According to BBC America, the Twelfth Doctor’s costume includes “a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Doc Marten shoes.”
Or, as Capaldi puts it (via press release), “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”

All right, I'd like to ask Broadwayworld's Whovians some advice. I started with the Ninth Doctor right before Christmas and I just got to Matt Smith's regeneration into Peter Capaldi on Sunday. My question is -since at this point in my life I want nothing but Doctor Who and I am not ashamed of that - what do you guys suggest I check out next? I know there are episodes of the classic series across Hulu, Netflix and Amazon. I watched the very very first episode, but no others. Any Doctors from the original series I should check out?
What about books? Has anyone read any of the nine zillion book series out there? This is all so overwhelming.
Oh, and I watched a lot of extra features on YouTube, like River Song's timeline (which I still don't 100% get), Pond Life, and stuff like that. Any other stuff like that I should track down?
Thanks, all!
And Martha was the worst, right?

Tom Baker and Pertwee are my favorite of the classic Docs. Especially watch their adventures with Sarah Jane, the definitive companion (RIP Elisabeth)
You should also watch Eight's movie just so you can join us in our groaning. Warning: Eric Roberts plays The Master
As for extras, I always love just miscellaneous YouTube videos, like David's video diaries and all the fun stuff he has done with Catherine Tate
Book-wise, my favorite is The Stone Rose, because it is very wibbly wobbly. Dead Air is a fantastic audiobook David narrated. Short, too, but a great story about pirate radio and a sound-eating alien.
Have you seen any Torchwood? Sarah Jane Adventures? Apart from the anniversary, David's last episode shoot as The Doctor was a Sarah Jane episode

I was told by several people NOT to watch a Torchwood. Plus I have an aversion to John Barrowman, so I'm not that keen on Captain Jack.
Any specific Baker or Pertwee episodes you suggest? Preferably ones with no Daleks or Cybermen.

Some of Torchwood is really well done, I think. A lot of it is just a bit out there, like the man who created Queer as Folk wanted to throw everything he couldn't do on Doctor Who or Sarah Jane into one show. Torchwood to Russell is AHS to Ryan Murphy. And if you're not a Barrowfan, then... yeah, just avoid it.
I'll have to think some tomorrow on my favorite Baker or Pertwee episodes (no Daleks? Not even with Davros?)

I do have Torchwood on my Netflix queue, but I've just never been able to start it.
I can't even put my finger on what it is about the Daleks. I just find them tiresome, like it's just the same thing over and over - and part of that could very well to do with how fast I blew though the series. I think my favorite foes are the Weeping Angels. They creep the hell out of me. I guess it was last week I watched The Angels Take Manhattan. The way Amy and Rory's story ended just slayed me. I was so emotionally beat I had to take to my bed after.

If you want to just get a taste of a bunch of stories and then pick some from them, then I suggest watching Diamanda Hagan's Brief History of Classic Who. She goes over every season without delving into too much spoilers on them, beyond Regenerations.

Just search "Quick Guide to Classic Who" in her videos and they'll all pop up. She's only up season 9 so far (Pertwee).

Posted: 1/28/14 at 2:37amI loved Torchwood myself--the second season in particular, but it definitely starts off wonky. To be fair, Russell Davies was not headwriter until the third season miniseries, Chris Chibnell (sp? creator of the brilliant Broadchurch) was the headwriter.

Oh, Phyllis. I love how we are so often in sync. I started Doctor Who around the same time.
And yes, Martha IS the worst.

I would highly recommend Torchwood. It's darker and more adult than Who. I agree with kec that you should stop after Children of Earth. Miracle Day is terrible and wish it had never existed.
And I realize this isn't similar to Who at all but I would also recommend watching The Catherine Tate Show because all of her characters are amazing.

