. . . .
Well, DG, I wrote that as much for myself as for anyone else. I think we all strive to validate what is artistically strong. But in the end, even THAT is completely subjective. There will ALWAYS be conditions in all of our minds. Which allows me to put anything like this into perspective. The only thing these awards are good for is pr. And even THEN, it still doesn't always work. I mean...how many times do I have to go around calling myself 'Five-Time Award Winner Rob Maitner'? And I still can't get a callback for Young Frankenstein.
Oh...and I totally get the child-hating thing.
I'm not sure that anything they pointed out here would be considered an "upset."
UPSETS would be "The Queen" for Best Picture, or Ryan Gosling for Best Actor.
Or Marky Mark for Supporting Actor, etc.
For most of the examples listed, they have merely pointed out "strong seconds" or even close calls.
Not upsets.
An "upset" would be like Marica Gay Harden for Pollack (well-deserved but not on anyone's lists) or Adrian Brody in The Pianist with Roman Polanski winning the Best Director. Three people predicted that on the entire planet. THAT's the definition of an upset.
I really donr give a rats ass who wins, but i wanted to say, in deference to the 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back: If Eddie Murphy loses, "Norbit" is to blame.

I'm one of the three that predicted the Harden win! But I somehow still managed to lose that Oscar pool!

Although I haven't seen all the other performances. I do agree that realeasing 'Norbit' around Oscar time couldn't have helped him out at all. Some who may have voted for him, might be second guessing after being reminded of his usual output.
I think that's so stupid that it would even be considered. He is nominated for his acting in "Dreamgirls" not Norbit . . . so, it should not even come in to play. It's like if an actor/actress was nominated for a movie and I didn't vote for them because their last movie was a bomb. It makes no sense and it should not even be considered.
Nobody's paying any attention to Eddie Murphy's acting in Norbit.
They're paying attention to his $30 million opening weekend.
And robbiej--I wanted Harden to win, and thought she clearly gave the best performance in her category that year... but I never predicted it, and she was either 4th or 5th on all the visible prediction lists. Same thing with Coburn (his year) for Supporting Actor. Everyone was supposed to be watching Nick Nolte for his potential Leading Actor nomination in "Affliction"... and I kept saying, "Yes, but is anybody watching James Coburn here??? He's incredible." He snuck in the top five as a supporting nominee, and then won the award... much to everyone's surprise (including me).
Those were "upsets."
Adriana Barraza would be an upset this year... Paul Greengrass for Best Director would be an upset this year...
Not the people on their list.
spider ur right...but thats how the world should be, not how it is unfortunately. im looking forward to the awards on sunday. im glad and proud of jennifer hudson and the rest of the DREAMGIRLS camp on their success and nominations. They have achieved so much and I just want them to enjoy it and have some fun. I don even care who wins anymore after realizing what an incredible year this has been and the accomplishments of all the films and their casts is just remarkable. you never know what happens, especially this academy. they give it to who they want to give it to
I hadn't even seen Harden in POLLACK. But the week before the Oscars, right when I was filling out the pool ballot, and I looked at Hudson's name, I thought, "I don't know why, but I think it's going to be Harden." So maybe it wasn't so much a prediction as it was a hunch. I was just thrilled she won and totally thought I was going to win the pool.

I think Jackie Earle Haley deserves the win for that incredible portrayal of a pedophile in "Little Children." He is astounding in that role.

Tom O'Neil loves to hedge his bets--I wish he would edit his books with that much zeal--they're riddled with errors.
I would love to see Jennifer Hudson lose simply to witness the Hindenburg-like hysteria that would overtake these boards for weeks on end. The "I'm going to boycott the Academy Awards...", the "her career is over" declamations....
Oh it would just be like a lob of hardened feces chucked into a beehive!
I loved Departed, but I would cheer if LMS took it. I woud be very upset if Eastwood or DiCaprio won over the frontrunners. Meanwhile, it would THRILL me if Arkin and/or Breslin won.
If Arkin wins, I will be pissed.
That Melissa Etheridge song WILL win - I've been saying that for months.
Although Ms. Breslin's performance was great, it was blown off the map by both Jennifer Hudson's performance and Adriana Barraza in Babel, in my opinion.
I think it's interesting that many people think The Departed will take best picture. I just watched The Departed and Babel a few days ago and though The Departed was good, Babel was a lot more dynamic.
This year I've seen 4 out of the 5 best pictures and all were great! I would be happy with any taking the Oscars this year. Unlike other years where I'd be rooting for 1 picture. As long as Eastwood doesn't win again I'll be happy.
I am so glad that someone finally has said that Forest is really a supporting performance NOT a lead performance.
I wonder how this happened? Agent? A deal?
McAvoy was the lead perf and was just as good as Forest. He is in a silly brit chick flick this weekend.
Alan Arkin is an underrated actor and I would love for him to win over the overrated Eddie Murphy.
If Jennifer wins she will wind up in the same leaky boat as Mira Sorvino.
I think everyone in the Supporting Actress category is stronger than Hudson.
Alan Arkin's best perf is in THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER, not on DVD sad to say. This is likely his last chance as is Peter O'Toole.
I think Helen and Forrest are the acting locks; Eddie was a lock before NORBIT. If the Academy is getting sick and tired of DREAMGIRLS hype then Eddie and Jennifer may both lose to Alan and Abigail.
The real question mark is Best Picture.

but I seriously doubt Leo has a shot-- which is a shame he has always been a fine actor.
Next year Leo will get it.
Quite cruel but...
If that little brat wins over Hudson, The Academy should be ashamed of itself. It's bad enough they didn't nominate Bill Condon or Dreamgirls. The only performer I can think of that should beat Hudson is Catherine O'Hara. Of course, she wasn't nominated.
Eddie Murphy gives a great performance! Why should the offensive, awful Norbit matter? Arkin wasn't half as good as Murphy.
(I guess I didn't like Little Miss Sunshine.)

Anybody but Hudson. Great voice but she can' t act!
Catherine O'Hara should have been nominated, and I would actually be happy if she would have won. She was brilliant!
