School should also start later so that it's more aligned with most parents' workdays. If parents don't get out of work until 5, why should their children get out at 2?

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

But then you'd have the problem at the other end of the day: If they stay until FIVE they wouldn't start until 10:30 or 11...and mom & dad had to be at work at 8 or 9. Besides...it's not the school's job to be a babysitter for kids.

My HS (where I teach) starts at 8, ends at 2:30. Still plenty of time for sports and extra curriculars. Our tardy rate is much lower NOW than when we started at 7:30.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Some schools have tried serving breakfast as well a lunch to keep truancy and tardiness down. Seems to work.

I hate using the phone anyway, but I was always taught not to call anyone after 10 p.m. So far I've only had to do that in emergencies or if my ride flaked out or was too drunk to drive.

As for work, we're in San Francisco but have a ton of clients in the NYC/DC area, so voicemails when we get in in the morning are not unusual.

Early morning phone calls are a way of life when you're a substitute teacher. The calls start coming in here at 5 AM. I don't mind it--especially when the high schools start their day at 7:20, but I prefer they come the night before when possible.

Wow Dolly, you sure have strict rules we all need to live by!

If you dont like when someone calls you, dont pick up the gd phone. You can check the message to be sure noone died. When you return the call, let the person know that you dont speak on the phone in the evenings. I've done that and even family doesnt call then.

Things were different when Ma Bell ran things and eveyone fought for the same phone. Still, we talked on the phone after 9 as kids, especially during the summer...so did my mom, for that matter. That's when she had time to catch up with family.

I guess I'm not seeing the point of this thread.

I think the point of this thread is that "courtesy" is something which is fading from out society. People on the train last night were subjected to these kids blabbing on the phone late at night telling their friends who "awesome" and "amazing" the show was. It was late and those kids should have been more considerate of those around them and those on the other end of the connection.

If the people on the other end of the conversation didn't want to hear them "blabbing", as you put it, they'd have either not answered or simply hung up.

But it would have been okay if it was before 9? I agree loud people on their cell phones are annoying, but they're annoying no matter what time it is.

Sure it's generational, but I was raised not to call after 10 (I'm probably a little younger than you), and I didn't, until I grew up and times changed. There are still people I don't call after 10 (mostly much older people) but I very frequently receive or on occasion make calls well after midnight. Depends on the situation.

I also don't care at all which way the toilet paper hangs.

When I was a kid 9 PM was phone cut off, when in college, unless it was a friend who asked me to call late, !0 PM was my cut off. Now it is 11:00 PM. Anything after that, if not a life and death emergency, can wait until morning.

I think it mostly has to do with the cell phones. Back in the day there was one phone that rang in every room. So everyone knew not to call after nine or you would get an angry parent.

..and yeah, they are night owls. My daughter is 19 and her phone starts going off around 10pm with plans for the night. I remember those days.

What if the kids hadn't rung their friends but chose instead to converse with each other about the show they'd just seen? The conversations would still have happened, and would still have been as noisy, with the only discernable difference being one common thread of conversation as opposed to several different snippets. Had that been the case, would we now be reading a complainy thread about "talking on the train after 9pm"?

That's exactly how I read it. If the call recipients didn't want to talk on the phone that late, they wouldn't have answered. It has no impact on anyone's lives but the two people involved. Dollypop is just complaining because he had to listen to them. I feel the same way about loudmouths on their phones on my morning commute, but I wouldn't start a thread complaining about how rude it is to make calls at 8:30am and mourn the downfall of society solely because I was bothered by it today.

No I think the point of the thread was that you were annoyed by something young people were doing because you don't understand the world is a different place than it was 30 years ago, or 20 years ago, or 10 years ago.
