A friend at work once told me that Martha was 10's best companion. I literally just shook my head and walked away.

I understand that she was smart and strong and saved his life numerous times and spread his name and all that jazz.

And all of that is overshadowed by the fact that she wanted him to love her so badly, it made her leave.

Her eventual ending up with Mickey really felt like a "pair the spares" pull by Davies.

Slight threadjack, but have y'all seen Matt Smith as Christopher Isherwood in "Christopher And His Kind"?

I just re-watched it, and he's just so...I don't know, yummy. Almost makes me want to start on Who. (I did see the Kylie one, but that was years ago...)

He does put me in mind of Pertwee a bit. Which is a GOOD thing.

Pertwee is and will always be my very favorite Doctor. In the late 80's, I met him and we became friendly enough to correspond. He was a character, could be a bit imperious (and bristled a bit when I told him so - which only proved my point), but, oh, such great F U N!

Yes, it's largely very good, and I admit I was not won over to Smith as Who until after I saw him in Christopher.

On the original subject of this thread, I feel like this costume looks a little too Hogwarts. But maybe that's just me.

Jay, I totally agree with you on that film, and I only find Matt Smith more irresistible playing the Doctor. But, again, maybe that's just me.

I think the reason that Martha is such a bland companion is because all the other companions join the Doctor to search for adventure, whereas she was merely searching for love. It was a bit too conventional for Doctor Who.

Phyllis, I would also recommend the BBC film "An Adventure in Space and Time," which was an interesting look at how the show got its start, starring David Bradley as William Hartnell. And, though slightly less related to the discussion, Catherine Tate/David Tennant production of Much Ado About Nothing that was filmed for Digital Theatre is very fun.