Phyllis have you seen this video? It take place after the events of The Angels Take Manhattan (have the tissues close at hand!):

I thought Miracle Day had a few good moments, but the story was too slight for how many episodes (10 I think?) it took, and the mix of American/British never really worked as talented as I thought some of the American writers added to the team, like Whedon cohort Jane Esperson, are.
That said I actually didn't mind Martha in some of her Torchwood appearances, and I thought the way I believe the second season finale (or was it one of the finales of Who?) managed to incorporate Who, Torchwood and Sarah Jane was well done. (For the record, while Sarah Jane Adventures seemed cute, I did find it aimed too young to really keep my interest.)

Kad, are you caught up yet? I was watching this show like it was my job. I was off the week between Christmas and New Years and I almost all I did was watch Doctor Who. It was simply glorious.
kec, I did see P.S. I wish they'd filmed it, but the storyboarded version is heartrending enough.
I wanted to like Martha. I like the actress and I think she's beautiful, but her character sucked so hard. I hated the why she threw herself at the doctor and just never really had any of own agency. Even when she got over the Doctor, I never really understood what drew her and Mickey together. Seriously, what does he see in her?
With the exception of Martha (and Kylie Minogue, who I've largely forgotten), I've loved all the companions in the new series. I'm not sure anyone will ever top Rose for me, but I did love love loved the Ponds as well. I thought I was gonna hate Donna but she grew on me and I thought the end of her story was really poignant. It didn't make me just want to curl up and die like The Angles Take Manhattan did, but it did feel like a punch in the gut. I like Clara. She's got a lot of spunk. But Rose rules all. Followed closely by Amy. But Rose is still my number one. I loved how no matter how dangerous and crazy things were about to get, she'd always get that insane grin on her face when she and the Doctor would rush into whatever shenanigans were next for them.
I swear that episode where Sarah Jane and her son and K-9 and the talking computer guest made me wonder if the Sarah Jane Chronicles took place in the 80s, because everything about it gave such a distinctly 80s vibe. I don't even mean just K-9. Even their house looked 80s! Did it take place in the 80s?
Also, - and maybe this is just me, which is fine, because I understand my tastes are unusual and varied, but - Peter Capaldi is kind of sexy, right?

Sarah Jane was set in the present day, but obviously it was meant to be a throw back to 80s kids sci fi serials. The not particularly inspired Wizards vs Aliens with a similar look and tone and from the same creators replaced it when Elisabeth Sladen sadly passed away.
I do think that Martha suffered from being sorta made into, unsuccessfully, an immediate Rose replacement. They shuffled it up more with later companions. I love Catherine Tate, but I admit I hated her in her Xmas premier episode (which I found pretty poor anyway - but I often think the extra long specials, like Kylie's, try to shove too much in -- they have a sad scene, a funny scene, etc, and the tone tends to be all over the place.) Thankfully, however she grew on me very quickly in the series proper.

Some of the Fifth and Seventh Doctor stories are good. Off the top of my head, I'd highly recommend any of the multi-Doctor stories just for fun, like "The Three Doctors" (10th anniversary special), "The Five Doctors" (another anniversary special), and "The Two Doctors." Not exactly strong stuff in the way of plot, but seeing the different Doctors play off each other is good fun.
Glad to see someone else reads the books, Wynbish! They really are good too, especially the Ninth Doctor stories. Nine is my favorite NuWho Doctor, so the books featuring him are a good alternative to the fact he only got one season. I haven't read too many so far, but I'd recommend "Only Human" (Nine/Rose and cavemen!) and "Forever Autumn" (Ten/Martha and the supernatural) as good starts.

Posted: 1/28/14 at 5:06pmI read Beautiful Chaos, which is a 10- Donna story. Starts and ends after The Doctor took away her memoris of her time in the TARDIS, but the middle is set before that. Pretty good, and it made me cry.

Martha also had no character flaws other than loving too much. She didn't challenge the Doctor at all.
(Yes, Phyllis, I'm caught up).
Rose is my number 1, too. I even grew to love Jackie and Mickey, characters who grated my nerves at first.
Donna is also fantastic.
