that Julia won. However, that year I would have also been thrilled if Laura Linney had taken it for YOU CAN COUNT ON ME.

Jordan, Julia Roberts gives one of my favorite winning performances, that performance is the definition of a star turn, it not only ignites the screen, it makes the screen explode into pieces. Some choices here are great (and I'm updating my Netflix queue based on some of the ones I haven't seen), but I do think people feel that if you're playing an intense addict in an intense drama you are more deserving of an Oscar than say a comedic performance, or one that treads the line between comedy and drama like Roberts' does. I actually thought Catherine Zeta-Jones gave an incredible performance, no she was not playing a depressed housewife in the 1950s, but she didn't have a single weak frame in the entire moment, it's a powerhouse performance and I couldn't be happier that Zeta-Jones won (and I don't buy the whole "she got caught up in the CHICAGO train" argument).

Javero--thanks for remembering Annette B in 'Being Julia'. That film is on periodic rotation in my house, and I'm always so touched and impressed by her performance.

There was something so crazy about Bening losing out twice to Swank . I guess 'Million Dollar Baby' was a big Academy fave and 'Being Julia' a more idiosyncratic--and flawed--film, but I was really hoping Bening would get some of that "Sorry we screwed you out of the statuette so many times--here's an Oscar" momentum.

I think she's a great and under-appreciated actor.

Barbara Stanwyck only had an honorary Oscar and really should have won for Double Indemnity

Irene Dunne never received any Oscar, competitive or honorary, and should have for The Awful Truth (comedy gold!) or I Remember Mama

Moore deserved both actress and supporting actress that year, even though her Mrs. Brown was not a supporting role.

Her loss to Kidman is a joke. Kidman's role seemed more supporting to me.

If Moore's role in The Hours is a lead, then I'd add to the list:

It was actually, "You were much better than Halle Berry, and we're really sorry you didn't win for Moulin Rouge!, so here's your consolation Oscar."

Nicole was wonderful in The Hours. But it was a supporting role.

There was a whole string of actresses winning awards for movies they made the previous year, instead of for the performance they won for.

Look at Paul Newman, too. His one Academy Award was for The Color of Friggin' Money. Seriously??? All those great screen performances ... and he wins for The Color of Money.

Okay.

That's the way it works, though. It's an opinion that is made up of quality, timing, personal opinion of the actor, the previous work, and the major hype behind the nomination and the film they're nominated for.

Nicole Kidman has given so many Oscar-worthy performances, IMO. I loved THE HOURS so much and thought she was simply stunning in it, but then again, so was everyone in the movie (Streep should have also gotten in, and I couldn't agree more about Toni Collette). To me the image of Kidman struggling to write the first line of what would become MRS. DALLOWAY is reason enough to award her the Oscar.
And I will never get over the fact that Ms. Bening has lost to Hillary Swank twice, sorry but I cannot stand Swank, and it's sad that she's won for arguably the only two decent performances she's ever given. I despised MILLION DOLLAR BABY so that one particularly stings, but it's baffling how Bening's turn in AMERICAN BEAUTY lost.

For me the scene in THE HOURS of Julianne Moore alone in the bathroom, in total emotional meltdown, struggling to keep the pain out of her voice as she speaks to John C. Reilly who is in the bedroom clearly expecting some birthday affection is one of the most powerful moments in all of film acting, and it outclasses everything else that Catherine Zeta-Jones and nine out of ten Oscar-winners will ever be associated with.

In my last semester of High School, best, I did a project rounding up what I called "Career Awards" at the Oscars (Al Pacino for SCENT OF A WOMAN, Paul Newman as well, many more), "Make-Up Awards" (arguably, Kevin Spacey's 1999 Best Actor win rippled for two years, with Russell Crowe's GLADIATOR win a make-up for THE INSIDER and Denzel's TRAINING DAY win a make-up for THE HURRICANE).

And sometimes, the Career Award is fully justified. Like when Gregory Peck won for TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Right role, right actor, right time, perfect Oscar choice.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

Roscoe, that's such a haunting moment. I think one of the scariest line readings I've ever heard is Reilly's "Come to bed, Laura Brown." And you're right, the image of her waiting in the bathroom is great.
SonofRobbie, we all have our irrational dislikes, I for some reason have an irrational dislike of Hillary Swank. Again, I feel like most people think she deserved to win for BOYS DON'T CRY because of the role she plays rather than for her actual performance. No, Bening's character didn't get beaten and raped to death, it doesn't mean she didn't give a masterful performance.

I also skipped a page, so this might've been mentioned already. I'm going to add Christian Bale to the list, from THE MECHANIST. The transformation itself is award worthy.

Also, Bette Davis in A Catered Affair.

Nicole Kidman should have a few Oscars at this point. She has had a string of artistic triumphs that some performers never get the chance to experience once, let alone multiple times. Moulin Rouge is a mess, but her performance is dynamite. She should have won Best Actress in 2002, allowing Zelwegger or Moore to win in 2003.

Poor Annette Bening. She just needs someone to write her a fantastic, scene-stealing supporting role in a film with Oscar pedigree, and she could easily be a slam dunk. And in my opinion, even though no one seems to particularly "like" Hilary Swank, myself included, her two victories were warranted.

I love Hilary Swank and feel she's Oscar worthy in pretty much anything she does. I honestly feel that in 20 years, she'll be thought of as highly as Meryl Streep.
