These same kinds of people tried to keep black and whites from marrying. And they did it in the name of religion. It was against God. If he wanted people of differnt races to get married he would have never created different races in the first place and then seperate them. They also claimed it would be bad for schools and children, kids would learn about blacks marrying whites, and half-raced monster children would be produced and then be made fun of and not know what race they should be.
Pretty sad if you ask me. And those who say that people who voted YES on 8 are not bigots...sorry, bigotry is bigotry regardless of where it comes from.

Fromage, you are going to have to face the fact that not everyone will think your idea is so amazing or plausible.
Fight a battle of semantics to allow new marriages or have the US and every state replace every single marriage document with a civil union version.

Posted: 11/5/08 at 4:58pmGiving gays civil marriage takes nothing away from any church. Your stance is that the word should be changed entirely to please those who have suddenly decided the word is only religious (despite the number of atheists who get married).

People also get married by Justices of the Peace. Or freaking Elvis.
I'm saying that people go to a court house and get a civil marriage document. Then they have a wedding performed either religious or secular.
And as someone fighting for gay Christians, I see the religious side for both gay/gay friendly and non.

I have one - maybe it's rhetorical, but I've always wanted to put it out there - why do some cities, states, etc, let heterosexual couples register as domestic partners? And why do some couples do it? Why don't they just get married?

It's a good question, prs.
I always thought it was because dps were easier to get out of than marriage and less penalties. Dunno if that is true.
It could be psychological. How many times do we see or hear the actual getting married changing the relationship. It shouldn't change the relationship dynamic or sexlife etc but for many it seems to.
I understand that people place weight on words. But that doesn't mean it's rational or holds up legally.
These are worthy questions to explore.

Steve and I do not want to get married....but we totally supported Prop 8. And we feel we, and not a state or federal goverment should decide if we can or cannot get married.
There are many reasons for us not to get married, and frankly it's no one elses business. The fact is we choose not to. And everyone should be able to decide for themselves and NOT have to decide because of a state and federal mandate.
Prop 8 passing is illegal, and goes against the California and US Constitutions as it writes discrimination into law.

From John Duran:
Prop 8 protest rally tonight at 7 pm on San Vicente Blvd between West Hollywood Park and the Pacific Design Center (647 N. San Vicente Blvd. West Hollywood CA 90069) as we move forward towards restoring equality for all in California.
I'll be there!

Had to post F. Geoff Farrow's blog about Prop 8 - hardly a consolation, but some good words there.

On one of the voter breakdowns last night, they said that the majority of African American and Hispanic voters voted in favor of it b/c they are "highly" religious.
truly sad. i guess it really is okay for someone else to be put in the back of the bus... as long as it's not you.

Posted: 11/5/08 at 7:11pmIn California straight couples age 65 and above can get a domestic partnership. The reason they do this and not marriage is because they often times will lose certain benefits if they get married. I knew a lady and her long time love who when they turned 65 they got a domestic partnership so she could continue to recieve some kind of supplimental income/pension from her late husband that she would not get if she got officially married.

Ok.. here is a CA radio program that details the whole prop 8 ... what happens now... thing.
There is still some hope.. but it will be a HARD fight ahead... we WILL need some luck on our side.

After losing at the polls, gay-rights advocates have already begun filing legal challenges to Prop 8, which will amend the state constitution to eliminate the rights of gay couples in California to marry. Lawyers for same-sex couples argue that Prop 8 revises the state Constitution by denying gay individuals who wish the marry the fundamental rights afforded by equal-protection guarantees. What are the constitutional issues? And what will happen to pre-existing marriages between same-sex couples?

Posted: 11/5/08 at 8:02pmI've always felt that marriage was a religious event, not a civil one. I think they should do away with marriage as a civil event. Anyone who wants to legally be with someone, man or woman, should have a civil ceremony, not called marriage. If those same people want a marriage, they can do that at their place of worship. That way, this whole ridiculousness about what constitutes a marriage, wouldn't even be on a voting ballot.

"I've always felt that marriage was a religious event, not a civil one."
yes, the churches have done a fine job of indoctrinating all to that way of thinking...which is exactly why it passed

Posted: 11/5/08 at 9:38pmI'm so disappointed by this. But I heard tonight that there are already 3 lawsuits challenging it. At least people are fighting back.
