OK JB, This is exactly what I mean: "I really like SITR, but I believe it to be the most overrated film of all time." You really like it....BUT....Other people like it TOO much? What difference does that make? I can understand when people go on about Films that should have won an oscar, or movies that are popular that they can't stand-- but if you "Really Like" a movie how can you think it's the "Most overrated film of all time"?
I think I get what you're saying JoeKv, but I do think that sometimes people or critics in general give a movie credit for being better made, or deeper, or more socially significant than it is. There are specific arguments that could be made about this being true of certain films.
I'm suprised that Lost in Translation isn't on the list. Not because I necessarily think it should be, but because it seems like one that would be.
I "get" what they're doing, but I've still changed my avatar in protest.
I hate the word "overrated", but I do agree with one of the movies on that list (Mystic River).
I agree with Forrest Gump but im not sure if it is overrated or its just that the film is overplayed soo much that I cant stand it.
miss p & best12bars: I immediately thought of you two when I saw the list. My deepest condolences.
Thank you, SM2. I appreciate your support in this time of woe.
I totally agree with American Beauty.
Most of them I have seen
I agree with about 6 choices

Wow Miss P I never knew Jules et Jim was your favorite movie! It's only my sixth-favorite movie. It's so overrated.
Very disappointed here! American Beauty is one of my favorite movies, but I can see how others don't like it. But the WIZARD OF OZ??? Come on - how damn cynical do you have to be to call The Wizard of Oz overrated???
Citizen Kane - now THERE'S an overrated movie!
Joe, those other 5 movies better be damned good, that's all I have to say!!!!

Only a philistine would consider Jules and Jim or Nashville overrated.
It's not so much that I care if someone doesn't like the movies that I do... each of us is entitled to an opinion... and several of you have said this already... but "overrated" is not a criticism of any film itself... it's a criticism of the many people who love it. Their staff is saying we shouldn't love it so much. They are criticizing our collective appreciation of a certain film.
My response is simply to not buy or read their magazine so much... as I raise a strong middle finger in their general direction. It's not their staff's job or their place to tell me that my opinion (along with many others) of a certain film is wrong.
I think that's a fair enough criticism of THEIR criticism.
I don't think they're saying that the movies listed are necessarily bad/awful, just that they're overhyped and not nearly as great as certain people seem to think. Two of my favorites made it on that list (GONE WITH THE WIND, THE WIZARD OF OZ), but I'm not going to boycott Premiere because of it. After all, taste is relative.
kjklo: That's their opinion and they're entitled to that, as are you. It doesn't make anyone a philistine... perhaps only in the eyes of a film snob.
best12bars: Did you click on the link? Along with the listed title, they include opposing viewpoints (those praising/those criticizing), so it's not just a one-sided argument.

No. Other people don't like it too much. I have no issue with how much someone likes any film. It's the endless lists and "film scholars", who keep telling us that it is the "greatest musical ever made". I like it. I think it's very entertaining; but, I feel it is far from the greatest film musical, ever. In that regard, to me, it is overrated. That's what overrated means.
SM2---Yes, I clicked on the link and read the article... that's how I listed out the films for everyone early in this thread...
...and NO, I don't like this article or Premiere Mag's approach to "overrated" films.

For cusiousity sake, I googled "Greatest Musical Ever" and yes, SITR popped up a few times, but so did Fiddler, Rent, Les Mis, Gypsy, Chorus Line, Oliver...those were just page one. So, are all those Musicals overrated too? Or is one of those actually the Greatest Musical Ever?
I'd have to say that I'm in the Singing in the Rain camp myself...certainly as the greatest FILM original musical!

OY! I posted that very same thing about the two sided arguement hours and hours ago.

If you actually read the article, the list came about as a result of discussions between co-workers at the magazine. Each of the films listed has a "rebuttal" from another co-worker at the magazine which praises the listed films. It's no different than this website. People here say something like they hate "OMIGOD You Guys" and others post their rebuttals. So, relax. The magazine is not saying these are overrated films. It's just a "discussion".
Sorry, jimnysf, but it bears repeating, apparently.

I know. I think some of the posters are so anxious to post their comments that they don't bother reading the actual article.
And it bears repeating that I don't like their approach.
Get over it!
I don't need some stupid, arrogant "assistant to the copy editor" staff member telling me my opinion of a film is wrong. Even if it's rebutted by an equally inconsequential staff member.
What's so hard to grasp here? I don't like the article or Premiere for publishing it.
BUT I READ IT.
If they wanted to publish two different staff member's opinions of films, THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT.
They didn't. They published someone saying it was OVERRATED... meaning "I'm wrong about my opinion for liking it."
GOT IT?

If you want to destroy a friendship, ask your friend to make a list of all-time overrated movies. He or she is bound to choose some of your favorites, and you'll get into a pointless, unresolvable argument and end up attacking each other's tastes, values, and outlooks on life. "How can you be so dead inside that you don't weep at the end of (fill in movie.)"
I think this thread rather proves that theory. Personally, I agree with FORREST GUMP, CHARIOTS OF FIRE, FIELD OF DREAMS, and (especially) MYSTIC RIVER. I don't understand how so many people fell for that humorless piece of contrived professional nihilism. If you liked it, oh well...
Amen, roquat.
At least you "got" the spin of this article.
So many here are not.
