In other words, make deeply irrational people think rationally. And we wonder why it's a challenge!

So, which is more likely to happen?
1. Get the USA to change all marriages to civil unions.
2. Get the USA to grant equal civil marriage rights.
Because it MUST be the same word. Separate is never equal.
And to think. All this over a ****ing WORD.

I think the same should be done with Christmas. The secular/American holiday should be called Presents Day so that Christians can retain the true meaning of that word and holiday.
And, we wouldn't be having this problem today if the country had just changed the word during the interracial marriage fight. Think of all the people whose religious beliefs were assaulted by letting people of mixed races marry.

Again, how do you get irrational people to apply rational thinking?
I'm not being defeatist. I'm legitimately asking.
And BLGT? When did the bis get top billing, dammit?!

The problem with Civil Unions is that it's basically like the "white only" water fountain, and it's forcing everyone who isn't white to drink from the "colored" water fountain. It's segregation and discrimination, and Civil Unions are not reconized by most work places or insurance agencies. They also do not give you the same benefits as a marriage license, ranging from property rights to adoption rights.
Lawsuits are coming. I'm hoping it will be overturned by the courts. Marriage, in a literaly sense, has nothing to do with religion and has more to do with legal rights granted by the government.
Hopefully Obama will speak up on this and repeal the DOMA which takes away FEDERAL marriage rights for those homosexuals in MASS and CONN who are currently married.
Gays should not stand for discrimination or segregation. Full Equality for everyone.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but what would happen to the marraige of those who are already married?
For example, my husband and I were married by a judge because my anullment from my first marraige hadn't come through yet. So does that mean we aren't married anymore?

Posted: 11/5/08 at 2:16pmAccording to the laws, those homosexuals who are currently married will stay married until there is a suit brought against the courts to end their marriage. YES on 8 is going to file suit against the courts to end ALL gay marriages in the coming days.

From the NO on 8 Committee:
===
Roughly 400,000 votes separate yes from no on Prop 8 – out of 10 million votes tallied.
Based on turnout estimates reported yesterday, we expect that there are more than 3 million and possibly as many as 4 million absentee and provisional ballots yet to be counted.
Given that fundamental rights are at stake, we must wait to hear from the Secretary of State tomorrow how many votes are yet to be counted as well as where they are from.
It is clearly a very close election and we monitored the results all evening and this morning.
As of this point, the election is too close to call.
Because Prop 8 involves the sensitive matter of individual rights, we believe it is important to wait until we receive further information about the outcome.

Posted: 11/5/08 at 2:59pmI'm all for gay rights, but it's stupid to call proponents of Prop 8 "hateful". Many of them have said they don't have any problem with gay people, they just want to define marraige as between a man and a woman. It's not about what God told them to do, it's not about their prejudice, it just comes down to tradition and what they're used to. You're not going to change their minds on that.

It's bigotry. No matter what justification. And, no, the Bible and tradition don't make it less so.
People used the Bible and tradition to fight interracial marriage. Do you really think those people felt any less justified to defend their beliefs of tradition and religion and the sanctity of marriage??
"it would result in “a degraded and ignoble population incapable of moral and intellectual development.” "
“The next step will be (the demand for) a law allowing them, without restraint, to … have free and unrestrained social intercourse with your unmarried sons and daughters,”
"A ban on this type of marriage is not discriminatory, reasoned a Republican congressman from Illinois, because it “applies equally to men and women.” "
All quotes about interracial marriage
Of course, race and sexual orientation are different. But when you boil it down, it's essentially the same **** different era.

But it's not a religious battle.
There are numerous examples that can be used to point out how religious people have evolved their behaviour and to show how they pick and choose their morality, behaviour and rules from the bible. For example you can still be married and divorced despite the fact this directly contravenes the Bible.
It's a battle with religious people against discrimination and hate.

Well said, Sister G.
It's stupid to deny the bigotry involved in voting for certain Americans to possess rights that other Americans do not.

It's not stupid. It's accurate. Just because they don't think they're hateful doesn't mean that's the reality.
