Prop 8 & DOMA Decisions Will Be Handed Down Today — Page 3

I was on the Ed Markey campaign and I am more nervous about today than I was yesterday waiting for the results of the election to come in.

I'm curious ... with emotions running so high on this issue, do any of you predict riots, depending on the outcome?

Hate to say it, but I was in L.A. during the Rodney King trial, and right when the jury handed down the verdict (I watched it live), I knew they were coming. I actually called a friend and said, "Get home, now. This isn't going to be good." That was before anything had happened or been reported yet.

Not psychic, just intuitive.

I hope things don't get ugly today.

I agree we can't turn back the clock. Even if there is a setback today, progress will be made. New cases will be filed, new injustices will be fought for, more states will legalize same-sex marriage ... it is inevitable. Regardless of what happens today.

I don't expect much reaction about this decision after 3 weeks. If it goes our way sure there will be some rogue nuts occasionally being asses. American's have been really lazy about civil rights for a few decades now..

There will be endless explanations of what it means. There are 30 states with constitutional amendments forbidding gay marriage. Those will be allowed to stand, because of states' rights, but those states MIGHT be forced to honor same-sex marriages from other states.

It means 50 years from now, gay marriage will be legal in 50 states...or possibly sooner.

It means you should celebrate a broad ruling on the side of equal protection and justice.

It means bad guys don't always win.

It means the federal government can't keep you from getting married, even if your home state still can.

From SCOTUSBlog: "Dissent in DOMA says the Prop 8 ruling will be no standing."

And Scalia is currently reading his (long) opinion from the bench, so it's going to be a little while before we get the actual Prop 8 opinion.
