I think it's just a good reminder that it's the same as it ever was, especially since I've heard and read about a million times today how people hope this pople will bring the church into the future.

Madbrian it has much less to do with a catholic country treating its citizens fairly and more to do with its very unstable leader trying to garner favor with the major liberal nations of the world and to win the votes of gays and progressives at home even as she continues to ignore and silence their voices. The woman responsible for the marriage equality bill and gay adoption bill is Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and she has managed to get to the presidency by presenting herself as the modern day Eva Peron, fighting against social injustices and oppression by the upper classes. In reality instead of offering relief and help to farmers in 2007 when they were having trouble selling crops she taxed them heavily to help pay for her over 2,000 piece warbrode! Kirchner likes to present herself as a normal and caring woman while giving speeches declaring that Santa is not real, silencing anyone who dares speak out against her and her government in her countries newspapers, She has also no longer allows many argentines to visit america, did I mention she hates and thinks we killed Chavez? Or that she continues to insist that the Falklands belong to her country and not GB after a massive and unnecessary war and numerous referendums? If she allows gays to get married and adopted she gets more support from the international community and a mostly uninformed american public for her cruel and dictatorial regime that only managed to gain power after stuffing the ballot boxes in the last election. They declared she won over 70% of the vote in Buenos Aires alone when it is known that the city does not support Mrs. Kirchners party and prefers the Pro party. She also has made use of the politics of fear claiming the country will be ruined and destroyed by her opponents and engaging in brutal and fear based tactics to win over voters in rural argentina. But my main point is she also hates the churches as it questions her power and she will do everything she can to hurt it and dilute its power over her people, which the church can use to question her and her policies. Their fight for equal rights is not like the one here and please do not act like it or that Mrs. Kirchner is a true 'friend' of the gays. I'm sorry for interrupting your discussion but I can't stand to hear that terrible terrible woman praised and fawned over.

Why would anyone expect the guy who would be elected Pope would believe gay relationships to be moral, let alone support gay marriage?

Yes but rule under a regime that doesn't give them those rights would be much better and easier than one under MRs. Kirchner. Phyllis would you have supported Chavez if he had offered gays rights? No. Because its silly to vote with only one issue on your mind we make fun of republicans constantly because of it yet we don't recognize it when ourselves we express love for a psuedo dictator like Kirchner. She wants people like you to think about they so you will support her and urge your government to do the same. Saying things like that will only increase Argentinas positive image here even as anti american propaganda spews from Mrs. Krichners mouth and she turns Argentina into Cuba. I have a friend there who lives in fear of this woman and what she will do to her country. This is not something to focus so single mindedly on.

I'm sorry, but the oppression of the Argentine people is a serious issue I prefer not to take lightly and would others would as well. Our actions towards them now could have major repercussions in the future for our country and theirs and those around it.

Yes and let us disregard this mans good works to the poor in Buenose Aires and good work he has done for his churches there and given them hope and strength to face one of the worst periods in their history. Especially when the move for gay rights at least in the political world is more about who the gays will vote for than it is about any kind of equal rights.

A person is not to be judged on just one action or a handful of quotes. It is not our place to judge anyone, that's what the bible is really about and most people even catholics believe this. The great majority do not follow the oppressive doctrine of the church. It's truly sad to all those catholics mocked and have views forced upon them by parties that do not know them no matter from who they come from.

So we shouldn't have the right to judge someone who judges us because judging people is wrong?

I apologize for the comments about how you write and I apologize for inadvertently making fun of your disability.

But while you say you're defending the damning of gay people, you told us not to judge him because he holds those beliefs. I don't look to the bible as to how to live my life, so comments about not judging are silly, because it's the bible that says not to judge.
